18 and over

Just saw the video and song '18 and Over".I have never heard this before but I found the lyrics to be immature for a man in his early thirties to the point that i felt embarassed .Any one else feel this way?

No. That song was just P, fooling around, it was a bootleg and was never meant to be distributed. He did that for his fans. I love that song. 18 and over, I wants to bone ya. Clever and sexy song. Let me find it right now!

Eye wanna make Love to U,
2 times maybe 3,
If u want to go 4 or 5,
Baby that's alright with me,
eye will be your little baby,
eye can be your big strong man....

I think if 17 and under was legal, it would have been a consideration

Prince was past his mid 30's when he wrote those lyrics.

And... no.

Those lyrics are quite feminist for one thing.

Maybe you should turn to other artists if lyrics such as those embarrass you, Prince's work is full of those.

P has always had suggestive lyrics. Ex: Darling Nikki. So, why are ppl making an issue of this? are yall new fans? I'm from an era where there was not much political correctedness and BS. What happened to artistic freedom? Some ppl are too sensitive and take things too personally/literally. Get over yourself.

It is a bit of a different experience listening to it now after the passage of some time, but I still like the tune. Prince liked to push the envelope, he liked to raise eyebrows, he was fierce and fearless which is part of why I loved him in the first place!
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

And if u like that then u can come back

And if u don't smack and I'm out

That's basically empowering the woman he's courting to be able to tell a man that he's not sexually satisfying them, and volunteering to back off in case that happens. That's not your typical rap lyric.

I can't see this as feminist. I agree with 80tomato that it's a bit immature. But damn, I'll always remember being in Paradiso, Amsterdam in 1995 and he opened with this! It was fantastic live.

Well if you see it in the context of

- a world where men tend to forbid women to put their sexual performances in question

- a world where women's right to sexual pleasure was basically denied to them until the sexual revolution and feminist wave of the 1960's (and that's only in the Western world)

- the context of that song's genre, i.e. a very macho hip-hop discourse where "bitches" don't really have a say and are often portrayed as passive objects of desire

I find that particular line pretty feminist. As a young, 18 year old teenager when I first heard that song back in 94 or 95, I remember finding it (and other lines in other Prince songs) pretty enlightening in terms of how I should treat women, particularly in a bed.

.

This aside, what is it exactly that you guys find immature in it?

^ That's one way of looking at it. To me, it always appeared he is just bragging about what a great "bone ranger" he is and wants to bang any girl over the age of 18. And from a man in his 30s who has written some of the best love songs, I expect a bit more depth. But, like I said, I can still enjoy the music and you gave it a whole new perspective!

He's not speaking to a single woman, one with needs wants and desires, he's speaking to women in general, hence the herd of women grouped together saying nothing, just looking sexy and dressed to please. He's saying "you like it, fine, come on back, I'm perpetually hard and I'll fuck you good again. If you don't like it, fine, move on cause there's another of your herd I'll use to jack off". It's typical of the juvenile male rap world.

I feel ya but it was originally just supposed to be a maxi single remix, some fun stuff for summer swimming pool parties: nothing ethereal.

Just a bit of fun - an cheeky spin-off from the original composition Come. I like when Prince plays it light, "Scarlett Pussy", "Freaks On This Side" - playfull funk.

-- So when people are in their 30s they stop partying? The song fits the times and it was a throw away track put on the Crystal set as it is the sister song to Come.

Thought some of the lyrics were rather clever. Being an older female fan (since his beginnings) I like the song and the video and do/did not find it offensive or immature. If anything, sounded like he was willing to please in that arena. Mayte was in prime form as well.

, the early 90"s is when I left Prince partly because I was not feeling the Get Off performance with the cut out yellow trousers and mostly because Iwas busy starting a family etc Now as I visit this era I must say I enjoy a lot of his music, great dance music.I agree with Data that Prince's music does "instruct " men to the importance of pleasing their partner

Starting in your early 30's, don't talk about sex unless it is in a mature and formal manner, even if you're an artist that's had a reputation his whole career up to that point of being sexual...gotcha.

Dammit Beyonce, can't you talk about women's backsides in a more mature and professional manner?! Offended ears have to listen to this stuff, too, ya know!

I love it! People take things way too seriously sometimes and it's stupid. I agree with everyone who says he was just having fun. The man was a genius and we all know that, so he had a little fun with a silly song- so what?
