Wow it's been a while since I've watched that performance. Funny too as I just pulled out my DVD copy of this video just yesterday. This version always got some and I agree with someone else who said it's another studio version he laid down and then filmed and used in the video collection. Plus that ending...P was music
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

That's from The Diamonds and Pearls Video Collection VHS/DVD. I have always thought this version was highly superior to the album version. I love seeing the filming crew in the video dancing in the background.

This. Vocals, guitar, everything.
I love the record version, but this, man...

Who's playing the horns? The Hornheads?

I love Tony M.

Don't get the hate.

Whenever a so-called "real" rapper made an appearance, it sounded odd.
Emancipation, New Power Soul, Chaos & Disorder... Just odd.
Like a rapper doing his/her thing over Prince's music.

But Tony, he blends in. At least give him that.
He's got a beautiful tone, and he's more melodic,
he approaches rap as a musician.

Now if by "rap" you feel like excluding everyone who does not sound like he wants to fuck the system,
OK, Tony's out. But so are a lot of "rap" acts.
I would add, if we really have to get socio-political, that Tony, like Prince, never left his Twin Cities, was there from early on, like a ghost moving in the shadows DRESSED AS A COP, which at the core of Reaganista, is quite the feat. And he never sold his ass, so yeah, fuck you L.A.
In Minnesota they have manure. Real Marlboro Men.

P.S.: "Call The Law", what a great B-side. It starts a bit weak, but then it grows, and it kicks ass. Funny too: "It's profitable!".

I've always wondered if the vid is playback on an existing recording or a live take video AND audio altogether.

the audio was not recorded live with this video.

MrMoops, were you involved in this apocalyptical godsend inc...erformance?

You gave him fire. On SNL's Fury levels (the overcompressed from "Road To 3121" is the one).
I have the uttermost respect for your craft, Sir.
I'm sure a fair deal of Orgers also do.
Same lead as Tower of Power, the Memphis Horns, [your unsung heroes horns section goes here]
Please pass the message to your peers.

There's a "So Dark" live version, pretty recent, it's exactly as with "Willing and Able",
it's better than the record version.
Little do you realize the quality of Prince's songs until they're arranged for acoustic instruments.
It relies entirely on the Hornheadz (I love it with a z) and their love for Prince's craftsmanship.

Thanks!. It was a hell of a ride. My unsung hero horn sections would be Earth Wind and Fire, and Seawind (Jerry Hey) Horns, although I can list many other influences. The last track I worked on for P was an EW&F horn and string treatment on "If I Could Get You're Attention" in January of 2016.

Also, to give proper credit, the horn section in the Jimmy Kimmel performance you linked was the latest incarnation of the NPG Horns, not the Hornheadz. I suspect Phil Lassiter had his hand in the arranging on that. After our 10 year stretch in the '90s, we started working with P again in 2011. We did a lot of recording, but when we were asked to tour, it just wasn't feasible for us, so he brought in another batch of horn guys to tear it up with him on those live shows.

Cool info, thanks Michael.

I love the Hornheadz contributions - It's About That Walk probably pick of the bunch for me

This is absolutely incredible. Among his many lesser-praised talents, when he was 'willing and able' to do so P was beyond brilliant at creating a positive, communal atmosphere. This is case and point. I'm not a particularly religious person, but this makes you believe in something!
