I think it would require state of the art computers and software, but even then, that's how he was ok releasing the stuff.

Let's remember that in the old days, there were pros in all facets of what the technology could do at the time who worked and ran the studios. The biggest artists sought the best of the best. Including session studio musicians second to none.

Prince more or less did everything himself and hired whomever.
By the 80's, production had changed, just as its changing still. Maybe how the music sounded is the charm of it? And how he personally wanted it to sound?

It's a difficult question. We know Prince purposely used unorthodox recording and mixing methods, it's well documented as Susan Rogers as well as others have attested to.

Remember a ways back when there as a massive restoration of The Sistine Chapel, and the paintings by Michelangelo were cleaned up and "restored"?
A lot of people didn't like the results, or thought that it went too far as they looked far different than what we had been accustomed to.
We could guess what It looked like, and what Michelangelo thought and wanted it to look like, but it did raise questions as to what is what, and how far is to far. Much less what is good to you bs good to Prince or anyone else.

But back to Prince, definitely not the best recordings ever released ..technically speaking.

Impossible to do anything with "Dirty Mind".

Remastering is such a scam for the most part, anyway. I know a very big reissue label who uses someone who learnt to master from looking at internet tutorials over 2 weeks.

Like anything, it could be done well or done shitty. Look for the work of Bill Inglot or Vic Anesini to hear how great rematered music can sound

Respectfully, I disagree - if the source material is poorly recorded, there is nothing that can be done. Vic did a very good job on Sly's "There's A Riot Going On" and Bill on various Rundgren albums like "A Wizard, A True Star" but, as great as those two albums are, they will never be of audiophile quality owing to the manner in which they were engineered.

And that's completely fine with me. I prefer music that's a little rough around the edges, anyway.

I actually agree...in the case of something like "Riot", thanks to Anesini, this is the BEST it has ever sounded. That's what I hope with Prince...not to make him sound "different", but the best it can be

well, however poorly Purple Rain might have been recorded at the time,
it still sounds best of all his 80s albums on my system with or without a
good pair of headphones.

given the chance to choose only one album to have remastered, i would
never have come up with Purple Rain because it sounds best of all and
not just because the volume is a bit louder, but because there is such a
depth and so much space in that recording. it sounds great, to me.

so it'll be interesting to see what a remastered version will sound like hmmm

i'd say SOTT first. after PR it's probably viewed as a masterpiece by most and yet it has
the worst sounding cd release of all his albums.

Parade, i could wait for a remaster to be honest. eventhough it's my favorite prince album.
it just exists in it's own time and space for me, beyond the laws of audio lol

to somehow have that improve in sound (even beyond the 24bit vinyl rip flac files) would
simply blow my mind. i'm not sure what i'd do with myself. so let's just have a few others
rematered first lol

I always thought Parade was an audiophile quality album personally! Everything is so lush and clear sounding, especially the medley at the start of the record.

Put "Mountains" on a mix and you might think otherwise. Sounds muddled and distant compared to everything else.

Why are some people so certain there is an extended version of "17 Days"?? I've heard a fan-made version of one but I've never heard of an official extended version of it. I'd be delighted if one was existing and was released but some people here just seems so certain that it exists.

I'm definately not sure. I've heard talk of it in different forums. I'm just being hopeful if there is one, we'll get it.

There's no mention of such a thing on Pvault, that only acknowleges the A6 version. However according to both Susan R and Jesse, most songs were originally longer -if only slightly- that what we ended-up hearing, something that many circlating outtakes confirm to some extent, so it's not unthinkable that a longer version exists. Now is it much longer (it would often be 2 minutes) or particularly interesting (the edited parts were often edited for a reason), if it does exist at all, IDK.

I can assure u that a lot of songs/outtakes that no one has ever heard of or even mentioned by the Vault site do EXIST...we will get maybe big surprises with Super deluxe PR version due 4 release by WB!

That's what I'm hoping for. I'll still buy it but would be quite disapointed with discs full of stuff we've already got.

I agree...especially SOTT. Interestingly, Steve Wilson, who is well known for remastering and re-mixing classic albums in 5.1 surround sound, once said that SOTT was one of the projects he most wanted to re-do in surround. Now THAT would be wonderful !

Oh I'm not worried about those hundreds of wonderful recordings being in the vault. Let's just see how much of it is released, how it's released and how often.

it is funny we heard of this like 3 years ago... right? and now we got big news! A release date and some information... but now I am even more anxious to get some actual details.

If I was running this I would release a song title ever few days! there is like 112 or so days (and I bet it will really be out on the 6th or 7th)

Same here, it's a loooong wait, isn't it?
At least it will be fun if we don't get a tracklist until, say May. I reckon we'll get the first 'it's been cancelled' threads in March...

Universal, Sony and WB were all competiting for the rights to the vault. So, in a word, WB lost against Universal. The game is changed.

.

What kind of work exactly is needed for a re-release, knowing the album has been remastered in 2011 (if not in 2009!) and that they had just to pick outtakes already known by the biggest fans or extented b faces ? And all in one disc ! Knowing that Prince's tracks last often more than 6 minutes before being edited for an album.

.

It's highly doubtful that WB will release PR deluxe knowing they will lose the rights 5 or 6 months later. They won't do the job for Universal, with promoting and all. This news complicate even more the things, and they were already extremely complicated.

.

As are the things now, nothing new will be release before 2018.

Even from Universal there is still no word about reprinting post 1993 albums, or even making them available digitally. Now that they've got the rights, what are they waiting for to make them digitally available ?

And what about streaming rights for the 1994-2016 era ?

In fact, everything is still to be continued...

.

Edit : look at this interview from Mcmillan and Koppelman : http://www.billboard.com/...l-mcmillan

.

Not a word about Purple Rain deluxe, and they confess they only began to look into the vault...

It could sound a lot better. On my system, the CD (which has not been upgraded since 1986) sounds flat and distant, and I have to crank my receiver up about 5 notches to get any life out of it

Nobody's gonna spend money on that. 5.1 mixes are expensive and there's a near-zero market for them. Even video is usually too expensive to bother with, so I'm a bit surprised there's two "movies" coming in June; I suspect it's because they're "release ready" and I wouldn't be surprised if they're part of the "Universal gets access to the WBR era music" deal.

Wilson would do a 5.1 mix for free, I'm sure. They could include it in a "SOTT" box set, like they included 5.1 DVDs with the box sets of Fleetwood Mac's "Tuck" and "Mirage"

Yeah, sure, that guy's gonna do hours of specialist work in an expensive studio for free. And those aren't even the majority of the costs. Because he'd need access to the original multi-track, and who knows what state that is in.

.

Nothing like that is going to happen until they can prove that there's an audience out there that will buy such niche products in significant volumes. Anyone looking at Prince's sales numbers before 21 April 2016 will have big questions about that, and so far the numbers for 4Ever et al aren't exactly dambusters. PR Deluxe will be a massive test project, because if they don't succeed in selling big numbers of the long-awaited box set of Prince's biggest album, don't count on Universal et al to go out on a limb.

I can somewhat understand that but they did put down money for access to these songs, masters.

It'd be interesting to see what amount of risk they are taking here.

Or at least how many millions per year they think they can reap from the fans.

It's definitely a niche market, but they are absolutely fantastic to listen to. Sometimes artists will include a 5.1 mix within super deluxe editions. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here did that. That would be an incredible addition to any of the P reissues.

.

Certain artists, such as Pink Floyd, are better suited for that kind of listening experience. But if any of my favorite artists offer 5.1 mixes, I do buy them. I'd do the same with any Prince 5.1s, if they are ever offered.

One has no effect on the other. Stereo and 5.1 mixes are two different target audiences. Having said that, I doubt we'll see a 5.1 for any Prince release.

I would sincerely hope not!

Firstly, I think they should keep Purple Rain Deluxe to the Purple Rain era. Nothing before August '83 (except maybe stuff like Baby I'm a Star demo) and nothing after April '85.

Secondly, what we know about the Second Comming indicates that the film was never edited - so to restor the film and put it together would be a csstly proces - one I doubt they would do for what will be a test for future releases.
