Discussing the Vault - Part 4

(Part 3 auto-locked http://prince.org/msg/7/435056 )

Susan Rogers recently did a nearly 3-hour podcast: http://podcastjuice.net/t...interview/

(There is an existing thread in Associated artists about the podcast: http://prince.org/msg/5/437684 )

Two things she said I thought were of particular interest.

Regarding "Wally": Starting at 1:38:30, she gives a detailed account of the recording (and erasing!) of "Wally." She states he made a cassette before erasing the master. So the existing version could be from that cassette, or possibly from a re-recording that was done later. She doesn't know for sure whether he re-recorded it or not.

Regarding the PR re-release: Starting at 2:30:15, she specifically answers a question about the PR re-release, stating she and others have been involved with it, and that WB is putting a lot of effort into this.

This whole podcast is very interesting, I strongly encourage you to listen to it in full.

"I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

I've begun listening to it ut haven't reached that part yet. The PR thing sounds promising though: she's a fan too beyong being a former associate, so if she says it's gonna be good, it's likely that it is.

God Bless Susan Rogers. She is awesome. Everytime i hear her speak, I learn a lot and feel good about the future direction for the music, at least as much as she can influence.

.

Glad to hear Warner Bros is taking the PR rerelease seriously. I'm excited to see what they will offer.

.

Regarding her thought for P's music as a subscription service... I hope that subscription includes physical product. I will buy super deluxe box sets. I will NOT buy a streaming service subscription.

Realistically for such a project to work it'd require a lot of material being realeased, and realistically u're not gonna get a new deluxe box NPGMC Year One style every month, the best u'll have is cheaply printed CD's without individual art "official bootleg series" style, if any physical format at all. Streaming is certainly an option I would dislike though, because the material can be taken away from us at any moment (and will anyway be downloaded and pirated for posterity so it wouldn't be much of a deal for them because it'd be easier to get the rip for free while one can be tempted to pay for an immediate download). Let them give us DRM free lossless downloads and you can have your ocasional deluxe boxset for high profile releases.

Anyway this online store/service is our dream but there is no indication it'll ever happen.

This is great CandaceS, thanks for sharing. It’s really interesting to hear some of the technical details of Prince’s recording process. I always figured that he slowed down the tape to half-speed to achieve many of his pitch-shifting effects, but I hadn’t heard of the “Publison Infernal Machine” before now. I also had no idea that Prince was into Lynch's "Eraserhead".

I would support that. Ideally, each album should have its own boxed set, with all the B-Sides, outtakes and other relevant songs. Then provide lossless downloads for the rest of the vault material.
