That would be Lovesexy, The Rainbow Children, Xpectation and of course Purple Rain. That last one left a mark on the history of music. The genius of When Doves Cry remains unchallenged.

I don't think of SOTT as a challenging album. Yes, it's different from previous Prince albums, and has a wide variety of sounds, but it is still overall an enjoyable listen. It doesn't challenge the listener with political/religious lyrics, and doesn't have overly-foreign sounds. The political stuff on the album is more "generic" in the sense that it's still hopeful and approachable (in stark contrast to Family Name or Avalanche). The religious content on SOTT is also more approachable and "everyone is welcome" than perhaps a Rainbow Children or The War.

In lyrical content, I would say that The Rainbow Children is the most challenging album. It forces someone to listen to the lyrics (probably with the intention of someone accepting the lyrics). The music on its own is phenomenal.

As far as sonically challenging . . . in a weird way it might be Slaughterhouse or The Chocolate Invasion. The sounds on those albums are pretty sparse (some might argue that they're not Prince-caliber quality).

I always thought the NPGMC material was the weakest of his material overall. I think P probably realised that, bc he was still releasing CDs around that time.

It is unclear why he shelved Peace but High was shelved because he began working on TRC. I would assume he saw TRC as superior and more importantly he realized that TRC could be a critics darling (which it was) while High would be ignored as yet another expression of the post-Emancipation sound. It's possible that Peace was shelved for the same reason: to give more visibility to TRC. However the mere fact that Prince chose to reissue those tracks in 2004 shows that he was attached to the material, and realized that it was strong.

Still Rave Un2. The Black Album was the most challenging at first, but after reading orger critiques and analyses, listening to fan podcasts, and deconstructing his work, I say that it is one of his best works and one of my favorites along with LoveSexy and yes, GoldNigga.

SOTT because people who only listens to pop stations do have a clear mind what 1987 sounds like, because the lack of post-Purple Rain music on those stations. When I pull out Housequake, IIWYGF or It, they can't contemplate the scope or deph on that album. And how not Purple Rain it sounds.

Once it clicked, TRC became one of my favorite Prince releases. I can listen to it in repeat. All day. It's Prince and I can listen to what he says regardless of personal alignment. And it's funky. And it's not something you've heard a million times. If you can approach it with a clear mind, I promise you'll be dancing on the subway.

It's 'Inspired', that's for sure. A man has a right to believe what he wants. And write songs about it. And Prince could release it, say 'there it is' and leave it at that.

Loking back on his releases from five years prior to His last four, I say it's the strongest. They all have some good numbers, but never a full-on beginning to end party.

And if you want it live, there's the One Night Alone... Live box set. My copy someone left outside of their gate here in Brooklyn (by the gate it's a giveaway, on the curb it's trash - unspoken rule). If I kne who that person was I'd that them for hours of constant enjoyment.

But it's mature Prince. Artists evolve. They age. Perspective shifts. Maybe they find God. Or lose faith. Their dog dies. Divorce. Whatever. Don't expect 20 year old Prince.

Just putting that out there, because what was once a pickup to be a completest, turned out to be the most played album of 2015/2016. And tomorrow.

And when you do spin it, keep, your ears out for the "Haaaaay". I nail it every time. On the beat.

I would like to suggest the NPG albums are some of Prince's most challenging work. There is a variety and depth of approach to each which is quite confusing and, almost intentionally, off-putting about them. Gold Nigga is a gem but one married with bizarre rap noodlings. Exodus is a masterpiece that so few have heard. NewPowerSoul is a curious beast - some absolutely beautiful examples of pop music wed with banal, boring thump and grind...Sly-lite. All three challenging in the extreme and each three smothered with wonderful music.

Come...it is not because of the lyrics to the songs on that album. Someone would really have appreciate the musical arrangements of the songs on that album to enjoy it.

As a new listener, I find prince's music very accessible. Before some albums were pulled off tidal, I listened to every single one I could find. And I believe I found 44 or 45. I've listened to everything mentioned here except gold nigga...I never located that one.

The album I have the most trouble With is AOA..the music is accessible on that album but the mood takes me to a dark place.

I find that I like different albums for different reasons and I listen to different albums during different times of the day..some I like in the morning, some are good for driving, some are good if I have a monotonous job to do, and some are good for reflecting on the day.

Some albums I have had to listen to a couple of times before I got them but no matter what the album, the more I play it the more I like it. I love the albums between rave and musicology...they don't seem like they were aimed at the commercial market so much and I find them interesting.

I had never listened to any album by prince until after his death...and now I'm hooked. And, what is interesting, some of my friends are having the same experience. The more we hear, the more we like. Maybe what sounded shocking and challenging 30 years ago, is mainstream today or maybe I'm looking back so I don't have an expectation for where I think he is headed....but whatever, I find his music very accessible and enjoyable.

I'm only going to speak to the challenge being hard to like or listen to. And I'm admittedly to some degree musically illiterate, and a bit of a challenged listener compared to some here. But there are a lot of my kind out there so I imagine my views are shared by his commoner fans for lack of a better word. That being said with the passage of time and the resulting personal growth it's been delightful to learn some records I struggled with in the past are now some of my favorites.
ATWIAD posed some trouble for me following PR, as did Parade. Between how different they were from PR and myself being a very young adult they didn't click with me. Not so anymore as I love them both. Lovesexy is a different story. I didn't like it then and I don't like it much better today, but it's listenable.
Emancipation has a number of tracks I regularly skip over. It's just way too much of what is very bland to my ears anyway.
N.E.W.S. is meh. Same with TRC, Planet Earth, Xpectation. Those I suppose are the records I've been most disappointed with from an enjoyable listening experience sort of way.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I think the Rainbow Children is a challenging Prince album. I really love the music on TRC but since I am not a Christian, I find that the Christ references make me cringe a little. That and the segues/deep voice sections are off putting.

Something about the Prince era's where he has the (am I correct, calling it his) typhoon do -- are also challenging for me. I dislike that hairstyle so much that I tend to avoid Diamonds & Pearls & prince. The albums are fine but way down on the list and I never seek out video/posters/etc from these eras. However, Come, is one of my favorite albums so it is an exception sonically.

I think Prince's strength wasn't in creating something entirely new but in pushing where pop could go, what you could actually do with music and still call it pop music, the likes of When Doves Cry at number 1 or even just working on Crystal Ball comes to mind (pity so much of it went unreleased at the time).

I think his non-pop work, the jazz things especially, whether it's Madhouse or Xpectation/C-note, are interesting as a glimpse into his artistry and definitely fun as a fan to listen to but less essential in that there are people doing that kind of music better than him in the various fields; but they couldn't also do the pop thing. or the rock thing. or the funk thing. or all of it at once thing. I like how musically on The Rainbow Children he is again attempting (often successfully imho) to fuse his pop songwriting instincts with more than the usual funk/rock/soul hybrid sounds.

[Edited 1/16/17 18:43pm]

I don't think it is fair to categorize Prince as "just a pop artist" when he had such beautiful brilliant and distinctive sounds in a ton of his albums.

It is challenging in the way that he was reaching hard for a commercial radio-friendly sound on this one. Yes, it is easily accessible and mainstream; therein lies the challenge.
