Just checked my shelf, ALL of my CDs & LPs are still there.

Just checked my iPod, ALL of my rips of my CDS are still there.

I just can't feel sorry for anyone that trusts a streaming service and the whims of copyright holders with their "collection" of music. If you don't at least have digital backups then what do you expect.

I'm not trying to be an ass and make fun of anyone. I'd much rather help awaken people to the reality that trusting a streaming service is not the way to build a collection. Buy CDs & LPS and make digital backups or buy downloads and back them up. You never know when music, especially Prince's music, will not be available to stream.

Just sayin'... cool

.

It's not a matter of trust or collection building for most people. That's a wrongheaded, anachronistic attitude. It's a matter of convenience. Also, newer more casual fans don't instantly have "everything," so it's a bummer for them when the streaming access disappears.

.

You still use an iPod? Hahahahahahaha. What's up, 2007? I have everything uploaded to Google Music for streaming access from any device at my discretion, which is free. I also have Tidal (because I get the premium version for $5 a month as a member of Jack White's Vault). Tidal is just easier to access Prince for now. But I always have a backup plan.

.

Get out of town and go cross-country. Find out how easy you can "stream" that online music when there is no cellphone service.

eye will still have my Luddite devices playing P's music through narrow canyons, wide open spaces, and the great outdoors.

.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Yes, djThunderfunk. You forgot to add that you're saving yourself from the constant payment of streaming fees that more than overtake the cost of a one-time item purchase over time. You really do pay for that convenience of having everything at your fingertips all the time (that you are in reach of a wifi signal). And you may REALLY need your Prince tunes when you are out of reach of wifi! lol

One reason the music industry is in trouble is that it is much cheaper to stream music than own it. At £10/month to stream, that budget would allow just one album to be bought per month. I used to buy considerably more than that back in the day.

Interesting way to look at the situation--I can see that as an impact on buying downloads and such.

So sad--and of course the weakend state of our economy has given those with less achievement as their standard a reason to adopt such a stance. It's artificial, though, I think. Unfortunately, this state of mind feeds the oligarchic tendancies of our current state-of-being. Kinda like saying, "I like my poverty and servitude!"

I guess I need to shaddup on that yap, though, because I'm not trying to hijack a thread.

. Uh, I don't think you are understanding at all. It has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with the way music is consumed.

I certainly understand and see it all around, obviously. But this adds another element to contemplate for people who consider choices versus trends.

See, you are laughing, but my music is still on there.

I don't use ANY streaming service, it's like radio or renting music to me. I have everything I want on the shelf and/or ripped to the iPod.

I don't depend on a connection, or changing copyrights, or anything else. It's all on the iPod. And backed up. And on the shelf.

As for newer fans, they can START collecting CDs, or vinyl, or at least START buying downloads of out of print albums. The more they collect the less they risk losing.

.

It's not "like renting" it is IS renting. But it's also the future. Owning things is the attitude of the olds. You can have a "get off my lawn" attitude, but the kids do not care about ownership. At the end of the day, lack of streaming access hurts Prince.

.

I have obsessive, expansive Prince collections on cassette, vinyl, and cd, but I am not normal, nor am I the future.

I get all that. But, if that is the attitude, streaming not owning, then when it goes wrong they can expect the "old" that they've been laughing at for still collecting physical copies will probably pull a "told you so".

I also get that it hurts his legacy for those that are young fans, but not for long, a streaming deal will be worked out somewhere. Just saying, us old, behind the times fans are actually not behind, we're ahead. We are not affected by these copyright games. We can have the physical copies (or even backed up digital copies) and still listen to digital copies on any device.

Reminds me of a couple years ago, Amazon had 1999 for $10 digital download or $5 CD with a free digital download. A few people here were actually arguing for buying the digital copy because CDs were a dead format. Hilarious! I argued just buy the CD, get the free digital and, resell, gift or collect the disc, because you know... LOGIC! lol

You got me.

In all fairness though, the streaming is the future and physical copies are dead argument does get brought up here fairly often and the "oh no!! tidal doesn't have title X anymore" threads are fairly regular too. As long as the argument against physical copies persists and people keep freaking out over streaming availability, it's worth repeating.

Wow! I stopped burning discs once TB+ hard drives became affordable.

It's smart though, the more copies you have, the less chance you'll lose something.

Which brings up another point. Everytime one of these Tidal threads start, some people have access to stuff that others claim is gone. It's also repeatedly been said that Tidal's search engine has inconsistent results and people in various regions experience different results. Maybe Tidal's software just sucks?

i still don't understand the hate for Tidal and/or Jay Z but anyway, I have all his stuff in my music collection in iTunes and Goolge Play (boots, official, unreleased, etc) but i also have Tidal for him and everybody else. saves plenty of space on my iPhone and it has some cool exclusives every now and then.

Here's a policy - use streaming as a means to explore new music. For $10 a month, you can pick your streaming service of choice and have unlimited access to their catalog. If you find music that has deep meaning to you, buy it in a format that works for you. Don't depend on a streaming service for music that holds deep meaning for you. You don't own the music and you have no control over what the service offers. Any artist could be added or removed at any time without notice. Pretty simple.

Yup, I got rid of a lot of CDs a couple of years ago but I still have full collections of the works of artists that I will listen to the rest of my life.

I own every legitimately released hard copy of every Prince cd (and every lp and extended versions of singles) that was released back in the day. No way will I pay a monthly fee to 'rent' music. I don't listen to the radio, haven't in years, but if I hear a good song somehow I will search out the artist and purchase their cd. I have ripped all of my music to my hard drive and will burn copies from that so I can play them in my car. I keep the original cd's in their original case/sleeve and let them sit in my cd stand. No way is someone, either a streaming service or a fickle artist) going to take that away from me. I thought about joining Tydal so I could get a copy of Rave Into The Joy Fantastic because it's got different versions of those songs on it but I don't want ti line Jay Z's pocket with my cash. I'll wait and see what happens with the court case before I hand over my $ to them.

This is what I do.I have a massive album (vinyl) and CD collection, but I still pay $10 a month to Spotify so I can explore what I don't already have.I like being able to listen to music outside of my own collection and $10 a month is not alot of money at all.

With Prince I have always brought the physical albums etc as I like having the artwork and I am a completist. I also rip the albums into Itunes to have on my iPhone in the car and I back them up digitally too as so many of them are out of print now. I am so grateful I have always kept his.

Now to other artists: Ok a new album comes out I want, so I borrow it for FREE from the local library and copy into iTunes and back that up too if I like it enough (mostly I only like a few songs anyway).

The other artists most albums I did own I long ripped and stored digitially and I donated the physical albums to the Animal Welfare Charity Group to sell to raise funds as I don't have a lot of space to keep them all.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Agreed. And a great deal of Prince's album is still available for download on Tidal, as mp3 or flac. For 10 euros you can download an entire album and save it to disc or whatever.

Exactly. I do the same thing actually, besides having the physical albums, I make a copy and save them in the cloud, where I can access them anytime and anywhere.
