I think it was serviceable but not up to the expectations we expect. One thing that really turned me off was the final guitar solo he attempted. Why not, when that arrives, darken the stage and have a montage playing on the videoboard while the pipe through the speakers Prince's solo from the album. Would have brought the house down

Well I am fat, but I don't consider myself old or a Prince geek. I like Bruno Mars and neither he, nor any young performer "presses" me when their talent is on display.

It was not a tribute, it was "let me dress up as Prince in a purple coat, a ruffled top and IMITATE him". It wasn't as bad as Madonna's, at least he can sing and his band was appropriately dressed had some pep in their step. I don't play guitar but he was not impressing me at all- the solo was terrible.

Am I the only one who noticed they chopped up the intro to Let's Go Crazy? It wasn't even the same as the 45' version. I HATE that the shortened version is always used in these "tributes".

IDK what is is, my two other "Prince buddies" were texting me, saying they were very emotional and crying. I was :disbelief" and .

The Time was ok- was that the real Jerome or a new one?

The best tribute of the night was the Google commercial. I cried my eyes out, then I went back and watched it again, and cried my eyes out again.

I respect what Bruno Mars tried to do but Andre Cymone is right. Poor Bruno looked like a Vegas lounge act, no disrespect to the Prince tribute bands intended. The only thing that impressed me about it was that he was using Prince's guitar strap.

Grammys go crazy for Prince: Tribute with Bruno Mars and the Time took months of planning | Star Tribune
http://m.startribune.com/...413551993/

If nothing else at least we know they initially wanted to do something more worthy of him. The estate has everyone's hands tied. Bruno's performance may have been a good start to a proper tribute, but as a whole the Grammy's version was a mere nod to someone of Prince's stature. Anyone who can't see how seriously lacking and insulting it was just doesn't get it. As a fan I'm biased sure. But that did not come close to doing him justice. His greatness can't be overstated imo. I'm still waiting for someone to get it right. He was, still is, so much more than that gave him credit for.

Glad that's over and happy I put it off till today in favor of The Walking Dead last night.

A few good performances (The Time, Sturgill Simpson & The Dap Kings Horns, Gary Clark Jr & William Bell) amonst mostly talentless trash with an embarrasing bad insult of a tribute to Prince.

His playing was definitely stiff, and at a much slower bpm than P. Just shows how good P was.

Yes! They used the original recording in the beginning they should have used the original solo at the end too.

Shawy89, your fandom for Bruno Mars is causing you to go a bit overboard. I am a Bruno Mars fan, kind of, and his performance of his song was really good. But...

His Prince rendition was ho hum in its lack of creativity and its campiness. And I'm sure he nor the Grammys was going for campy. Bruno Mars is a really good talent. Bruno Mars shouldn't add this tribute to his highlight reel.

No disrespect to Bruno and I'm sure his heart was in the right place but someone should have told him the costume and replica guitar just scream cheesy Vegas lounge act. Also I don't get why some people think The Time was good. One there was no proper introduction so some people probably didn't really know who they were. And I think it would have worked better if Bruno performed with them and they did Prince songs like DSMR or Baby I'm a Star. This was supposed to be a Prince tribute after all.

I agree. They should have sang something that got the crowd thoroughly involved. Its already an uptight crowd; they don't want to move too much and sweat out their finest outfits of the year.

I think Bruno gets an E for effort, but that performance was a wrong move. Big budget karyoke.

I think the organizers FELT it was safe to do something Purple Rain-ish since that is the era that "most" know that dont really know Prince stuff. SO i think for Morris it had to be weird playing his own songs, I could see if the show wanted to recreate the first avenue but it was actually done the wrong way, first of all Minneapolis 1985?? that is not even the year of PURPLE RAIN. Next if you are gonna do "Lets go crazy" that opened Purple Rain should have been done first and then over to Morris, to me Morris was now the opening act playing songs that the audience by in large did not know. I get what Andre Cymone was saying and why he was angered this is exactly what I feared and also why I really did not like when GaGa did it for Bowie. All in all he is a talented guy and this is no disrespect to him for going out there and doing that. For me I would feel weird dressing up like PRINCE, if you are going to do that play a video in the background like you did with George Michael. Very poor planning on this show, the GM Tribute was awful and ADELE i am sorry but that shit was disrespectful to curse in it and right then and there she turned this into a ABOUT ME thing, people dont even mention george michael now when talking about it, it is all about her, that really was tacky.

Well,i was there and god bless bruno but,it just didn't work out.You cant just dress a person in purple with curly hair well you know the rest...But,for ANYONE TO CALL HIM NAMES IS WRONG.He wanted to pay his respect and for that he deserves some love.Andre S was ignorant to make that remark and he needed to delete it.For those of us that have been on here 4ever.We knew before hand what songs will be sung of prince's its always going to be the 80's.

Again, the article today (link above) in the Minneapolis paper stated that organizers had other, grander ideas but were unable to pursue those plans due to legalities with his estate. It's still no excuse for what they settled on in the end. I'm not sure how anyone in the music industry or associated with the Grammy organization convinced them self this was good enough. They fell waayyyy short. I recorded it cuz I was out of town, and immediately fast forwarded to the Prince segment to watch when I got home. I have zero interest in watching the rest of the show this year, or next year for that matter if this is how out of touch they are.
To his family, the estate, whomever: many are still waiting for a proper tribute in his memory. A Montage of his concerts, videos, and interviews spanning his entire career. His words, his dancing, his nusic, his voice, his face. Not a tabloid-like documentary either. Something real and pure. Perhaps his closest colleagues could include a few short words of their own to be heard during relevant parts. To be shared with all his fans around the world for free. But I'm afraid the whole tribute ship has passed. Don't know of any more opportunities with live audience type awards shows.

Not a fan of Bruno Mars at all. A few of his songs are downright horrible, and there aren't any he has released that I have liked.

That said, I recognize that he has talent. I was glad the performance wasn't riddled with corniness as I had feared, but it lacked energy, IMO.

In any case, I am happy to see young artists looking up to Prince and wanting to honor him.

Well, I'm glad Bruno Mars, real name Peter Hernandez, at least didn't try and do "Gett Off" and wearing a replica of that outfit Prince wore on the MTV Video Music Awards.

prince

I think his heart was in the right place but he should have just dressed as himself instead of getting dressed up as Prince, which turned it into an impersonation of Prince. He began learning guitar after being inspired by Jimi Hendrix. He has a history of impersonating Elvis. He was an Elvis impersonator when he was a kid known as Little Elvis in Hawaii (he is Hawaiian Latino and I'd like him to proudly use his real name), and he was the kid in the movie Honeymoon in Vegas impersonating Elvis. Elvis impersonators call themselves tribute artists.

Prince Tribute? Well, that was a nice try... but not a tribute in a true sense of that word. Bruno was solid - he is not some top-notch performer, but i can't imagine how happy he was, knowing that Prince is his favorite composer and performer.

'Let's Go Crazy' is a nice choice... but he has much more songs in his cataloque, doesn't he? Purple Rain is not his only album, is it? When they say Prince Tribute, in my mind i see Santana soloing on Last December, for example. I see some jazz musicans playing some Prince medley, i am seeing a lot of things. Not a toddler show with costumes and guitars...

There will never be another Prince. Ever.

.

I'm guessing this will probably be one of the last big tributes for Prince??

.

Everyone tried their best for us fans, but nobody is ever happy. Bruno did good, better then Madonna did, and 100% better then Adele did for George Michael. And if Andre thinks he could do it better...where was he last night? So he can just sit down and shut up.
