Well, I think it stands to reason that people shouldn't be paying money for bootlegs. But does it really have much, if any, impact on Prince's livelihood? I mean, i agree with his stance on bootleggers to a degree. But a lot of the stuff that's being bought and sold and traded are live shows that Prince never released on CD or DVD. So, that doesn't really impact his bank balance one way or another.

Exactly. The fan base needs to transition the definition of success. His life used to be about charts, $$$ in his wallet to a new normal based upon the sheer # of new fans introduced to his life's work, popularity on modern culture (films, books, etc...).

He can live on forever in the hearts and minds of a VERY large population but taking videos off of YOUTUBE is the exact opposite behavior needed right now.

Thanks so much ElGorillos!!! How did you find it?? Had you read it back in 1998? At any rate, here is a screen shot of that magazine page.

I've been looking closely at notes and letters handwritten by Prince. In so doing, I ran across this note that he wrote explaining that bootleggers were a threat to his livelihood. Many of you have probably already seen it, but I had not. His statement is not dated, but it is still relevant today, even after his passing. Plus, his beautiful handwriting, along with the picture of his hand holding his cane make the note worthy of framing.

I'm seriously thinking about printing it on card stock and framing it. I knew the moment I saw this note that it was professionally designed. And his handwriting is among the most beautiful and distinctive I have ever seen. heart

Hey, Love!! Let me clarify. I agree that some videos should stay on YouTube, but not all of them. I think there needs to be enough to keep Prince's music accessible for generations to come, but not to the point that no one needs to buy DVDs and CDs or downloads. Of course, that's assuming that the estate will eventually get around to releasing music. Same thing with SoundCloud, Mixcloud, and the other "cloud" sharing sites.

The biggest problem now is PAID for streaming!.

.

Artists do not make money from paid for streaming.

.

As paid for streaming grows, revenue from digital sales is down 20%.

.

This is a massive hit to artists.

.

If I was a label I would refuse my artists to be on streaming websites - however I may allow 20 second clips for streaming just like, for example, Amazon.

.

This will come as no surpise to those who are aware of the staff behind "The
Truth Collective". In fact, the team is headed by Chris Dawson. previously of
the "Crystal Ball" magazine in the 80's, a UK based fanzine. Mr Dawson has
previously been convivted of committing fraud against UK fans of "Prince" and
was imprisoned in 1989.

This finally explains the anonimity behind "The Truth Collective". I think
this should be a lesson to all fans of The Artist as to how you should be very
careful who you give your money to in the future !

Good luck recovering those subscription fees !!!

Did anyone else notice the (purposeful) misspelling "livelyhood"? P didn't make many spelling errors. I've seen that before but without the image.

I did notice that. He always had to put his own spin on words. I'm still amazed at his gorgeous handwriting.

Saw his note where he wrote hope u trip was cool, not UR trip. Small detail, but let the man be human please.

"I have some bootlegs of Lianne but I wouldn't sell them. But fans sharing music with each other, that's cool ... But when you hear something [on bootleg] you're just hearing something that's not finished."

Prince's issue was always that people who weren't him were making money off his art, whether it be Warner Brothers, a bootleg label selling, or a file-sharing website (via adverts or paid subscriptions). This was pretty much the one thing he was consistent with over the years.

I just received an orgnote inviting me to join a bootleg site. I will not publicly shame that font here, (have sent them a note back) but: BLURGGHHH. Stop this nonsense. P. was right. I am happy to spend my money on something that will benefit the right people/artist (or in this case the estate). Have done so for the past 30-something years and I can't wait for new stuff to come out (music and/or visual). But I hope this @$$hattery stops. mad

Unless the bootleg site you were invited to SELLS bootlegs, what's your issue? If they SHARE bootlegs for free, then it's a good thing as it cuts into the profit of the bootleg sellers.

If you have watched or listened to anything on youtube that wasn't released then you may as well download a bootleg or two (or hundreds) as that is no different. Both are SHARING bootlegs with other fans.

I assure you it is absolutely possible to support everything the estate releases with your money while enjoying everything that they do not release but has leaked for free. I've been doing this for decades. I even purchased 4Ever even though I've had Moonbeam Levels for nearly 30 years and in the same quality for several years.

Trust me, if you have every release but have never listened to or watched a bootleg, you are missing out.

Just sayin'... wink

Thanks djThunderfunk! I enjoy listening to your stuff!!

Sorry if my message wasn't all clear, but this was SELLING (i.e. $$ or more precisely:EURO) and not SHARING. The whole thing was super aggressive. Perhaps it just set me off.

And yes, I have watched a lot of stuff on YouTube and listened to shared bootlegs. The first one being the Black Album in 1988 as shared with me by my friend from down the street when I was in highschool. Happy memories. music

A-ha! In that case I completely agree with your disgust!

I know some people still purchase bootlegs but in this day and age it just doesn't make sense.

I stopped buying bootlegs when they TOTALLY disappeared from French wreckas stows after police raids in 96. I had maybe 50 at that point. I had just moved from the city I was in high skool where I had fellow Prince fans who were in touch with boots dealers, and the next thing I know u can't find them in stores no more. I managed to find one 97 show once on a trip to Paris in 97 or 98 and that's all after early 96. I would get free cassettes of T's releases from my old pals every once in a while when I'd meet them again and that's it. Then in 2004 I got an internet connection for good and didn't have to worry about it no more.
