Audiophiles :Analysing the song inventory released by the court. Is it what you expected?

I've been having a scan through the court document listing the tracks inventoried as part of the the estate. It not comprehensive, but how far do you think it is from completion?

Live recordings aside, it near a thousand songs (which fits some of the old rumours), and goes beyond Tyka's count already, but, I can't help but feel a little dissapointed.

Yes there are pleny of unreleased songs, but we've heard the majority of them already.

One version of When Doves Cry (did he never keep the version with bass?)

Four versions of Purple Rain (I wonder which ones?)

Eight versions of Under the Cherry Moon??

And a lot of the unreleased tracks look like audio snippets from his movies.

What are your thoughts on the content. Spotted anything interesting?

I was a bit dissapointed too. This can't be all,can it? How does this list compare to the list of unreleased songs on Princevault?

I know what you mean, there's a lot of familiar songs on there alright and being able to skip through the so fast kind of ruins the magic.

But then again, I chose a song in my head that had had two different releases, Beautiful Strange, and it wasn't even on the Exhibit 3 inventory song list (it's on the exhibit 2 released songs list though). Similarly Tick, Tick, Bang has had one official release and one bootleg very different to the album and it's only on the song list once.

Being that I came up with those examples in all of 20 seconds and the integrity of the list is already falling apart i'm not going to worry about it being anything near definitive.

I haven't had a chance to compare old lists, but there are quite a few missing on the new list.

I'm hoping that means there are more reels to review as opposed to some things simply weren't kept or couldn't be found or saved.

I was wondering about the same thing and asked the same question on the "estate" thread but to no avail.

It is very disappointing if that´s all there is but .....there are so many songs missing on that list , songs that even the not so diehard fans already have, songs that have been circulating on the net for decades, and yet they are nowhere to be found on that list.

This list can´t be complete.

The other songs are probably in the other vaults or stored somewhere in some other form and shape, digitally.

Just check some of those songs on Princevault and compare to this new list, or the songs we are already familiar with....nowhere to be found on this new list.

I looked for Adonis and Bathsheba, Cosmic Day, Wally...etc.

Songs that we know exist, songs that people like Questlove even played.

But....not on this list.

Yeah, lots missing, but also new titles. I wonder if a splice together of the two lists will give us a near final picture, give or take a few dozen?

I believe they are not finished with inventory. I thought I saw a Nov date for this inventory we know they said they were not finished cataloging the clothes for instance same we have actually heard songs we don't see on this list.

Yeah, just skimming I saw a lot of songs not listed like Electric Intercourse (!), Come Elektra Tuesday, Katrina's Paper Dolls, If It'll Make U Happy, Everybody Want What They Don't Got, All My Dreams......that's nowhere near a complete list.

It would still be far from even our lowest expectations.

I´m really not saying this in order to question how prolific he was but.....most of us fans and even people in his camp know thst there must be more.

There is SO MUCH missing here.

A bit off topic but....the list of vehicles also looks a bit odd to me. I don´t see the Bentley, just the 1991 and 1984 BMWs, the UTCM Buick, a bus, the motorcyles ( didn´t know he still had both, thought the black one was the modified Purple Rain motorcycle....but I also read that there were several of those). The Purple Plymouth Prowler is not on that list. I read that he totalled the Thunderbird and he probably didn´t have the Mustang anymore but the list still seems to be incomplete.

My understanding was that there was never even a rough mix run off with the bass. He simply took it out of the board mix.

Noticed '03 Bonnie And Clyde on the list. AFAIK, it merely contains a borrowed lyric from If I Was Your Girlfriend... Guess that's enought to list it among his assets?!?

I don´t know but I do know that Arrested Development were faced with a lawsuit for using a sample of the word "Tennessee" back in 1989. Or was it 1990 ? wink

I mean, I understand people suing because of borrowed melodies or samples but..come one...just one word? lol

One burning question comes to mind. We had heard that Prince hadn't let the old tape rot and that they were digitally transfered as some point in the late 90's.

But if they were, surely a digital catalogue would be simple for the estate to reference? It this incomplete list is still growing, it suggests that they are taking the information from tape.

Did we?!? I thought there was still a lot of speculation that most had NOT been transferred and worry that it was too late for some?

Well , according to Hans Martin Buff the old tapes were in dire need of baking and digitalizing but he said that Prince wasn´t really open to such suggestions.

But there were other stories as well, saying that he was indeed taking care of the old reels and digitalizing them.

I think otherwise we wouldn´t hear samples of old songs in comparatively "new" songs such as Acknowledge Me, which samples The Line.

When I say we heard, I meant it as speculation. I thought at least one engineer had claimed he had. Obviously doesn't make it true. I think its clear he didn't based on what we know to date.

However, several engineers said Prince would send them down to get an old song to take a part from or rework, and that would suggest there was an easy to find label system. Even if he fetched them himself, they'd have to labelled to find what he wanted. So I'm not sure why the estate is still working on the list 9 months later.

Another interesting point is that, if the list is building up from tape reels, you would expect songs listed to reflect recording sessions. This list doesn't reflect that.

Thanks a lot. I was wondering why the other list was so short. Then again, I also didn´t really expect him to keep every single car he owned....but it seems he really kept most of them, including the old Z3 BMW. The Thunderbird is still on the list. But a 1993 model? That surely must be a mistake, can´t imagine him owning a 1993 Thunderbird. Maybe for the employees? Any idea what happened to the old Thunderbird? As far as I know it was totalled at some point.

That canary yellow BMW was sent to him from my hometown.

And I used to drive that 1984 BMW a long time ago but I wasn´t the proper owner. wink Great car but considered a pimp ride over here, just like that canary yellow 835 BMW.

Nice list of vehicles.

For sure.

I hope those in charge will know what to do with all this.

It´s nothing personal but I doubt those in charge have any idea of what they have there.Which is normal....I don´t expect my musician friends´ families to know exactly what is what, what was recorded when etc. but I hope some people who know a thing or two about Prince´s body of work will be consulted sooner or later.

It´s one thing to grab something from the vault and release it but it is a whole different issue to archive everything properly and release it systematically.

This might sound strange but I wish some oldschool orgers such as BorisFishpaw, Langebleu, Bart, the Uptown staff, Duane T., Susan Rogers, Morris Hayes, etc. were involved in future releases.

Those in charge at Paisley right now are probably the nicest people but there is a ton of work to be done in the next years, and I would not want them to lose anything or release stuff randomly.

As much as Prince hated bootleggers, at least those bootleg circles knew exactly what they were doing. Many of their illegal releases were pretty solid in terms of artwork, chronology, etc. etc.

I think the next couple of months will be very important.

So far I am a bit disappointed in those who claimed to be acting in the best interest of Prince.

The song list is only partial. We already have leaked bootleg songs (or parts) in the past few years that are not on that list. It's even missing songs that were on the official Crystal Ball 2 list of song contendors, isn't it?

examples:

Everybody Wants What They Don't Got

Strange Way of Saying I Love You

Cosmic Day

Eggplant

Go

What is interesting is, if they come from the reels and dates, then songs like Everybody Wants, Blanche and I Could never take the place of your man were recorded within 3 days of each other. Yet only one is listed.

If every reel contained an individual song, the vault would need to be a lot bigger than it is.
