The only non-Prince version of When Dpves Cry that I like is by Green Sky Bluegrass who did, as you might expect, a bluegrass rendition. I think it works because it is so totally different from what Prince did; however, I have other Prince fan friends who don't care for it. (Thought, come to think of it, they don't like bluegrass. So it might be as much that as someone else doing Prince's song.)

Anyway...my point is that most people make the mistake of trying to do Prince songs as they think Prince would do them - which is a fool's errand. Nobody is Prince, nobody can do his songs they way he did. So if you're going to attempt it, do something completely different. Don't put on a ruffled shirt, shiny purple coat and play a cloud guitar. You just look like an asshat.

I came to post the same newyorker review link and agree. It fell short, especially after repeatedly building it up!! hmph!

Agree, New Yorker nailed it. James Corden said he almost dropped the phone when he heard about it. Really? Maybe he meant he felt like dropping the phone.

Think about if the George Michael tribute was someone in shades, leather jacket and faded blue jeans. That would've been widely mocked. But because apparently Bruno Mars is off limits for criticism within the industry all the media stories about his performance were positive.

cool me too! I have had folks ask me why Jesse was not at that media conference. Jesse had brought his 12 yr old daugther to the show so she could experience her first Grammys, so I'm sure he jetted out of there soon after their performance since it was a school night.

True, and while I agree in spirit with what Ken Rudulph said in the link above, I would have avoided the whole “nostalgia act” thing altogether. There are lots of artists who could have done something interesting and creative with it. It would have been a far more fitting tribute to his continuing influence going forward, establishing an authentic link between Prince and progressive contemporary music.

What they needed was a Rock God guitarist, a hell of a singer, and a pretty snappy dresser. I think Lenny Kravitz would have been perfect if only one person was utilized, but I truly believe they should have had a Hall of Fame line-up to honor Prince. Trading riffs, trading song verses ... Sorry, but nothing less than an A+++-lister would do for the Grammy gig. The BET tribute was the best, bar none. So maybe the Grammys took the easy way out and offered less than 10 minutes for 39+ years of legend.

Very well put fen!. star

The vibe I'm getting from all of this is "forced". More organic tributes to Prince will follow. Not massive corporate messages, yet very powerful. We have been seeing this in so many artists of all kinds and ages since he passed. We are still in deep mourning, not unusual for a beloved.

If a true tribute were to take place, or if the Grammys tribute would have "pulled out all of the stops", the ones who Prince would have respected to pull it off would have been: Carlos Santana, Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder, Mavis Staples and of course, Joanie Mitchell(IMO).Personally, I would have enjoyed just listening to songs or snippets for the time allotted from all of his different eras, with visions of Prince in the background (as they did with the GM tribute), allowing only one purple spotlight to shine down on a single mic along with his cane and symbol gloves on a stool (or a similar arrangement), then at the end of the tribute, releasing 2 white doves. I say this as my personal thoughts simply because "can't nobody do it like Prince does"

Thanks Purplepoppy. I feel a bit rotten being so critical, but I think that it needs to be said. It probably speaks of the state of mainstream popular music more than anything else. There’s always great stuff going on, but we can’t look to these glitzy industry events to find it.

Bruno's performance was nice, but hollow, empty. It cannot be anything else. Prince is gone. And commercial productions are so not a tribute to him. The spirit that brought them to life has moved on--and the music without Prince's soul, well, is sad.

Perhaps somone will invite all the artists Prince mentored to sing their own songs. Share with us their spirit he saw in them.

Yea, Like the SonofPrince. cool wink biggrin

Good question. His last public appearance was in October, as he was the headliner of the Roots festival in NYC.

.
I'll take you up on that!
I would enter the stage and announce that we are going to watch Prince himself.
It'd cue the control room and they would show the 2004 Grammy duet with Beyonce followed by selected video portions from the Lovesexy and Montreux shows.
.
Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.
