I agree with what others have said re: Bruno. Prince would not have approved. And Prince dang sure would have never dressed up like someone else in this situation. I respect Bruno Mars for trying but it was a miss with me.

What can you say about The Time? They've earned my respect. They've aged, like we all have. They can still bring it. The problem I had was with booking them. This was allegedly a Prince tribute. Sure, Prince created The Time and wrote those songs. But that's not common knowledge, especially for the current generation. And they made no mention of it when they introduced The Time, so most of the audience had no idea that was Prince stuff they were hearing. Bad move, IMHO.

The Google commerical got me. I cried my eyes out. Then I watched it again. And I cried my eyes out again. Even though it was an ad, it was the perfect tribute, IMO. I just wished they'd have put his symbol or his picture up at the end.

I would still be crying today if they'd done that.

Actually him and Jesse Johnson co-wrote the songs.

"It is advertedly offensive to prince because it just made him seem like a has-been more than a genuis who happened to have a peak in the 80's.". Exactly. Prince's musical evolution was reminicent of Miles Davis: Prince changed musicians every few years, experimented with different musical technologies, pioneered the use of synthesizers and drum machines to create a sound both accessible to the mainstream and appealing to followers of sub-genres. Even when his albums stopped going Gold and Platinum, he never stopped being creative and chasing his artistic muse. That is a legacy that future generations could benefit from learning. Also, the song choice was so obvious. If Bruno wanted to sing a hit, he could have sung "Sign O' The Times"-what's a more fitting song in this times?

As long as he doesn't come out in the peace time jean jacket and yellow cloud, I'm ok with that.

Which makes it even less of a Prince tribute, doesn't it? Oh well, I'm glad The Time got some exposure. Compared to everything else I saw in that show, they were a welcome breath of musical talent.

I liked it. It was subtle, honest and real.
It might also make people curious about the song and wonder why it was used in a tribute.
My friend, a longtime fan, didn't know that P wrote that song.

Not saying Bruno is not talented, I am saying that it is disturbing to see him dressed up as Prince.

This was not a tribute at all in my mind. A real tribute would have been more intimate and would have actually taught the audience something about the man. Bruno dessing up to impersonate Prince does not accomplish that. It is disrespectful to Prince and his legacy.

The only one who can pull off Prince.....is Prince.

Thank God these tribute covers are over. Bruno was horrible. The vocals were off. The guitar playing was poor. The overall feel was so uninspiring. Although the Adele George Michael tribute had problems, at least it was art. Bruno reduced Prince to a Vegas novelty act.

The Google commercial was so much more heartfelt...which is sad.

There is one more: The Oscars.
But their method is to show the actual performer.

Seems professional musicians do not unsderstand the concept of a tribute. You don't see Emma stone doing a scene from a Meryl Streep movie as a trubute to Meryl, the thought of it is ridiculous, as it is for Bruno mars to dress as prince and do one of his songs as a tribute. No other profession honors their piers in this fashion, one football player recreating a great play of another player as a tribute. I think they just need to dig out the old dictionary and read the definition of tribute, and it would be clear to them. Glad it over.

Totally agree with you. it's downright bizarre and disrespectful when you think about it and i'm sure P would not have wanted it.

Agree with purplerabbithole. Why no Prince footage or clips to tie everything together?

This is really splitting hairs but when they showed the Symbol before the performance it was really short. Shades of Stonehenge a la Spinal Tap. (yes, i'm old)

I would love to thank Bruno Mars for taking the tribute seriously, because he really does seem like a fan. I certainly thought The Time did a good job.

Having said that, I don't ever plan on watching that again. I would look at Sheila's tribute 100 times before I ever look at that tribute again.

That didn't seem creative or heartfelt in any way (see George Michael's tribute); it just seemed like big budget karyoke (Bruno's set, not The Time).

I just don't get why people keep singing Prince songs just as a re-sing of how he did it. He had such a unique voice and style that it does not translate well when someone just copies them verbatim. Either sing the song in a completely unique way or add some creative elements (like many people singing the song or changing the instruments or adding shortfilm background or something) or sing something else as a tribute.

That was a disappointment.

I really don't get how you guys are so bothered by Bruno dressing up as Prince. It's mind boggeling to me.

I mean, even Prince knew that his Purple Rain outfit is a staple. People came dressed as him at concerts.

During the BET concert Janelle Monae and her dancers wore outfits of his past and it worked.

I enjoyed it. Is he Prince, hell no. But he channeled Prince in that guitar and I could tell he tried really hard not to mess it up.

I'm satisfied. cool

I was kind of scared to watch it when I got home with all of the drastically mixed reviews. I didn't love it, and yes it could have been so much more. But they tried, and I think their hearts were in the right place.

No, Bruno should not even be holding that guitar, and dressing like PR Prince was corny. But at least he's a musician who actually plays, and writes his own material, even if it isn't the most original stuff ever recorded.

The fact is, with Prince gone, it truly is the end of an era. It will never be the same, and everyone else will pale in comparison. I'm just thankful I was around to see it all in real time. I would rather see people try to tribute him and not do him justice, then completely ignore his unforgettable contributions to music, as some award shows have done.

Also, I thought the Google commercial was kind of sweet. I like to see people inspired by him.

It was an okay performance, no children died because of it. So, every one take a chill pill. The Time are always great. Sure it was only a Purple Rain tribute, but it was respectful and not done in disrespect. Prince would have been okay with it. I mean he sat through his own tribute at the BET awards and THAT was a hot mess.

I probably would have chosen the color purple to wear, but not imitating his style. But Bruno is a Prince fan and this is how he chose to do it.
