Is there anything more annoying than fading out a song just as the guitar solo kicks in, when you know the original has plenty of time left on the clock? Or a much beloved song having the word "ass" censored while the next song is the (mercifully) uncensored version of Sexy MF?

Whoever put this collection together really didn't give much of a shit about the music.

I would love to hear a cleaned up version of "Purple Rain" with the extra verse. Any chance of that happening??

A mix tape for the neighbor who wonders why you're blasting Prince music all the time.

Not very professional, nor representitive of the whole Purple Picture.

.

This being the 4th compilation, i wonder if anyone at the WB is really paying attention to what

they are deciding on?

.

At least, around 2006, a guy with the handle "tangerine17" kept us here at the Org up to date and possibly took a little criticism about how, what, and why 'Ultimate' was released.

.

The only official Prince album i don't own is "The Very Best Of"

THAT is the one for casual fans.

Not this last one.

i'm not sure anyone really knows who the demographic is, for '4ever' lol

.

Yeah, i bought it on the strength of one "unreleased" song, cuz i felt guilty about acquiring so many other unreleased titles.

Assholes found my weak spot...

So far I have tracked down this cd from:

EU (digipack and jewel case)
France
Italy
USA
Canada
Mexico
Japan
Taiwan
Korea

Any other releases I don't know about! Please let me know smile

I think it is a very good greatest hits compilation. "What a pop/funk/soul/rock genius" is what people who do not know Prince that well will say, and "what an eye for a great tune"

So, mission accomplished. Could have been much worse...

And, nay, I did not buy it smile I wasn't the target group cool

The extra verse is awful and there's a reason why it was not used.

The kids got me the Prince4Ever set. I'm loving it.

They also got me a book Prince Chapter and Verse A Life in Photographs, by Mobeen Azhar. I'm loving it too!

I'm one happy Momma today.

Other than the fact that we lost George Michael today.

I would take off "Peach".

His only UK number 1 belong there, even it belongs to Sony (or whoever it was?)...

I would add "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". music

I mean it WAS a hit and Peach wasn't even a good song imho.... (it was a minor hit though iirc).

I made an amazon pre-order for the cd,

I like this compilation, because we now gets all those SINGLE EDIT versions, finally...

I own the EU digipack and I made an order for the UK Jewelcase as well..

Such a good compilation, besides Peach all those songs are classics in the Prince world (imho they are classics).

Regarding Prince4Ever, Why are the following songs starred as being "previously unavailable on CD":

Little Red Corvette

Let's Go Crazy

Let's Work

Take Me With U

Alphabet St.

Girls & Boys

Glam Slam

--

All of these songs have been released on CD, haven't they? Is it the specific version of each song that is different? The versions of LRC and LGC on Prince4Ever are different than the album versions.

These are the shorter single edits for radio that for the most part have not been released on commercial CDs before--all of them definitely have not appeared on any of the previous commercially released compilations.

Sexton, thanks for the clarification. I figured that these "previously unreleased" songs were just different versions.

I totally agree that TMBGITW should be on the compilation instead of Peach.

Also, Money Don't Matter 2Nite isn't on Prince4Ever, which I thought was odd.

Did anyone else notice on Prince4Ever that in "Gett Off," thw word ass is edited out of the song, namely "move your big a** round so I can work on that zipper baby." But in "Sexy MF," there doesn't seem to be any editing out of curse words or the word ass. Did anyone else notice this?

That's the actual single version of "Gett Off" with the word "ass" edited out.

The reason why "Sexy MF" is uncensored is because there is no edited version. The version on the single sent to stores and stations is the album version uncut.

The censored song "Sexy Mutha" was later the b-side to "My Name Is Prince" and never a proper A-side like the other previously released songs on the compilation.

I'm not used to the single version of Gett Off. I'm used to the album version or the version on The Very Best of Prince, which are basically the same version as far as I can tell. I haven't heard/don't hear Gett Off on the radio very often.

I've got a My Name is Prince EP with a clean version of Sexy MF. The mother fucker is covered by an aaawooa, (or however you spell that noise Prince makes biggrin)

Wasn't there also this same version on the clean version of the prince album?

I'm curious. The article states...

originally recorded in 1982 during the 1999 sessions and later considered for the never released Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic album

...but, I have the album, Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic.

The Rave album was originally going to be released in 1989 (with a completely different track listing, other than the title song). It was scrapped for the Batman soundtrack and never released in that version. The album that was released in '99 has no similarity other than the one song.

its unfortunate that they didn't even put Moonbeam Levels directly after 1999 to hear how it would have flowed naturally in the original configuration. do i have that placement correct?

I walked past HMV ( record store) in Bath UK yesterday and stopped dead. They were banging out Gotta Stop Messin about. For the first time in years I went into the store. Sounded great. Wouldn't buy the compilation album though. Yuch ! But I would buy all the 12" recordings on a Cd. Nicely remastered. Yes please.

I'm not sure "Moonbeam Levels" was ever truly considered for the 1999 album. It would be an awesome addition, though! The previously circulating outtake did seem like it would segue directly from the bomb explosion at the end of "1999", but the version on 4ever has a drum loop intro. Would be interesting to play the album version of "1999" and the released version of "Moonbeam Levels" back to back to see what it sounds like!

I really don't get why some are complaining about the edited versions used on this compilation.

IMO a Greatest Hits compilation should have the hit versions that made it to the charts.

I mean, we all prefer the full-lenght version of WDC for example, but the 7" edit was good enough to make it a nr. 1 hit right?

The shorter versions also make space for more tracks on the cd's.

I couldn't justify buying the whole 4Ever package just for one song, but I did break down and download just Moonbeam Levels today. Glad I did - it sounds better than any version I've heard before.

Of course it doesn't sound as crisp and clean as something from AOA or HNR 1-2, but it still sounds good to me!

In the Estate documents, there is an article that (paraphrasing) said Prince tinkered with the PR Deluxe off and on, but Prince considered PR his masterpiece and did not want to alter it. This may explain why it has taken so long to be released. Pure speculation on my end.
