Whether these divorce records should ever have been sealed isn't the point. The fact is they were sealed. What public good comes from unsealing them now? What is in there that the public needs to know? Absolutely nothing.

Lol, people need to get a grip in my opinion, life is what it is. Every time something comes up, there seems to be this big freakout over it. People need to stop looking for reasons to be angry, upset, overwrought and so on and so on. And of course this news comes on the anniversary. It's interesting how every month something is released that usually causes upset.

Good point. It does seem that a lot of over reaction and manufactured drama keeps happening.

How could the divorce records be worse than the revealation by the ME that P died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl?

In the US most court proceedings are public record with few exceptions. Did you guys know that you can literally go down to the courthouse and see your neighbor's divorce file or criminal record. You can even find out how much they paid for their house.

We had government classes in school.

The judge is following the law without regard to a person's social status, which is what a judge is supposed to do. He already wrote in the legal opinion that he released that there was no sufficient grounds for the file to remain sealed. He specifically cited pertinient case law and the fact that the Ex put herself in the public eye as the reasons for his ruling. Have people forgotten that already?

When the American system works the way it's supposed to everybody is supposed to be treated equally and celebrities should not get special privileges except in rare circumstances.

true that. a lot of this is even online now

Anywho, Mani's settlement is already public record. She got in the neighborhood of $276,000.00 or something. It's on the carver county's judicial court public site thingey - along with all the other traffic violations, civil judgements, and custody agreements that are available for public scrutiny. I can't believe everyone here hasn't seen it already as it seems no other stone has been left unturned in the months since he passed.
I don't like the Star Trib either. It takes almost an act of Congress to cancel your subscription which is a pet peeve of mine. A click or two online should take care of the matter. Instead they force you to call and speak to a customer service rep only to have them harass you about your decision.

I think that was a small amount of the divorce settlement. Could have been back temporary spousal support he did not pay. I believe she received much more than $276k. I think the reason it was sealed was to not show their finacial statements and Mani was worried about how she would look.

I do find it interesting that Omarr and Bremer also tried to stop it and remember there was a work product attached to the divorce that has been sealed at the probate court.

If she got only $276K after five years, she either signed one of the worst pre-nups ever or had poor representation. She should have walked away with at least $10 or $20 million. Does anyone have an idea of what Mayte got, if anything?

I've never understood this. Why should someone get a huge settlement just because they were married to someone? Especially when no kids were involved.

Many states have community property laws. Your spouse is going to get half unless you have a prenup. Like I said she got more thatn 276 unless she did have a prenup but there was another work product associated with this divorce so it may have been more. Omarr and Breamer both tried to step in and s top the file f rom being opened so we shall see soon. It cannot be anything worst than the pain pill issue so I think M2 is more worried about how she will look.

My sources indicate that Mani's haul from the dissolution of her marriage to Prince was MUCH, MUCH larger than a quarter of a million $.

We all know that the Star Tribune is looking for drug allegations, nothing more and nothing less. Some in the media seem hell bent on proving that Prince was an addict for years. No one can possibly care how much money Mani got in the divorce. I hope that this record is so dull that the paper looks stupid for spending time and money on the effort.

It's possible Manuela was using the safety argument when her concern was really that the financial details in there would embarrass her in some way.

Generally, I agree that any legal records that are public for "regular" people should also be public for celebrities. At the time of the divorce, the court allowed an exception to the law here (by allowing the documents to stay private) but that doesn't mean that the reasons for that exception should go on indefinitely.

-

And it is a little funny to see some folks so upset by a 10-year-old divorce file being made public when I've read months of posts by some orgers who are incredulous that the full autopsy report -- a document that is both typically legally private as well as full of extremely intimate details -- isn't being revealed to all of us. C'est la vie...

babynoz said:

Perhaps, but people also discuss private details of the guy across the street, co-workers, church members, etc. It's what people do and it's not panic worthy. People have been discussing Prince's private business on the org since forever. I don't understand the selective outrage? (Generally speaking, not you personally).

Wasn't Mayte already threatened and had a bottle thrown at her? It doesn't seem that their safety is related to court records.

Good points. The picking and choosing is what seemed funny to me as well.

I think they will look stupid. Minnesota is a no -fault divorce. There was always a chance that the file would have little to no comments about why they were divorcing. In addtion, the used an arbitrator for some portion of the divorce and none of that information would be in the file.

The fact that it is boring has already been confirmed by the judge. It is M2 trying to save face from looking like a gold digger.

Madonnas husband got a very large sum including Ashcombe house. "Ashcombe House, which is currently valued at Β£20 million, and a Β£13 million payment in lieu of their London townhouse. The remainder of the money is believed to include provision for security arrangements during the periods when Ritchie has custody of the couple's children."

But they had kids.

I think someone people are getting two issues confused. It is fine to make the docs public but another thing for a major american newspaper to want to publish the information.

Would the Star Tribune have published this back when he got a divorce 10 years ago? I doubt it this is just a means to run with some gossip they believed they would get from the file and nothing more. That is the thing that should bother people.

I'm sure she got way more than $276K. If I recall correctly, that figure was something she sued for long after the divorce was final - like Prince missed a spousal support payment or something.

I always thought it was curious that they were married for almost exactly five years and then BAM! she suddenly filed for divorce. It was almost like their pre-nup had a vesting period or something.

In a marital property state like Minnesota, each divorcing spouse is entitled to half of the sum total of assets accrued during the marriage by both parties. That means that, absent a pre-nup, all monetary gains made by Prince and Manuela during the five years of their marriage would be added up and split down the middle. Considering the success of the Musicology tour, that would be a huge sum.

The question is whether they had a pre-nup, at all.

Yes, yes, yes. And based on what the judge said it sure seems the sealed records are boring. Seems to me the only reason Mani would be so intent on keeping these records sealed is because something is in there that could make her look bad (like if she got a huge settlement or she was cheating on him). If the details made Prince look bad (like drugs, cheating etc.) would she care?

It is what it is. I personally believe that Mani already revealed (on FB, briefly discussed here on the org) what she didn't want seen in the files. She has said that she wanted children... that didn't work out for them together either - so it ended. Those circumstances are disparaging, in addition to essentially being private medical information, so if thats the case, I certainly understand why she would fight to keep the records sealed.
I think the 276k was the value of the townhome or condo Mani was living in, while separated and still in MN, that P may have reneged on paying off or dug his heels in regarding the transfer of that personal property, per the final divorce decree dividing assets. I'm inclined to believe the T spilt that she also received more as a cash settlement (they were married during the very profitable Musiclogy era, and as such I could fathom income earned during that time considered martial assets, exclusive of a pre-nup).
At end of the day, the ST has to sell papers to create revenue - so they need content. When most divorce decrees are public record and you come across one that is sealed, it raises red flags - no matter what is actually in the files, harmful or not. If we can't see them, it only makes us wonder more, hence these types of discussions.

Listen to me closely as the story unfolds

Bull plenty of things going on in the real world that they can report on other than this type of trival nonsense. This is exactly what is wrong with the media. Put in content about things that are important. The divorce records were sealed because all of his net worth was listed. Who wants the world to know that information.
