Who is Funkenberry referring to?

I'm re-listening to his Prince tribute podcast from April. In it he said (when talking about events right after Prince passed): "have certain people that care for him, but at the same time it's a little bit of an act...it's turning the knife inside of me. I can't really name names, I think it's better to protect you guys from it because it would hurt you."

Who is he referring to? When I think back to that time and those closest to Prince who did media, three people come to mind: Sheila E., Van Jones and Damaris Lewis. Van was very emotional on CNN and HLN but I can't see fans really being "hurt" if they found out some of that was an act. Did fans really care much about Van Jones one way or the other? And if it was an act then he's certainly a great actor. Damaris did one interview with CNN but nothing she said was controversial, she didn't try to pass herself off as anything more than a close friend, didn't disclose personal details etc. I'm just intrigued as who he's talking about. Are there other very close to Prince who gave interviews right away that he might be referring to or is it Sheila?

He might be talking about Sheila, but Sheila had a 30 plus year friendship with him. Did this guy even meet Prince?

He made some snide remark about Sheila E and the Symbol/Butterfly shirts a month or two ago. Really bitchy.

As I'm finishing the end of this first podcast he does mention Van Jones name so I'm assuming he was not referring to him. The 20/20 show featured Londell and Kim Berry. I can't imagine he was talking about her so I'm guessing it's most likely Sheila or Londell.

--I never got the impression that Sheila E was acting. I think she was distraught and caught off guard by the whole stiuation. I think Londell is suspect. We still do not know how close he was to Prince and he literally appeared out of nowhere. I think the Dr.might have heard something about Londell to make that statement. I know he said in another podcast he had some people who wanted to film the Triubute concert got free and Londell never got back to him about it.

HAHAHA Uhhh, yes, he knew Prince, and was friends with him. He 'leaked' a lot of Prince 411 over recent years, which came directly from Prince.

Regarding the Sheila comment: He comes across as kind of bitchy and a know-it-all. I do share the sentiment of Sheila and the butterfly symbol. She seems to think she's the de facto tribute payer, and only she can do this or that, and she has the right to plaster his name and symbol etc all over the place and make some money from it. She comes across like she's the only one grieving or something. And I love Sheila, but post April 21, she's really taken it all to a new level of ....whatever it is.

Funkenberry might be feeling left out after Prince died. I don't know how close he was with others, or who has included him in anything, but I suppose anyone that was also around Prince can choose to stay friendly with whoever they wish or not. Someone's gonna get pissy somewhere, at some point. Some might have seen Funkenberry as an interloper or a hanger-on, whereas maybe he saw others that way. It's all relative, really. I mean, if he's going to call someone out, just do it. Don't go posting blind items, because the rumor mill in the purple kingdom runs 24/7 anyway. Don't fuel it.

Obviously this guy had a tight relationship with Prince but like you say who knows if that extended to other Prince associates so it is possible he feels a bit left out or bitter/hurt about certain things and uses his podcast to vent. I don't like it though when he says he won't name names because he thinks it will hurt the fans. Um, we're all adults I think we can handle it. Plus don't throw shade and spill tea if you're not prepared (or able) to tell us everything. As far as Sheila goes, seeing her plaster Prince's love symbol over everything rubs me the wrong way. There's just something about it that's kinda creepy. And imo that tattoo is 2 or 3 sizes to big.

Ok. A few things here.

- First of all, I am under the impression that Dr. Funkenberry never met Prince. If someone - anyone - can produce proof otherwise, I would appreciate it. I thought I once heard him mention that he was afraid or nervous about the prospect of meeting Prince. I'm also under the impression that the information he was given to leak or report on all these years which came from Prince - actually came from Prince's camp - meaning someone other than Prince. Am I incorrect about this? That doesn't mean Prince didn't appreciate what he was doing, if so, but I get the feeling this simply worked for Prince.

- I highly doubt Funkenberry was talking about Van Jones or Damaris. Those are the first two people I wouldn't suspect.

- I think Dr Funkenberry struggles and is basically a nice guy. I wish he would stop saying "like" so much as a teenage girl might, and be sure to pronounce his words clearly when he broadcasts. I think he is very loyal to Prince...maybe a little too much so. Sometimes it gets a little mushy or he takes sides.

But overall, I appreciate his broadcasts and greatly respect his courage and honesty when certain things need to be said.

I believe I even heard him say he didn't meet prince that night either. I'll keep an eye out for information to the contrary about this.

who knows, many people have been throwing that accusation around and everyone is trying to say they were closer to him than so and so. How would we know? And how would some of them know? the revolution was saying they were pissed that people were claiming to be close to him in a recent interview but none of the Revolution members were involved in his life in the last 2-3 decades. They wouldn't know. Prince burned a lot of bridges, almost everyone he ever came across had problems with him, Sheila said a few years ago she'd never work with him again so I think there was definitely some friction there and she did write that book. She said prince proposed to her but who knows in what context he said that in, I know I've proposed to strippers before and it was anything but serious.

Sheila held a resentment against him for decades because she was charged almost $100,000 at the end of a tour with him for things she thought were being offered for free while on the road. When she got the bill she was mad.

Last year in an interview she offered the suggestion that other musicians ask questions so they know if things are actually free.

So really she took things because she wanted them and didn't ask questions and that led her to be mad at herself and Prince.

Now, would it have been nice if Prince clarified to her that things weren't free? I don't know if he knew everything she was accepting, or maybe he did - and decided to let her learn on her own. Don't know the particulars, I just know that she held onto that anger for a long time. Of course things like that stopped mattering on April 21.

We have all grown a lot this year.

--- Did anyone read her book? Only about 20% of the book is about him. She does not trash him and I am sure she could have. She had mentioned the engagement before she wrote the book years ago and remember he was supposed to be engaged to Susannah and no one has a problem with her. She did not go into debt because of Prince it was his management company and she admitted she did not read the contract she signed. She also stopped working with him in the early 90s and went back to working with him in the early 2000's not decades. She said they decided to just be friends instead of lovers and that she needed to take that break from him for a while.

Two decades ago, she spent or got 100,000 dollars worth of crap and assumed it was free. If it were costumes and meals on the road, maybe she was right to be resentful. But if it was parties etc, than she has an awful sense of entitlement. He might have figured she was taking advantage of him.

That all sounds true. BUT - did they actually talk? Face to face and in person? Or on the phone? Or on email? A direct one-on-one communication?

I urge u to checkout his Twitter feed which will direct u to links of his different podcast. It was during the time right after Prince's death that the Doc spoke on the things I mentioned. Great stuff, actually. I think he knew him well just by his stories.

she says that she spoke to him a few months before he passes. as far as her resentments, it's par for the course, everyone in the music business gets taken at some point, and we're talking legends too. I am listening to the audio version of Springsteens book and he describes how he would have signed anything when he was broke even knowing he'd someday have to fight like hell to get out of the contracts if it meant getting somewhere. Same Idea prince sang of in Avalanche. Sheila admits she was a diva in her younger years so i could see her spending tons of money for the star treatment and just basically fucking herself. Prince could have been a better friend and warned her about it if he knew but maybe he didn't even know himself. he'd gotten taken pretty good too, does anyone remember he was reportedly broke around 89 or so? Prince had the fan base, the work ethic and resources to recover, most artists don't. Springsteen says he had a bout 20,000 to his name many several years into his recording career. It's the american way, lots of people do all the work and get fucked by the gatekeepers.

It was 3 decades ago and the debt was due to the management company making her pay for the electric at stadiums they played. Years later Prince would have problems with the same mangers owing them fees after he fired them.

Are u ppl on drugs? DrFunkenberry knew Prince well. You all should listen to his podcasts and u will find a plethora of P info. Prince paid DrFunkenberrys medical bills when he fell ill as well as his rent because he got behind as a result of his illness. After that, Prince always had a seat reserved for him whenever the Doc would attend one of his shows. Prince would ask him each time he saw him how he was doing or feeling. I qualify that a true friendship. As far as the topic goes and who the Doc was talking about, beats me.
That all sounds true. BUT - did they actually talk? Face to face and in person? Or on the phone? Or on email? A direct one-on-one communication? Are you sure about this? I have just always wondered is all.

Yes, I'm sure. I read an interview in the last couple of years (will have to go back and see which publication it was) and Prince mentioned Funkenberry and acknowledged him as he was at Paisley Park at the time. They have definitely met, talked and corresponded over the years.
