Guitar playing during 3rd Eye era

3rd Eye was supposed to be ultimate rock show something like Funkadelic meets Black Sabbath.

Rock is about epic guitar solos so did Prince deliver?

In my opinion he didnt.I have heard and seen many performances by Prince and his

3rd Eye band

and his guitar playing was ofte sloppy and unispired and he let Donna

take over on many guitar solos like I Could Never Take the place and others, and she always played the same pentatonic solo over and over again.

Princes guitar playing from 3rd Eye era is far bellow guitar pyro

he did during the 2009 Montreux concerts or 2011,2012 concerts.and i dont know why.was Prince having arthritis and had trouble playing or he lost interest in guitar after so many years focusing on guitar.

Or maybe he just couldnt play that awful Vox guitar .

Respectfully, bollocks. He was playing with textures and runs I've never heard him do before, check out the chaos and disorder video from London, one of my favourite solos of his. Agree with Donna's uninspiring playing though!

Donna Grantis was well below par, but I'm guessing that's kind of the point. Prince is hardly going to invite some guitar virtuoso like Buckethead to join his band and show him up, so he hires somebody who is just about competant enough to sound half decent, to make Prince look even better.

Harsh but true.

Yes. Google or search twitter for reviews of his U.K. Shows in 2014 and you'll see a lot of best concert I've ever been to remarks. I have video from several of these shows and I think he was playing as well as he ever did.

I couldn't disagree more.

At the London gigs with 3RDEYEGIRL in 2014, particularly Shepherds Bush, he played the best guitar I'd ever witnessed from him with plenty of 'epic' solos.

Shepherds Bush remains the greatest concert I've ever seen by Prince or any other artist. And I've seen Prince live himself about 30 times starting from 1993.

I enjoyed what P did in 3EG. It was nice to see his guitar up front for once and hear him rock out....Was it my favorite project he ever did?..No. But I still enjoyed it.

Prince, the man who prides himself on having "the best band in the world", suddenly thought "hmm I better hire a 'just competant' guitar player otherwise they'll outshine me? There is no reason for that given the guitarists he's had in the past.

Donna is a solid guitarist. In some shows it sounds like her guitar is turned down too low. When I saw them in the UK she was on fire, playing her solos with her guitar behind her head. The only bad thing that could be said about Donna is that she isn't Prince.

The thing that bugs me about these kind of threads is that you can search youtube for any member of 3EG and find videos of them playing... Anyone got a video to back up this theory?

In fairness, the official live version of "Always in my hair" - you can barely hear her guitar, but during something in the water it's another story.

I always dreamed about a rock guitar project and was excited when 3rd Eye project came out. But, after a while, I wasnt too excited about his playing. I prefer a lot more his Musicology-Lotus era, with the Fender.

The solos she played would depend on the song.

As for Ida... you can search YouTube for "Ida Prince Bass Battle" and watch her kick Prince's ass.

There's certainly video to disprove it.

That Shep Bush show was insane.

Also the best concert I've ever been to - not just of Prince, but overall.

Look up the "Something In The Water" solo from the Mohegan Sun show. Will disprove this thread in only 2 1/2 minutes.

I hope full versions of these shows see the light of day.

When 3EG came onto the scene Prince changed. The Vegas-lounge arrangements went out the window and 30 year old songs started sounding fresh. Something in the water indeed.

Could the original poster point us to a specific song that they say was played well before 3EG and played badly by 3EG?

Donna's guitar playing was a specific kind of pentatonic rock guitarring alright, it wasn't Eddie Hazel stuff but neither was it meant to be. Did Prince ever state they were supposed to be Funkadelic meets Black Sabbath or did people just take that from "black man on guitar plays a riff lifted from Iron Man"?

What everybody else said. The 3rdEyeGirl era was among my favorites because of Prince's guitar-playing.
