Prince song poll 2016-2017: Extended deadline

Overview

Needless to say, 2016 has been a tough year for Prince fans. We’ve all had to cope with the loss in our own ways. Some of us have avoided Prince’s music because it serves as too painful of a reminder of what we have lost, while some of us have enveloped ourselves in his music as it is the only thing that brings comfort.
As 2016 draws to a close, I think now is a good time to celebrate his legacy, and one way to do that is to count down what collectively serve as our favorite Prince songs.
Consequently, I have collated a list of all known Prince songs as listed at princevault.com.

How to participate

To get us warmed up, I will be making a post with a link to a random song each day for us to rate, along with its number in the spreadsheet. These ratings are informal, but a fun way to get us all ready for the main poll. I invite you to make posts with ratings for other Prince songs as you like, but please check to see if the song you are considering has not been posted first! Here’s how to formally participate:
  1. Access the master spreadsheet from https://docs.google.com/s...sp=sharing
  2. Make a copy of the spreadsheet where you can enter ratings. The link above is kept as View Only to preserve it from any unintentional edits. There are two ways to make a copy (see video in the “Helpful Links” section for a demonstration):
    1. You can make a copy as a Microsoft Excel file by following the menu items File -> Download As -> Microsoft Excel.
    2. Alternatively, you can copy the master spreadsheet as a Google Sheet by following the menu items File -> Make a Copy.
  3. In your copy of the spreadsheet, rate as many of the listed songs as you like on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 representing the most favourable rating and 0 the most unfavorable. You can get as precise as you’d like with ratings, so if you want to rate a song 9.99, feel free. Whether you vote for 5 songs or 1000 is up to you - any and all participation from Prince fans is welcome!
  4. Once complete, send your list as an attachment to Princepoll2016@gmail.com. I will notify you after I have successfully incorporated your ballot into the results spreadsheet.
  5. Periodically check for updates to the master spreadsheet, when new songs are added. See the “Spreadsheet Updates” section below for details of any updates that are made.

Some important notes

  • For songs recorded by others that have circulating versions with Prince’s vocals (e.g. “Neon Telephone”), please consider the version with Prince’s vocals.
  • For songs that have multiple versions (e.g. “U’re Gonna C Me” or “The Dance”), please assign a rating to the version you like best.
  • If you are uncertain about a song title (e.g. which version of “A Place in Heaven” you’d like to rate), check out available information at princevault. I have copied the list verbatim from these two links: http://princevault.com/in..._song_list and http://princevault.com/in...and_covers
  • The deadline for list submission is February 1, 2017. After all lists are collated, I will count down the list using the following point system:
  • Points = (Average rating – 5)*ln(number of ratings + 1)
  • Why this formula? It rewards songs with high numbers of votes, so we don’t have a situation where an obscure song with 5 ratings of a perfect 10 (say, “2045 Radical Man”) ranks higher than a song with 100 ratings with an average of 9.9.
  • Feel free to share this link with any and all Prince fans you feel would be interested in participating.
  • Thank you to princevault for being such a wonderful resource of information on all things Prince, and that all of you for making the Prince fan community such a vibrant place.

Spreadsheet Updates

If you notice that a song is missing, please make a post to the page, and I will add the song to the spreadsheet.
  • December 11, 2016: Added “Anotherlove” and “New Power Gerenation (Pt. II)”
  • December 29, 2016: Added “The Sweeter She Is” and “Climax”

Just to clarify, it's not a top 10. You can rate as many songs as you want. I am not asking for a ranked list of your favorite songs, but rather a score from 0-10 for each song you wish to rate.

I both love and hate these things. I've been scrolling through firing off numbers. I think it's going to take me a month to settle my scores, and even then I'll want to change them. Perhaps in the future, it would be better to use a set list of words instead of numbers, like 'perfect' or 'diabolical', to get more consistency across everyone's ratings.

Anyway, I'm stuck wondering what to do with Old Friends 4 Sale. I can't even listen to the released version, but it's a straight 10 for the "original".

Yeah, it'a tough to rate them all, and I feel like it will take me the whole month to be happy with my ratings as well!

For "Old Friends 4 Sale" (and any other song with multiple versions), rate your favorite. I plan on giving it a 10 for its original version as well. wink

Glad you are interested! The main spreadsheet is view only to ensure that everyone starts with the same spreadsheet. You can make a copy by clicking File: Make a Copy or if you prefer, you can download the spreadsheet as an Excel file and fill in the ratings that way, by following File: Download As: Microsoft Excel.

Let me know if that doesn't work.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking people to submit a ranked list of their favorite 10 (or any other number) songs. I'm hoping people will submit ratings of songs from a 0-10 scale for however many songs you'd like. If you want to rate 800 Prince songs and give 700 of them a perfect 10, I'm happy to count it!

As a rough rule, I'd rate the songs this way:

0: I'd love to keep a distance of several time zones between myself and this song
1: I hate this song
2: I REALLY dislike this song
3: I dislike this song
4: I kinda dislike this song
5: I'm ambivalent/have mixed feelings about this song
6: I kinda like this song
7: I like this song
8: I REALLY like this song
9: I love this song!
10: I can't live without this song!

So far, I've given 123 Prince songs a rating of a perfect 10, a further 51 a 9.5, and 78 a rating of 9.

Have downloaded and will do, but I can not rank every song as I have not heard them all. I am just using basic 1 - 10 marks anyway.

Will try and finish by new year.

All done and about 2 send. I have rated 829 songs.

.

Some of the unreleased stuff dying to hear and found more out about his output, a song called Velvet Kitty Kat and Vagina? I knew he was obsessed with sex in the early 80s, but that is bizarre.

.

Has anyone heard "Vagina", "Emotional Pump" or "We can Fuck" it will be interesting to see what marks they get lol

829 songs is amazing! I'm currently around 560 and have a lot more listening/rating to do before I'm happy.

"Velvet Kitty Cat" leaked this year. I think Questlove played "Emotional Pump" at a recent DJ set.

verrrryyy comprehensive list! Wow. I haven't heard of many of these sad I have never really gone out of my way to buy the other artists/proteges/etc he has made albums for/with. If I do I would pick up the Janelle Monae one and maybe one other, but shrug I want Prince music and Prince Lyrics...with Prince vocals along with it too nod

I will do my best to sift through the ones I do know before the deadline though.

That is nice of you, means we will get some more entries. So how does the formula work? Is it something like.

.

Hypothetically

.

Song A has 18 votes with an average of 8.5, so it's score is 3.5 (Avg - 5) x 18 = 63.0 points points and

Song B has 1 vote of 10 points , so 5 x 1 = 5.0 points

Song C has 51 votes with an average of 4.97, so -0.03 = -1.53points

Song D has 234 votes with an average of 9.68 points = 4.68 x 234 = 1095.12 points

or am I wrong?

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

You're close! The multiplier is not the number of votes, but the natural logarithm (denoted ln) of the number of votes + 1.

So song A would get a score of 3.5 x ln(18 + 1) = 3.5 x 2.9444 = 10.31 points
Song B would get a score of 5 x ln(1 + 1) = 5 x 0.6931 = 3.47 points
Song C would get a score of -0.03 x ln(51 + 1) = -0.03 x 3.9512 = -0.12 points
Song D would get a score of 4.68 x ln(234 + 1) = 4.68 x 5.4596 = 25.55 points

3: I dislike this song
4: I kinda dislike this song

6: I kinda like this song
7: I like this song
8: I REALLY like this song

So far, I've given 123 Prince songs a rating of a perfect 10, a further 51 a 9.5, and 78 a rating of 9.

My rankings go

.

10 - Stone cold classic - One of his finest and most important songs

9.5 - Exceptional

9 - Excellent -A great great song, but there is still better

8.5 - Very good/Great

8 - Good - definitely a good song

7.5 Satisfactory

7 - Average - a standard song on a good Prince album

6.5 Decent

6. Fair - There are some flaws, but still listenable

5.5 Mediocre

5 - So so, song is flawed but not so bad, still adds nothing to his cannon

4.5 Lacking

4 - Barely there - Just a song as Captain would say

3.5 Bad

3 - Really Bad, there is so much wrong with a song that scores this low

2.5 Terrible

2 - Dreadful, a real disgrace to his legacy

1.5 Don't ask

1 - For real Prince, are you fucking with us

0.5 - Complete shit, must be Boytrouble, Da da da or Mr Happy

0- Nothing can score this low, you get half a mrak for trying us with a song.

.

So mine is really that 7 is average for a Prince song and anything over is a good Prince song and anything under is a Not so good Prince song. My average for his songs is 7.56 and albums is 7.35 out of 10. (Released and studio music only - no boots or live songs like asked for in the poll.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
