The album is not doing well overall, but considering the poor tracklist (always the same songs, only one unreleased track...) just imagine how well it would have done if it was done properly : one unreleased track by disc, post-warner hits ( TMBGITW, GOLD, HOLY RIVER, MUSICOLOGY, BLACKSWEAT...).

WB lost his money on this, this failure was highly predictable. I hope these people who conceived this will be fired.

It would be nice for his legacy to have an official compilation that included post-WB tracks/"hits", but I can't imagine a set like 4ever selling any better if you removed 6 tracks on it as it's currently configured and replaced them with your choice of <4 minute edits of tracks recorded in 1994 and later. Not without a giant marketing push.

If the aim of the estate is to make money from the music they need to keep it off streaming services. So people are forced to pay their $10 up front.

Outdated...

Say that to Drake or The Weekend who's album streams are in the hundreds of millions...

100 Million streams times $0.006 = $600,000

1 Million album sales x $2 per album = $2 million.

Which option is more likely to generate the most money?

If Prince were alive and trying to get his music heard, I'd agree with you. But the main concern at the moment is the estate needing to pull in £100 million to settle the tax bill. Then we can look forward to a new album anytime Tyka wants a new pair of shoes. the family wants some extra income.

That seems a bit unfair. Tyka has been welcoming to fans and very respectful of Prince's legacy this far.

Yes, let's ignore the facts. Let's ignore that WBR only has the rights to his 1980s and 1990s albums released by them, and not even all of them (seems the post-1992 contract ones are out of bounds). let's ignore that Prince was involved in this compilation, etc.

.

Who knows what the original plans were; wouldn't be surprised if those involved "deleting" TH/TBS, Ultimate and TVBO, plus other promo activity. Wouldn't be surprised if there were negociations WRT getting access to additional tracks (e.g. TMBGITW). But all of that is now on hold, so they had to work with what they did have access to and the rights to.

.

And chances are they had to do something NOW, because there is a danger that the real mess WRT the rights to his music is just about to explode, and in such a case having product in stores is waaaaay more important than making big bucks. Because now they also have "Moonbeam Levels" in their catalogue.

^ I didn't mean it in a bad way. I was just making a point, not the shoes per se, but IMO there is a sense they have to get quite a lot out over the next 10 years.

I mean, there is an awful lot of music... if the plan was to release one album a year it'd take 30 years just to put out the remasters... a large portion of his fanbase will likely be dead.

I'm not sure there is any art in posthumous releases. The best anyone can hope for is that the songs on any given album have a story behind them and sales are at a level to bring in enough profit to keep Paisley running.

But does anyone know why Prince delivered another compilation that's essentially the same as the others? I expected the PR reissue first since he had talked about it a while ago and I think it would have outperformed P4Ever easily because of the people who have Purple Rain/Revolution fever and didn't keep up with him after 1985. I saw a P4Ever commercial on VH1 and MTV but I thought it was basic and extra cheesy with the purple gloved hands confused

I wish, I bought once copy, my guess is it will drop quickly.

Also its not #1 on our charts - It is $1 on the Heatseekers which is the consolation prize charts for albums outside the #40. A Michael Bubble album sits at #1, NZ is a lame as fuck place, with all the local acts and shit hoppers under neath it.

I would say under 100 copies have sold in the whole country.

Promoting "Moonbeam Levels" might have helped sales in the short term, but as has already been mentioned, compilations rack up numbers through a sort of slow burn by appealing to casual fans.

Glad you're at least making some sense in Prince's sales since his death.

.

In fact Prince sold in the US 2.05 millions albums / 2.6 with added streaming.

06 - 652,000 - THE VERY BEST OF - Prince ( 2,740,000 )
13 - 478,000 - PURPLE RAIN - Prince & the Revolution ( 3,550,000 )
70 - 160,000 - 1999 - Prince ( 950,000 )
92 - 137,000 - ULTIMATE - Prince ( 416,000 )
106 - 128,000 - THE HITS/B-SIDES- Prince ( 829,000 )

191 - 78.000 Prince.

Doesn't this make him either the 2nd or 3rd highestin album sales for the year behind Adele and possibly Drake (though a lot of his chart success was based on streaming)?

Yet looking at our charts in NZ, some of his back catalogue sold after his death.

.

In the week of May 2 (Ending so sales April 26 - May 2), Ultimate, The Very Best of, The Hits/Bsides and Purple Rain re entered the charts. All dropped out after 2 weeks, but the Hits/Bsides and Ultimate lingered to July. The Hits was #1 through June and sold some 15,000 copies meaning it went from unclassified to Platinum and the Ultimate album went Gold.

.

Given the release of the back catalogue by Warners here, I would guess that close to 30,000 Prince albums have sold in NZ since April 22 (Our time when the news of his death broke, NZ is between 19/21 hours ahead of Pacific time). The Hits/Bsides at least 10,000 (As Gold is 7.5k and 15k is Platinum, an unclassified album could have 7,000 sales already) and Ultimate moved at least 5,000 copies. I would guess the VBOP is also 5k copies and Purple Rain at least 2 or 3k.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Exactly. They should have treated this song like a "new Prince single".I remember last year,Michael Jackson's old song from the vaults, "Love Never Felt So Good", was released and it got lots of promotion and hype. There is no reason why Prince too can't have a big posthumous hit.

Posthumous stuff just doesn't sell that well. Doesn't matter which artist it may be. Time to start catering to the real fans with lots of Deluxe unreleased box sets and concert DVD's.

Sure, release basic versions for casuals too. How should Purple Rain Deluxe be released? See BAD25. Various versions to cater for differing levels of interest.

Prince has nothing to do with that.

It seems that 4ever gets a worldwide promotion, but the sales are very low...Not a good sign for the other projects.

The reason is very simple: When Prince died, people went out and bought the other compilations amounting to a couple of million in sales. Now, a few months later WB go and release another compilation containing the same songs that those same folk only recently bought.

It is an obvious mistake that had poor sales written all over it from the get go. They should have either released the PR deluxe before xmas or, at the very least, released a compilation of album songs that never got released as singles during the WB years - A compilation that would compliment the previous greatest hits as opposed to a compilation that mimicked them.

Hopefully, someone, somewhere is preparing a Best Of for post WB material for all those millions who bought the Hits/Ultimate after he died. Sell it at a bargain price and hopefully the masses will get to hear a wealth of music they never knew existed.

As for all the unreleased material in the vault, Im not sure much of that will crossover to the masses and will only generate fan interest. Hence the need to package it properly and sell it for top dollar.

In the first 3 weeks, it sold 33.700 ex in the US. Not so bad.

In the UK, in the first 2 weeks it sold about 27.000 ex too. And the first figure for the 3rd indicates another 15.000 copies sold.
