When U Saw P's Performance on American Bandstand?

with Dick Clark singing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" way back in the day. What did you think of his dancing on that song? His dancing really evolved over the next few years!

I saw this show years later in like 2000, i think I was just about to turn 21 ... and that was the start .....

Of my long Prince journey .......of learning, life, love and wisdom....... I know this wrong to say

But because I miss him so much

I think sometimes why did I have to get so deep in2 him....... almost wish that faithful day

I wouldn't have seen that show.... cause " He Is So Missed " But I know God have/had a great Plan for why I did.... and was beautiful times within those year, so try and view things in this light ....

honeybabe + sweet

Smiling Makes Joy Come Alive........and Joy can never die .........yes

I was 15 and I wasn't very deep about analyzing anything AB, the bottom line, it had a good beat and I could dance to it. wink He was cute as hell and he could move in those heels and I liked the music, the sound of his voice, he was radical and different and I was glad my grandmother was late coming in from work so I could at least watch him perform, she just happened to show up around the interview and I turned it off as quick as possible.

I was 12 then so us "tweens" didn't think much of his dancing one way or the other. But like fashion/fads we look back now and laugh only because we see the evolution and have something to compare it to. But when you're living in those times you don't pay it much mind. But yeah, I remember that show airing on a Saturday and man, that Monday when we returned to school everybody was talking about it. My 7th grade teacher Ms. Harris was just a real "meanie"! She couldn't sssssstand!!! Prince for some odd reason. I will never forget her words, Did you see that "clown" blah, blah, blah. So, I'm thinking she must not like him because he seemed nervous and stalled and stumbled over his words. But nooooo disbelief that wasn't it. She went on to say, "And he had the nerve to say he plays so and so instruments (however many instruments P claimed to have played). Nobody in this world plays that many instruments, yada, yada, yada. He's a liar...on and on. Yeah, she was SUPER pissed and had made up her mind on THAT day that she did NOT like the artist, Prince. Isn't that crazy? People are somethin' else.

Some white folks thought that, too. wave

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i thought him and his crew looked like weirdos...me and my family were cracking jokes at his awkward and effeminate demeanor...we thought maybe Little Richard and Farrah Fawcett made a baby...and didnt Andre Cymone have on some clear plastic pants?...looked like they were made from those old school plastic couch covers...i was embarrassed for them...i liked I Wanna Be Your Lover, but after seeing that, i avoided/ignored Prince until i heard the song 1999...but while watching American Bandstand that day, i NEVER would have imagined Prince becoming the icon he became...and that i would end as one of his most loyal fans

There is an article (I would have to hunt for it) where I think Andre' stated that Prince was furious that he "froze" up after being asked by Dick Clark how many instruments did he play...to which P responded by holding up 4 fingers. After that incident P swore he would never be parylized by stage fright again.

.

Watch the video again. When Clark asks him how many instruments he plays, P hesitates and then says "a thousand". The four fingers were held up in reference to his age. Owen Husney had dropped a couple of years off P's age at the time of the WB signing, and I don't think P liked having to lie about it in public....so four fingers, making him 15!

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.
