The song "Seven" has a lot of Christian meaning to it relating to the Book of Revelation. Not sure if there is any Scripture quoted though, but it does have Biblical meaning.

If you look at the lyrics in the sleeve, hold them up to a mirror. There are backwards words on there referring to Revelations.

3121 itself is a scripture reference to Psalms. "Praise the LORD, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack."

"Beautiful Loved & Blessed" references "a piece of clay", and "potter's hand". Isaiah, Jeremiah, Romans, Revelations and more reference God as the potter, and people as the clay.

"Fury" references a woman scorned. Proverbs 21:9 (NLT) "It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home." KJV says, "It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.". It's where the scorned woman references comes from, partly.

"Pearls B4 The Swine" is from Matthew 7:6, "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."

"Muse 2 The Pharoah" references Proverbs 31:10. "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."

It also references "Dem devil come dressed as light", which is 2 Corinthians 11:14 "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." Also Matthew 7:15 says, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.".

God is also references like a thief in the night when referring to the rapture. That phrase is also in "Muse".

"The Work" references "But this is the work we must do 4 Revelation 2 come 2 pass", just a mention of the prophecies in the book.

"Everywhere" mentioned the land of "milk and honey", which is where the Jews eventually ended up after the Exodus.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

It's interesting to see Prince referenced comic books so much!

.

It's very sad indeed that people are still using ancient human constructs to manipulate and control one another.

.

The chorus to Love:

Like a bird flying over the hilltops
Love is like the sky you know it never stops
From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks
Love is whatever, whatever, you want it to be

Quoting Jesus in Luke 6:45:
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

I've always loved that verse and was happy to find it in the song. We had a very funny pastor once who said that often people would tell him that they had done/thought/said something and ask "Does that make me a bad person?"

His stock answer was, "No, that doesn't make you a bad person... It just reveals that you're a bad person.". lol

When I finished my last post, the "Welcome to the org" quote was from New Power Generation:

If we only want to love one another
Then tell me now who's the fool

It's not overt, but considering the entire theme of Graffiti Bridge (and the fact that Prince made lots of Biblical allusions that weren't quite quotes), I think it's safe to reference this passage, also Jesus speaking, from Matthew 5:43-48:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

So all of the Christians who hate others? They're doing it wrong. ;-)

I think I'll go listen to Graffiti Bridge now. That may generate a few more!

One more thing that's more an allusion than a quote... The intros to many of the songs on the album Come, which I believe were broken apart from a piece called "Poem", are written in the same style as the poetry from the Biblical book Song of Solomon/Song of Songs/Canticle of Canticles (depending on the translation).

Nothing he says is an actual verse, but the style was so similar that I actually double-checked the first time I heard the album. It's no coincidence.

You don't know that. That is your conjecture, at best. Prince was a poet, so to say his lyrics or a poem is similar to another style is obvious. He was as original as he was influenced by others. But to say he wrote a poem in the style of Song of Solomon is a stretch.

In "Return of the Bump Squad" when Sonny T opens the good book, he is reading from Numbers 21:5, "they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, 'Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?,'" which is also stated in a similar manner in Exodus 14:11. Also, "The Exodus Has Begun" is an allusion to the the fleeing of the Jews from Egypt. Additionally, "You Will Be Moved" has some biblical allusions as well. Of course both "Annie Christian" and "Anna Stesia" are both biblical allusions with Annie Christian being a personification of Satan and Anna Stesia being a personfication of the love or angel of Christ.

Lord, I can't believe that none of us thought of "And God created woman". The whole song is scripture.

In a deep sleep I fell
And the music starts to swell
One of my ribs He took and it shall be
Bone of my bones (bone of my bones)
And God created woman
And we were naked and did not care
There's a time to take and a time to share
to in love, all around and all aware
Flesh of my flesh (flesh of my flesh)
And God created woman

Temptation sweet and so much (sweet and so much)
Surely die if neither one of us shall ye touch (shall ye touch)
Then again we could die from the rush (rush)
Heart of my heart (heart of my heart)
And God created woman (woman)

Woman
My-my-my-my-my-my woman

In my darkest hour I find
Many serpents who have lied (lied)
Given half the chance still I'd run to your side (run to your side)
Love of my love (love of my love)
And God created woman (woman)

And if I never see you again
It's alright for I am guilty of no sin
They can have you, I'll have your love in the end
Soul of my soul (soul of my soul)
And God created woman

Flesh of my flesh
(God created woman) (soul)
(God created, God created woman)
(God created, God created woman)
(God created woman)

so..in the Light of all this..

Would it be fair to say

Prince rewrote/reinterpreted Christian Scriptures ?

I mean..... it doesn't really directly reference a specific scripture. It's more of just one of Prince's spiritual songs in general. "Anna Stesia" is in the same vein, IMO.

I think Prince thought of "Purple Rain" as a gospel song, especially what he said about Jesus and everlasting life before he sang "Purple Rain" during the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 concert at Paisley Park. He associated purple with Heaven and a new beginning.
