Something is terribly wrrong in the world when the ancient Stones (who mostly spent their first 15 years living like they wouldn't reach 40) are still around to perform Prince music and he isn't.

Pretty condescending (and presumptuous), especially considering that you've provided no evidence that Keith's opinion of Prince has ever changed. But I forgive you. It's what Prince would want. wink

"Little Red Corvette" --disappointing and unoriginal choice. No wonder Keith never bought into Prince entirely. He obviously knew very little of his music.

Yes, I know he complimented his guitar playing and called him unique posthumously. But really is that much of a complement for someone as immensely talented and multi-faceted as Prince? It doesn't balance out all the crap he said about him throughout the years (as late as when he wrote his autobiography).

YOu have to understand first that i love the Rolling Stones...They might be in my top ten of rock bands so this is not bias talking...

ANy how,

Years ago after Prince was booed (and called various offensive names) as their opening act and Prince was reportedly crying and didn't want to come back on stage, Keith stated that Prince should not have named himself Prince (little did he know) if he wasn't going to act in a princely way and that he shouldn't try to compete with the stones. Years later, he tried to associate Prince with false pop stars and said he was like the equivalent of the Monkees. He did acknowledge that Prince did a good job at the Rock N roll Hall of Fame playing guitar, but then later called him an overrated midget in his autobiograpy ( I believe a few years later).

Apparently, both Mick and Ron Wood liked Prince. But I do have to take exception to the way in which MIck tried to get Prince to return to the stage. He basically told him that being booed was part of the territory and that they had been booed several times themselves. I am sure (like Prince) they were called "fags" as well at one time or the other...long haired rock musicans used to get that a lot. But Mick and the boys were never called the N=word while on stage. Maybe, Prince had a reason to be pretty upset.

I love the Stones but as much as they connect with music that has roots in the African American experience and sexy as they think black women are, I am not sure they can ever claim to understand what Prince was going through. I mean the band that wrote Brown Sugar (and included lines about house slaves being molested)...maybe aren't ultra sensitive about certain things.

Do we know if Prince was too receptive to Keith's compliment? (and can you blame him if he wasn't--If he knew that Keith had equated him with the MOnkees, he might have thought 'screw that guy') . Keith's autobiography came out in 2010 and in it he called Prince an "Overrated Midget". That being said, he badmouthed about a dozen different musicians in that book, and I admit that I do not know the context of the comment. (What context however makes it okay to call the man a midget and overrated?)

I'm going to weigh in on what I've read above as a huge fan of both the Stones and Prince (along with Bowie, they're my favourite acts):

Ron Wood has played with Prince and I believe there was friendship there.

Mick has always held Prince in esteem - after Robert Christgau reviewed Dirty Mind by saying "Mick Jagger should fold up his penis and go home," Mick didn't lash out at his competition in a threatened manner, he invited Prince on tour, giving him huge exposure to a new (if unappreciative, homophobic and racist) new audience - this was before Prince broke the colour barrier on MTV. When the Stones did that for Stevie Wonder, a few months later he was an international superstar (no, I'm not saying they were entirely responsible, but I bet it helped).

Put yourself in Mick's shoes: you've just hired somebody, who quits on day one because they can't take the pressure. You are the biggest rock star in the world, you really don't need the guy for anything, but you spend your precious time between coke lines and conducting Stones business convincing the guy to play, because otherwise it will look bad for everybody, most especially Prince, who has the most to lose by not going on, and it will let those assholes in the crowd win. And yes, Mick had been called a "fag" (by John Lennon during a recorded interview, no less). And perhaps no racial epithets had been hurled the Stones' way, but they'd had guns pointed at their stage, and a bomb blow up one of their equipment trucks. They'd survived riot after riot and a Hell's Angels fatwa. Maybe getting over himself when opening for the Stones helped shape Prince into the dude who took on record companies and rocked the Superbowl - basically the same audience demographic who once booed him - in giant heels during a rainstorm. Should Mick have come out onstage and lectured the crowd? Yeah, that would have helped them accept Prince.

Later, Mick, at a Prince afterparty, joked to someone, "I knew her when..." This was par for the course in the Stones camp: Keith and Ron have been calling Mick "Brenda" for decades. Mick was also inspired by The Black Album when making Voodoo Lounge.

Keith has made some burns, but offered condolences after Prince's death. I've never read him calling Prince a midget, and I've read Life more than once - maybe it's in there. To be fair, Keith has burned almost every major rock act to come out since the Rolling Stones. Mick has always had more contemporary taste than Keith. Keith has burned his idol, Chuck Berry. And, more than anybody, Keith has slagged off Mick Jagger in public more times than I can count.

My point: Prince fans should get over this perceived Prince/Stones beef. Prince obviously liked the Stones, enough to jam with them, enough to cover them.

As for Little Red Corvette being too obvious a choice, the Stones are playing to stadium crowds - a lot of people in attendance won't even know deep-cut Stones and nod off during Monkey Man. What are they supposed to play, In a Large Room with No Light? Wally? Clocking the Jizz?

Valid Points all the way around. I understand what Mick was saying and I don't think he meant any harm..(and you are right --he was well intentioned and might have actually done Prince some good). I just think he never considered the racial element of what Prince was facing. I do not think Mick would have been well advised to lecture the audience however....not saying that. But I hear ya, Mick was the good guy here.

Keith can be a jerk though. You have to admit. Joking is one thing. Telling everyone in the world that MIck has a small penis (in the same book) is another thing. Mick must be pretty forgiving. I say this about Keith even though I have liked him in interviews and I imagine MIck can be a divo sometimes. People are complicated.

As for Little Red Corvette being chosen, I get what you are saying about arenas. But its the Stones, their fans can listen to one three-minute obscure (or less famous) Prince song especially if the Stones speak of it fondly prior to performing it. If they do nod off during the awesome "MOnkey Man", then they wouldn't stay awake during Little Red Corvette. Its not a tribute to Prince to cover a overplayed Prince song. I say--don't bother. It comes off obligatory rather than sincere.

Any more of a cliche than Prince covering Honky Tonk Woman? Doing LRC instead of Purple Rain is no different to doing Honky Tonk instead of Satisfaction. What would be the point of either them covering something only the hardcore fans of the other would know?

All great points. Just listening to "The Ride" and wondering if even that might be more fitting, but don't know if they would be up to the blistering guitar solos in it. Apologies to Stones fans.
