Albert Magnoli still saying Prince wrote 100 songs for Purple Rain

There was a Purple Rain screening the other night & Albert Mangnoli
Still claims Prince wrote 100 songs for the movie.
He has said this over & over again..
If this is true, I want that released right away.
That would be the holy grail of A Prince release.
he was at the height of his musical powers.
Do people here think this is really true or not?

If he really was as 'prolific' as a lot of people have said, I could easily see him pumping out a song every day or two during production of the movie. It is possible under those circumstances. Remember, he was writing for The Time, Apollonia 6 (Vanity 6), and the Revolution AT THE SAME TIME. Yeah, he probably did.

He wrote them during the time they were filming or just before. Meaning, he was always writing, so i can't see him writing just for the film. I think some songs just fit the mold of what they were doing. Does The Vault or DMSR cover that many tunes in 1982 and 1983? I've not dug my out lately to see.

I saw him say it years ago in an interview and it seemed truthful to me. But as someone else said here, I believe he had most of them written already.

He also said that he has cassettes of the songs last night.

And the 100 songs previewed were not specific to the movie plot which is why they were not used.

He said that many times they would tell Prince what type of song was needed for certain scenes and a day later he would call and say "here it is"

Apollonia said she too has a cassette of unreleased music

Not really. If he wrote something and didn't release it, he owns it. If WB released it via his order (like a single, or an album), then they owned it.

It's why Crystal Ball was out on its own. He owned those songs because most were previously unreleased by WB. That includes remixes, and re-records.

Sigh... Gotta love people just posting without looking at the facts.

.

FACT: Magnoli claims this happened before the August 3 concert.

.

FACT: There isn't a single studio recording known of a PR track prior to the August 3 concert. Well, except for a barely recognisable demo of Baby I'm A Star.

.

FACT: Prince did not have 100 outtakes at that time. (Wanna claim he did? Fine, look through The Vault etc. and present a list.)

This is disputed by Alan Leeds, and looking at what is usually present on other artists' deluxe editions I'd also guess that works made while under contract with WBR would be subject to their approval. Prince did a lot of shady stuff in 1998-2001 WRT some Warner-era material and stopped doing that suddenly, suggesting that at a certain point Warners were getting fed up with him and told him to cease releasing material they owned.

.

And sorry, but a remix doesn't make a song suddenly brand-new. Matter of fact, artists are even restricted from re-recording their own songs for X years after a contract ends to avoid situations where they'd release a "greatest hits" with re-recordings that would devalue the material owned by their previous record company.

I tend to think it's a bit of an exaggeration but I wouldn't dismiss it outright. Springsteen allegedly recorded somewhere in the region of 80 songs for Born In The USA...so I'd use that as context to at least allow for the possibility the claim is true.

This is old news? Magnoli has said this previously. I believe in one of the Prince documentaries and IIRC it's mentioned in "Possessed".

Purple Rain, The Time, Vanity - that's 30 songs.

I don't believe Prince wrote 100 songs and every single one of them was written with the intention of inclusion in Purple Rain.

It's not hard to believe that by the time Prince was compiling the tracklist for Purple Rain he had a bank of 100 songs that could have been used.

I don't think it's beyond Prince to have presented outtakes from the past few albums to Magnoli as songs he'd "written for Purple Rain".

100 songs is just like saying "a ton of songs" - He had a big stock of unreleased songs by that point already and was recording a lot by 1982/3, for his own projects and others. It's not a comment I take literally, end of story as far as I'm concerned.

Could easily be true, Prince is known for recording multiple songs in a single day, he could have easily popped out 100 of them specifically for purple rain, doesn't mean he did, just means he could have.

I wonder if there's an alternate track to Purple Rain just in case Journey decided it was too similiar to "Faithfully". My guess is yes.

Yet nobody's ever managed to compile such a list. Those early years are well-documented, so why don't people stop talkign about hypotheticals and look at the evidence?

It's probably a figure of speech,
and even if Prince did, we know by now that not everything from the Vault
stands the test of time. Far from it.

From a fan/completist point of view, listening to a sketch is always interesting.
But it's not necessarily a good song.

Bart I have always respected your opinions on here. You always seem to know exactly what your are talking about. You know your prince stuff!!!

With that said....What do you think is Prince's best unreleased stuff? And what is your favorite Prince Era?
