I'd love to go at some point but I'm in the UK and would (probably) be going alone - so I have to both save up and summon all my courage (I've never flown alone and certainly never such a distance)!

Dibblekins, don't be afraid to travel overseas alone. It's one of the most exciting, empowering and liberating experiences you could ever have. The first time I ever traveled outside of the US, I did it alone and I lived there for a year (Taiwan). In this case, you'll find purple fams everywhere to welcome you. I understand having to save up but don't worry about being alone. We're all there for you. That's one decision you won't regret.

I agree. I'm travelling alone too from the East Coast. No worries.

Does anyone in MS know what the weather is usually like in Minneapolis in October? I'm travelling on Oct 12th for the 13th visit in the morning. I don't see this advertised much so it could be many people are unaware.

Just saw this. I have no idea who Kirk Miller is, but he sure won't be there....

.

WHY I WILL NEVER VISIT PRINCE’S PAISLEY PARK

The enigmatic singer craved privacy. Let’s respect that.

BY KIRK MILLER

30 AUGUST 2016

The private home and studio used by Prince is going public.

Don’t expect to see me in line.

It's not for lack of curiosity: opened in 1985, the 65,000-square-foot Paisley Park, located in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, served as the creative nexus for the “Purple Rain” singer. He recorded there, rehearsed there, hosted private parties there ... He had the entire place wired for sound, so he could jam out any moment.

He lived there. Seriously, he lived in his studio. And, tragically, died there, on April 21, from an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl in April.

According to a press release, Paisley Park will open on...aily tours, with a chance to see Prince’s personal archive, “including iconic concert wardrobe, awards, musical instruments, artwork, rare music and video recordings, concert memorabilia, automobiles and motorcycles.”

In honor of the Purple One’s 1993 underappreciated “Seven,” let’s count the seven ways this is a terrible idea.

He was a private man
You know why there’s an air of mystery around Paisley Park? Because Prince didn’t hand out invites to just anybody. This was a man who sued former employees to protect his privacy. He hid hundreds of songs from his record label (which he also sued). He went after YouTube and other sites for posting his music and TV appearances.

Even Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson, who announced the new tours, acknowledged “only a few hundred people have had the rare opportunity to tour the estate in his lifetime.” Kevin Smith once told a great, bizarre storyabout touring the estate in 1999 for a planned documentary of the singer that paints Prince as kind of a Howard Hughes recluse figure. Oh, and that release? Shelved.

He had no will
Nelson can claim that opening Paisley Park was something “that Prince always wanted to do,” but there’s literally no proof of this. Also, given the estimated $300 million up for grabs in the estate ... let’s not trust anyone’s motives right now.

It’s going to be managed by the company that oversees Elvis Presley’s Graceland
So, you know, classy.

It’s a ripoff
Tickets are $38.50 and go up to over $100 for a “VIP experience.” For a 70-minute tour.

There’s an ongoing criminal investigation
The man died at Paisley Park — which, again, was his home. Can we wait until the investigation is finished?

Prince works better as a mystery
The man was inscrutable. Occasionally offputting, it was also part of his charm. Here’s an obit that sums up Prince’s mysterious appeal nicely: “Prince was many things at once yet ultimately remained unknowable and inscrutable — a blank space upon which fans projected their own sense of who they wished him to be. Prince was, in many ways, ill-suited to global celebrity. If the face he presented to the world was debauched with a vengeance, in private the singer was soft-spoken and intensely shy. Indeed, for much of his career he lived a hermit existence, hidden his Paisley Park recording facility in his home town of Minneapolis ...”

He really, really didn't want people getting into his vault
Prince’s legendary vault of unreleased songs was “drilled open” a mere week after his death. Does owning a literal vault sound like a man who liked to share his life?

Side note: There are now plans to release numerous albums from this vaulted archive, which begs the question: name one good posthumous album you still enjoy (seriously doubting you still have Michael Jackson’s Xscape in your playlist).

For once, let's let sleeping gods lie.

This guy, whoever he is, aside from his appalling use of punctuation, is another self-inflated person who needs to spew their grump on the world, because they insist their point of view is correct compared to everyone else's.

He clearly wasn't paying attention though. Prince has said in interview (possibly multiple) when asked what will happen to the music in the vault. He stated that's for someone else to decide, I won't be here - obviously this is paraphrasing but you get the idea. Never have I read or heard that he intended NOTHING to happen. As if everything in it should essentially spontaneously combust rather than see the light of day.

I don't know what crawled into this guys cereal box and died but he needs to chill the eff out:

-The vault was drilled open likely in search of the WILL they were desperately hoping to try to locate.

-He is literally the first person I have heard from that does NOT want to hear the music in the vault. hmm wacky

--> Without releasing the material in the vault or opening Paisley Park, this guy doesn't propose any alternate ways to obtain the funds required to secure Paisley Park; to preserve Prince's legacy: to me that of utmost importance, and yet he doesn't make any suggestions in lieu of what he's calling such a 'terrible plan'.

-This is Prince we are referring to here.

.

He's music, his creative imprint is in a level on his own. Comparing the possible future releases to previous posthumous releases...is unfathomable, and wrong (and kind of unfair to those others who've passed).

Sounds like a non-fan/non-fam bandwagoner who think they know, to me. That or he just threw a blurb together to get hits on his blog/website...who knows. shrug

You know...I could feel the EXACT way too, Ingela. P meant a lot to all of us. I didn't even realize the depth of his influence until he was gone. My solace is his purple crew (Sheila E, Revolution, The Time, Fdeluxe, Mazarati, V6 (A6), the newer proteges, etc.). They STILL want our support, and I'm willing to give it to them. Besides that, the Org has been THE ONLY group of people I can grieve with. We can make something of our own that can work with the administrators of PP. The possibilities are endless! There's a reason for all that has transpired thus far this year. I'm willing to see the PURPOSE through, if not for our healing, than maybe for others.

Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

"Prince didn't hand out invites to just anybody". Really? I can understand thinking it's too soon to open PP to the public but to suggest only special people got inside when he was alive is absurd.

Whoever wrote that article is a low IQ individual.

.
Prince was not a recluse. He threw parties at Paisley Park often and invited the public. He had hundreds of fans visit PP for the Celebrations. He threw many house parties in LA and invited all kinds of friends, celebs, etc. He went out on the town after man/most of his concerts to clubs (in public) to hang out, etc.

.

Yes he was somewhat shy in certain situations, but that is way exaggerated by this moron and many others.

.

He would be fine with tours of PP. It sounds like they aren't going into his personal living quarters, which is good but every place else was accessible by employees and artists and it wasn't a big personal space.

Exactly. Prince was private when it came to his personal life but that's about it. I think the better argument is its too soon and wondering if they're actually ready for this. I mean they basically have a month to get PP ready and that includes building out more parking, merchandising and food options. There is a lot to do in a short amount of time.

I think he's just a longtime, hardcore fan. I recognized the name as one connected to Prince-related pics and stuff on FB and a couple of VERY hardcore fans (and who even worked for Prince) have reposted stuff this Kirk guy has posted so he's been around awhile and is known. Guess he's just giving his opinion.

I wish there was at least a brief description of some of those positions. I can make a fairly good guess as to what the listed positions entail, but especially for 'catalogue associate' and 'merchandise associate' I have some questions...mainly the catalogue associate one.

Well, opening Paisley Park is indeed a controversial subject. On one hand, I feel this will be wonderful for the fans to pay their respects to a Legend, and it will help to keep PP in existence with the money generated. It cost a lot of bills to keep a 65K SF facility going! Not to mention taxes and other expenses; so with that, it is a blessing that they were able to save PP.

.

But on the other hand, like the writer said; Prince was a very private man, but I know he loved his fans (friends), and he would want nothing more than to see it bring happiness to all of us, although there will be many tears as well. Prince's living quarters will not be a part of the tour, for obvious reasons, and most of Prince's posessions will not be out for public display, so I don't really feel it will be any invasion of his privacy.

.

I have to say, I don't agree that Prince was a "recluse". Music was his life. He was an artist, always at work. He produced, created and performed a lot of beautiful music at PP. He was constantly collaborating with other artists and opened his home/studio/PP to others. Also, Prince was not "shy". I get tired of reading this, really!! He was very deep and intellectual and perhaps "reserved" at times, but that doen't make him shy. No one can get on a stage and perform like he did being "shy". He loved music and he loved performing and being on stage. Okay....back to the subject.

.

I've been to Graceland -- it's beautiful. You are just allowed to see certain areas of the home, and that is how Paisley Park will be. I think it will be a beautiful thing. My only concern is how they are going to manage the traffic going into PP, so I hope they have a really good plan in place. Not to mention the "media attention" it will bring. I hope to visit PP, one day.

Thank goodness he won't be attending, we don't want nor need his kind there. lol

That or he just threw a blurb together to get hits on his blog/website...who knows. shrug

.

You tell it! I love those clips of Prince....I miss him so!! sad

Yeah I am glad people are going to tours as I want to hear some stories.

I completely agree. He was not shy. Being extremely focused and dedicated to his gift, around the clock at times, could make someone seem reclusive by default, but I definitey don't think he's a recluse. Pretty sure he's even negated this when being asked on a number of occassions.

Oooh good luck to anyone applying. I definitely think some of the key positions, tour guides etc should be fans. I'd hate to think of people being shown around by someone with no passion for the guy.

From what I have observed, there are a LOT of us going solo! And it seems there are tons of events to join in with fellow fams, and/or fellow individuals... smile Hope you don't let something like travelling alone stop you if you are wanting to go. You could always put a call out in the fan gathering thread like others have about fans from certain regions. Don't let 'If Onlys' stand in your way. biggrin

Everyone is sick of me talking about him too; my bestie does try to be interested in the convo, though because she knows he means so much. I think if it weren't for the fact that we're planning a trip to Europe in April/May 2017...she would even join me BUT she is saving up for that (as I should also be razz cool ). Plus to be honest, I think unless you DO have another Prince Fam in your life to go with...I wouldn't want to have a non-fam go and maybe...not be interested in some things so inadvertantly deflate the energy a bit, ya know? For me, going by myself ...feels right. And linking up get togethers with other fams while there...is going to really make this trip even more special. nod

The application goes to Memphis, TN. Evidentally they are going to be conducting the selection process and scheduling interviews from TN.
