So I was wanting to ask the same thing a couple weeks back. I love a version of LRC, but coudnt figure out where it came from. It's all guitar, I believe (and drums). Starts out with a long guitar wail, like 4 or 5 times. It's 6:15 long and when he says Trojens it sounds kinda slurred or almost like he says "tronee instead of trojens". Then he says "you wanna sing". He lets the audience sing the "place where your horses run free" and "makes it alright". Then says baby "huh?" He does the "slow down, slow down" part like others were saying. I absolutely love this version. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE IT WAS PERFORMED???? I've seen some versions that are close, but not exactly the one I have. I have no video, only audio.

[Edited 8/24/16 14:42pm]

i think that was the coachella performance, or it may have been the montreaux, i have it on my mp3. the slowed down version where he calls with "got to slow down" and they reply with that.

Maybe it's Coachella because I have Montreaux full show and it's not that one. The one I have is all guitar and drums. Montreaux has a few notes of piano, etc. The one I have is straight guitar. They do yell slow down at the end, but for a lot longer than the Monreaux one. (Just listened to the Montreaux version now). I wish I could get my hands on the Coachella concert. Have a few songs from it, but not the whole thing. What I've seen of it is magical! Something in the air that night I think. nod

If he's doing the slow down part then it's not Coachella. I have it. If I can remember where I got it I'll org you.

At Coachella 2008, he doesn't really slow it down, but there is a solo. I think since then he's been taking longer solos in LRC.

So far, but there are so many I'm sure I'll find some others.

Well of course. That was utterly brilliant.
Not sure if Denise would have liked to be remembered as Prince's strongest sexual obsession...
But he sung it in a way that was more a praise to the magic of the woman than something trivial.

From the perspective of one of the female fans I will say, there was rarely anything trivial about Prince's desire. In fact, I'm pretty sure he just didn't do trivial at all smile

ya, and he opened it with a blistering solo, slowed the tempo way down, cut out a lot of the half notes made it as close as he could to a ballad. Also, He rarely took the solo in the earlier versions, he let dez, wendy, miko have it, this time he was playing it and playing it well. The solos, even Dez', live, were sometimes sloppy as hell, sometimes, so sloppy, i wondered if dez was drunk or something. Wendy was limited when she was with Prince, what was she, 19? Still, she wasn't bad she just wasn't on Prince's, dez' or miko's level. As i've said before, i think the third eye girl, whatever her name is, nailed it better than anyone other than dez on the recording. It's a difficult solo because it was spliced together from two seperate solos so there are some changes in it that are, well, i should say, as a pianist, are really difficult and from the sound of these other musicians, it's hard for them too. I've been playing LRC for many years, i don't think I've ever gotten the solo perfect in a performance.

The "Slow Down" from Montreux would have been the stuff of legend, if he just sticked to that one time.

But then he repeated the gimmick over and over through the years, and kinda killed it.
I mean, I've seen some videos where he goes on for minutes.
Too much emphasis about not much, if you ask me.

It's like those never-ending versions of "Purple Rain" circa 2010, with the sudden stops.
By the 15th time, even the most hardcore fan goes "Man, finish it already!"

But we aren't talking about all the times that came after that. We are talking about Montreux '09 performance that was just STELLAR and is legendary.

Y'know, I never do. If he wants to do it one more time because he's having such fun, I'm pretty much delighted...I really love hearing him so into it he can't stop himself just yet...

nod i agree. It's whatever he felt in the moment. As for him doing Montreux version of LRC after that...to me it just seems like the evolution of that song overtime, and that that was the version he was feeling at the time. Same with PR, he sang that a different way over time too, the emphasis on which lyrics changes... It would seem strange to expect the original versions after all that time. He would need to change things up for himself too...so not to be bored playing the same song the same way 25+ years later. Never really thought people would be so chafed about it. shrug

I love the version from Sydney 21st Feb this year. There's a bit were he says 'look at the dress, you know you can't breath. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying...you can't breath!' Makes me smile every time.

Mind would have to be Coahella 2008. I love the bluesy/jazzy guitar solo. Eat your heart out John Mayer. cool

I like the Montreux 2009 version better. And I also like the recorded version on 1999.

He did one in more recent years, where he broke it down (which I'm not always a fan of with his songs), and changed "Slow down!". It worked really well. But I like it on the 1999 tour, too.

I dug the little piano-based take in the SOTT movie.

May 14th? 2011. It was one of the last performances at the Forum. He finally broke out the guitar during the song (the first time during his run there). It was amazing. Funkenberry tweeted that it was the best performance of LRC ever. Sure, it might have been hyperbole in the moment, but it couldn't have been too far off.

Yes, but that's precisley the reason why it infuriates me : it's as short as "Cosmic Day".
I mean talk about coitus interruptus...

For that very reason, I ditch it in angry protest. biggrin
But of course it's the best.

For a brief moment, I see Christopher Tracy. The way he smiled. neutral
That's a much different "Prince on the piano" compared to the 1999 and the PR tour.
Very human, a quick nod to my early fans, OK (the OK sign is so touching), I'm done,
Shut up, already, damn!

during the 1999 and the purple rain shows that i saw, prince only played the single version and he always ended it with one measure of the remix version. I'd have loved to hear him do the album version from top to tip just once, live.

Ah, the remix version.

Who would have thought that changing the bass line would bring so much tension and novelty.
I love so much that 2nd part, with the new bass line, that it makes me wish it was the original version.
And don't start me on the hilarious "mayday!" and the frantic boomboxing.

Uh, not me!

The construction of the LP version is top notch to me. The two bridges (having two in the same song remains a fresh pop invention, bravo Prince)
come at the right moment, the building of the climax is perfect in every aspect,
and timing is everything.

The remix montage, which occupies the 1st half of the version, is nothing more that your usual standard eighties 12'' version,
a longer intro, an instrumental made out of solo'ed/muted tracks, in short copying and pasting tracks.
Useful (maybe) for DJs, boring to the fan.

What is incredible, even if quite simple in explanation for a musician/musicologist (relative minors 7ths),
is how this new bass line propels it somewhere that's not really rock, nor disco, nor funk, yet still keeps
the potent drive of the original chords intentions and riffs (well, they're still there. In fact, nothing has changed BUT the bass).
That very thin intersection of all three genres, which is a recurring quality in all of Prince's masterpieces :
"17 Days", "She's Always In My Hair", "If I Was Your Girlfriend"...

So, to be clear, I'm a huge fan of the 2nd part of the remix version.
But hey, I can't jump right to it, because another great quality of Prince's composition skills is his ad libs :
You have to wait for them to kick in.
