Create Your Own Prince Masterpeice using the songs of the last decade

It has been said many times during the past couple of decades that Prince still put out many great songs but disperses them on average to good albums (for him). Using the albums from his last decade (3121 to HnR2), design your album with between 10 to 12 songs. You can list your favorite songs in no particular order, or for the more adventurous, you can specify the song sequence as well. If you are not familiar enough to include songs from certain albums, go ahead and make your list but please note the album(s) excluded.

In sequence on album (not in order of favorites)

-- The Word

--Black Muse

--Funk n'Roll

--Future Soul Song

--Beginning Endlessly

--Anotherlove

--June

--It Could be Us

--Breakdown

--Way Back Home

--Colonized Mind

--Revelation

For me, it was rather hard to come up with the last choices, as it

excluded many songs I really like such as Wow, Big City, The Fury, Boom, 3121, and Hardrock Lover. EVEN HARDER was the sequence. I find that all the albums the past 10 years are so distinct from each other that they are hard to meld into one. The sound is so varied, as is the depth. I decided to try to go for tempo variation for the first 8 , and stuck with more a thematic progression in the final 4. There were a lot of other alternative ways that would have been as good.

Curious to see what you guys come up with.

This decade he put out many many average and below average albums... Many fans or fams always praise certain albums as GOOD or GREAT but that's because they always compare to what's been released during this era... If PHASE 2 was released in the 80's would that still be considered GREAT?

Anyway to me from 2006 - 2016 these were his GREAT releases imo.

-THE WORD

-FURY

-COLONIZED MIND

-DREAMER

-DANCE 4 ME

-FUTURE SOUL SONG

-STICKY LIKE GLUE

-U KNOW

-ANOTHERLOVE

-HARDROCKLOVER

-1OOO X'S & O'S

-REVELATION

I have not tried to sequence them, but I'd start with this dozen:

Black Sweat

Guitar

Dreamer

Dance 4 Me

Extraloveable (Reloaded)

Breakfast Can Wait

Anotherlove

Clouds

Breakdown

This Could Be Us

Stare

1000 X's & O's

Thanks for reviving the thread. I know it takes some work to whittle the songs down, which speaks to P's continued creativity till the end. Yours would be an album I would definitely play. Curious, which This Could Be Us makes your list?

I have crafted albums for each era with changes in songs (edits, remixes, extended, cross fades, etc). The last one I made is called 'Home':

Art Official Age
Rock n Roll Love Affair
Clouds
Fall In Love 2night
Breakdown
Baltimore
If I Could Get Ur Attention
The Gold Standard
Black Muse
Breakfast Can Wait
1000 Hugs & Kisses
June
Stop This Train
Time
FunknRoll
Revelation
Little Red Corvette/Dirty Mind
Way Back Home (edited with the affirmations)
Big City

Extra tracks:
Nothing Compares 2 U 2016 - The Family
Sometimes It Snows In April - D'Angelo

I definitely prefer the AOA version of "This Could Be Us" to the remix.

Interesting mix that shows that you can make a great album of recent songs without including songs from AOA.

Thanks smile

I chose 10 songs between my favorites, but I guess from AOA I would include Uknow and Funknroll.

Return to the Lotus

Missing out some of my favourite songs of the last decade such as Future Soul Song, That Girl Thang, Time, 3121, The Word... but I think it makes a pretty strong, unified rock album with organic production.

Thes are some unique selections, thinking outside of just the Prince CD box. Can you share what you like about the highlighted songs?

Yeah sure! Laydown sounds like a dramatic opener to me, not a song that should have been hidden as track 77! "From the heart of Minnesota, here come the purple Yoda, guaranteed to bring that dirty new sound!" The guitar sounds pretty badass and I love the fast flow of his vocals. It's probably a better opener than any that appeared on an album since 3121 and fitted the flow of my imagined album a lot better, leading into Hardrocklover. If Eye Could Get It Attention is just such a wonderful, sweet track, I love the vocoder effect, the high hats, it harkens back to the 70s funk sound that Prince was listening to growing up and is a lot of fun. The last track, Song Of The Heart, is again a wonderful song, very philosophical and good natured, makes a gentle and uplifting closer. It has a very positive message and again is very memorable. Hope this answers your question smile

Thanks. I enjoy hearing P fans show some love for songs that perhaps have beeunduner-appreciated or overlooked. Someimes it gives me (and hopefully others) a new perspective on the song.

Interesting that you are the 2nd person who mentioned Plectum Electrum, a song that wasn't even in my horizon while considering this list. So, I had to pop on the headphones and revisit it and headbang headbang . I bet this song would be awesome to hear in concert, if he ever played it!
