Prince Ultimate

Hi everybody. I have been a very long time lurker and this is my first time posting. I am currently working away from home. I have lost my laptop and am working with an unfamiliar computer. All my prince music and videos were on my laptop and I am devastated to be without the soundtrack to my life! In desperation I have purchased the compliation Cd Prince ulitimate. On the plus side I have been treated with extended and dance mixes of some of my all time fav tracks. The second CD has been a real treat. Every cloud and that! My question to all you lovely people who seem to be able to answer every question, is about the 12 inch version of raspberry beret. Twice on this when listening I can hear a cough. It is unexpected to my ears, but I have to say I have not heard the 12 inch before. Should this be on here? It seems as though it has slipped through. Also on the first CD the version of nothing compares to you with Rosie Gaines has a couple of squeals on it. Has this just been a version of popular songs hastily put together to satisfy the need to purchase Prince music since his death? I love this place the pictures the humour and the information. I am devastated at the loss of Prince. I have Prince stuff I listen to when I am feeling sad, when I feel fantastic. Stuff to get the housework done to, stuff I listen to when I am getting ready to go out. Stuff for the car, stuff when I chill. I am lacking stuff for when I am feeling so bloody devastated that this amazing man has disappeared from my normal day. So far the video of the love we make Montreux 2013 is the only only song that does it. Hi to everyone and happy Friday x

haven't you seen the classic Prince music video to Raspberry Beret from 1985???? eek eek

this is 1 of his most famous and best imho.... and the video includes the extended intro, and of course its no misteake that cough, made on purpose like the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame induction concert 2004, I believe Prince made a cough there as well in a song (but in another song maybe it was SOTT, cant exactly remember).. cool wink

the Ultimate collection, 2cd is from 2006, long before Prince's tragic death.. not hastily put togheter....

Nothing Compares 2 U is live and not that good I agree, originally this track is from the Hits / B-sides 3cd, and from 1993.. wink

When asked about the cough in an interview, P said, "I did it to be sick. To do something no one else would do."

Forgive me I am a bit of a technophobe. Using this dinosaur computer is not helping! I probably did see the 1985 video. Back then I was soooo busy just wiping the drool from my chin. Man he was soooo hot. I dont remember the extended 12 inch version or the cough. I was driving today and was smiling listening to the whole album. I changed to the second CD and BOOM every song on there was different to what I was expecting. Blame it on too much vodka way back then. Dancing and having fun(pre children). I love the fact that today I have been surprised. It is on repeat. I have found new love for some of the songs I enjoy on youtube. When I lay my hands on U Montreux 2009 is such a treat. Now I just have to learn how to get that for keeps. Man, Prince from day 1 you have always made me step out of my comfort zone. Thank you for your reply x

If this computer was friendly I would of checked on the vault. I love this song and have enjoyed watching it on youtube with Rosie Gaines. I don't mind the squeals jut think that Prince would be frowning, ( Remember that concert where he gave the names of the people responsible for the sound in the building, with a shout out to Alicia Keyes)Rosie Gaines voice gives me shivers. Combined with Prince doing the Jesus look man I need to step outside into the cool night air. Not sure I could of been trusted to send him back on stage looking as contained and calm as he did. Thank you for your reply

Thank you. I am away from home and feeling a little lonely. New job and am a bit overwhelmed. I kind of held my breath and posted as I knew someone on here would have the answer to my question. I am working my way through the picture thread. So many pictures that are making me smile and making me sad. Very bittersweet. Some of the songs that lifted me make me cry. Some of the songs that I was indifferent to are now favourites. Whole albums that I played only a couple of times, now have meaning. Just listened to a blues selection and am laughing. Man that Prince guy was a real piece of work.

Yes the cough is intentional and I always thought it was very funny. If it were unintentional it would have even been funnier.

Yep, fellow orgers here are right about "Raspberry Beret" 12''. Agreed about The Hits/B-Sides. That set is one of the best (if not THE best, in my opinion) greatest hits sets I've ever had the pleasure of owning. It's certainly the best one from a Prince fan perspective.

Ultimate Prince is a cool little package though. A nice and comprehensive journey through the beginning to (unfortunately) just 1992. Honestly should've included a song from Come , "Space" or "Pheromone" would've been nice even though they weren't hits....

The second disc is great smile! Would've loved for some of the early 12'' versions like "Sexy Dancer" and maybe 1 or 2 others: 12'' "I Would Die 4 U"; 12'' "America"; or even something like: the full version of "Delirious". The re-recorded version of "Something In The Water" he made in '82 would've been a nice addition...

The packaging itself is satisfying though smile! I love the white/purple mix, plus the insert of all his 12'' singles, etc... LOVE it.

Ha! Caught myself rambling again rolleyes

Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

First time i heard most of the extended versions was when this first came out. I already had the hits/b sides triple cd, so the first ultimate cd never gets played.
it inspired me to go looking for all the old singles, eps and remixes that i could find. My favourites include get off maxi, space universal love, and my name is prince/get wild/good life multi track remixes.
Favourite on ultimate is hard to determine but always loved this version of Pop Life. I think i have about 8 versions of pop life (live and studio) on my playlist.
This is what it's like in the dream factory...

IIRC the "squeals" you hear in Nothing Compares 2 U are moments of feedback during the live performance. Not the best live version of that song but it was Prince's choice to include it on The Hits/B Sides for whatever reason.
.
I think what thedance is referring to regarding the RRHOF performance was Prince purposefully clearing his throat in the middle of the performance. Not exactly a cough but it is a similar kind of thing to the Raspberry Beret cough.

"Prince Talks" Rolling Stone magazine 1985. Prince was interviewed by Neal Karlen.
