Tyka as Curator of his music

I am actually excited about the possibility of Tyka being the curator of his music. She is the closest thing that we have left on earth to Prince and it will be nice for her to release the legacy of his music, videos, writings and home to us. She seems to have a wonderful spirit and I just hope people allow her to share his legacy with hos fans. I also hope that she engages people like Sheila E. and others from each era to help her.

Tyka is a wonderful lady. I am confident that she will put a great team together that does justice to Prince's legacy.

I would rather have professionals of a higher caliber - say Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

I agree with the above that it should be a professional, someone that has direct knowledge of working with him such as Jam and Lewis or Questlove as he is a pro with a vast knowledge of Prince's catalog, released and unreleased.

As long as whomever does it, does so with what Prince's music meant to him and those that loved his music for what it meant to him in mind-- as opposed to just trying to score "paydays" off of it-- should and could be a very good thing for all concerned. geek

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Hope she has good counsel. Lots of sharks in the biz.

I do believe she will honor his wishes. Maybe keeping her as curator while involving professionals in a leadership team would be a way to go.

What do you guys think if Sheila E. be involved in this?

I think maybe Quest as an advisor to Tyka but then again isn't he only into the 80s? I'm not sure. But yeah, she was his little sis, around him all the time so I trust her with this. Say like she would know what's too personal in the vault & that so yeah. She's his blood & he loved her. She should have the final say whatever happens.

I would rather it be someone like Alan Leeds: he understands artists but he also understands the music business. He'd be a good balance.

I love her too. She is an amazing and one of my favorite musician. Unfortunately, I do see discrepancies between what she says and what she does sad

I wasn't referring to this specific situation. I find discrepancies in past instances.

That said, I haven't read any information in regards to her participating in recording release. I know however that she will be the artistic director of the fans memorial taking place at the US bank stadium in October. Not sure if that would be her "audition" for future involvement.

As long as it's not a religious not that refuses to acknowledge/release his more controversial risqué that represented the time in which they were created

I agree with the fact that all of it should be represented. Prince mentioned in an interview with Kurt Loder from MTV back in 1999 that the vault contained some "unfinished work with the Revolution, some very cool jazz, and a very erotic Prince".

I kinda feel that it has to be Tyka. They were brother and sister, family. While Prince was here we could claim some kind of ownership of him as he was putting out a public persona and releasing his music. He gave us that and chose to - but now, well, it feels much as a selfish fan I'd love to see music released as we would like it to be - spiritually and psychically it should be Tyka that calls the shots for her brother. Regardless of what direction she decides to take with it - I would have to support that. Big loves purple family. Xoxox

Although I hope his music does get the treatment it deserves, I just don't trust Tyka in general. Something about her reeks of insincerity.

God no, keep Quest FAR away from his catalog. Anyone who chooses him for any type of counsel in the matter needs a wake up call.

family being in charge makes sense. but the team under her should be Alan & Eric Leeds, Levi, and Kirk putting stuff together. those guys have been around for so long and probably know everything inside out more than anyone.

Good question! I am not aware of any information in regards to her position in the legacy. Bremer Bank is the temporary appointed administrator of his estate per judge order and that includes the content of the vault, according to Star Tribune. Once heirs are defined, it will be another story.

I feel that Alan Leeds would be the best person for this job.

OKP: Can we talk about The Vault? We understand you might be wary of weighing in prematurely…but as the main caretaker of James Brown’s archival legacy, who also had such a long working relationship with Prince you seem uniquely qualified to speak to the handling of his unreleased body of work. In your opinion how should his musical archive be handled, and what do you think are the realistic or legal possibilities around it?

AL: Please share your view of my qualifications to mine the Prince vault with his family, who will be responsible for making that decision! [laughs] My experience with producing similar projects with James Brown’s archive has taught me that much of what is unissued is unissued for a reason. Prince has hundreds, if not thousands, of tapes full of unreleased material. I suspect much of it is unfinished and if it were up to me, nobody is going to make an album by finishing incomplete songs ala some of the posthumous Jimi Hendrix albums. No way. There are some intriguing jam-oriented projects that were aborted in the late 1980s – hours and hours of Prince jamming with Eric, Sheila, Wendy & Lisa, that could probably make a terrific album but one without anything resembling a hit “song.”

But in this fantasy, my priority would be to produce remastered, deluxe editions of Prince’s classic albums. The CDs available are still the old, original CD masters. They could be tremendously improved sonically and could include chronologically relevant bonus tracks, non-LP singles “B” sides and perhaps a few choice unissued tracks. Secondly, I’d love to compile a series of “live” recordings, representing each of his major ‘80s/early ‘90s tours. Tons of shows have been bootlegged but many were professionally recorded and there are some incredible performances.

Alas, it appears the Estate is likely to be tied up in the courts for the seeable future. There’s no telling how that will shake down and how long (years perhaps) before anyone has the legal right to go in the vault and get busy.
