Listening to Other Music. How do you do it?

I have listened to nothing but Prince since 4/21. In my entire life, I've never done anything like this musically...listened only to one artist.

Just now, I am in a hotel lobby doing some work on their computer. There is of course slow music on, love songs, ballads, etc. - and all from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

It is so painful to hear. I don't know why.

I think it's combination of it being from the past (Prince's era)...maybe I feel it's an era that's really passing now or something. I'm middle-aged now, so...

I think it's also about listening to something other than Prince. Moving on is hard.

Anyone identify?

How do you enjoy other music?

Just now, I laughed, because I thought of a cartoon I saw recently where a little boy asked his father, "Dad, what's bad music?" And the father answers, "I don't know, son. We only listen to Prince." If anyone can find that cartoon, please post it!
Thank you!

Just after he died, I was like that. I only wanted to hear Prince and nothing else. But even then, I knew it was just a phase. I'm back to normal. And how long it takes for someone to go "back to normal", if there even is such a thing, that's different for everybody. Moving on is hard, but still, you're doing it, even if you don't realize it. And if that involves listening to nothing but Prince for three months, then that's your way of dealing with it.

I have always listened to more than one artist. Maybe it's the ADHD in me but I can't just nail down just one artist to listen to. Maybe for a few weeks or so. Heck I don't even listen to one genre. What I find is that the music my dad listened to "The Byrds, Rolling Stones, Peter Paul and Mary, ZZ Top, The Beatles, Motown and the Blues. My mom listened to to Stevie Wonder, Prince, Whitney Houston, Pop of the 80s, and then mix that with my own jr. high and high school days of the 90s and it just hits me in the heart that today's music no longer sounds like that. Remember how they always had that one station on your radio that played the "soft" rock of the 70s and 80s back in the day? Well Nashville does not have one of those anymore. All music from the 70-90s is on stations that also plays Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Rhianna and such now days. There is no longer an oldies radio station To me that is so heartbreaking. Which is why I only listen to regular radio driving to and from work so that I can get traffic updates around the city. Otherwise it's Youtube, Tidal, Spotify, and websites like that to find my preferred music

Yup. That's part of it too.
Luckily we have radio stations here that play all that stuff.
But boy is it hard to listen to.
Maybe I'll start listening to some music by people Prince jammed with...I like a few of the girls' music.

Did you happen to see Nikki?

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

I'm used to listening to music other than just Prince.

I have listened to classical, I've been to a few city

band concerts at the park, I have done some youtube

posts in chat that had a theme.

Last night I was going through songs that have a color

in the title. I've listened to Chris Cornell and Nickelback

and others.

I'm 63 and have heard all kinds of music throughout my

lifetime. I'll tell you one thing....I would much rather listen

to Prince than what the industry is putting out now. There

are some Indie artists who are pretty interesting. Although

it seems like you have to dig for those.

No matter your age, pursue your dreams so that you will LIVE.

Honestly, if I listen to too much Prince, it starts to bring me down a bit, so other music has been almost theraputic.... Particularly his recent stuff. I'll be enjoying a song, and then it'll hit me that I'll never get a chance to see him perform it or anything again and I get all soggy.

Also, I have not listened to his music in the pressence of casual-fan friends at all. Its too weird.

If you will, so will I

I've tried, but other music sounds so...limp. Lifeless. Or worse, trite and annoying. I'd rather listen to nothing than try to listen even to other artists I've loved for many years.

The man was nothing if not entrancing, seductive:) Soulful. It is everywhere in all his music.

Music is omnipresent in my life, whether it's Prince or anyone else. Life is about balance, so I listen to anything. I think some folk's overt attention to Prince music is part of the grieving process. It won't be permanent; it's unreasonable to think that.

The people that influenced Prince, and those he influenced all deserve a listen on the regular.

I was the opposite at first, couldn't hear that voice without getting completely bummed out & I didn't have time for that, had to be functional. I'm getting back to listening to him in small doses, & still only a few things. It gets better week to week. Discovering 20TEN really helped.

heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I'm still pretty much where you are, with the exception that a few non-Prince songs will pop in my head from time to time that I want to listen to and I do. But I don't spend too much time before it's back to Prince. That and visiting here daily are the signs that I'm not fully moving on just yet but I think that's o.k. I mean, it's Prince! Can't think of anyone better to get stuck on smile

I agree that it is part of the griving process. Just stay attuned to yourself and you will know when you are ready to listen to someone else. It sounds like Prince has a very special place in your heart, which I can relate to. For me, I having been playing Prince everyday, but in the past month I mix it up with someone completely different, say Radiohead or Tegan & Sara (go figure). What I have discovered is that while I enjoy the break, I even appreciate Prince more when I come back. I call it the contrast effect! biggrin Prince will be with you whatever your journey takes you hug

I find comfort listening to Sirius xm stations 70s on 7 and 80s on 8. On the 70s station, I'm in the decade of those who influenced him, and in the 80s, surrounded by other artists who were on the radio with him initially. I love hearing all of the synthesizers of the 80s .. P did it best but there's something comforting about being immersed in that decade.

Show your heart to me.

Listened to pretty much nothing but Prince for the last 30 odd years and don't see that changing just coz he isn't here any more. There is so much to choose from and such diversity which is why I am a fan in the first place. I do try to listen to other things but it just doesn't seem to "happen" for me...I love guitars so I grew up with Jimi as my parents loved him and then as a teen went to Prince, I am willing to try to listen to others so any sensible suggestions for potential listening gratefully received wink

At first he was all I listened to. I couldn't even force myself to listen to anything else. Now...still P 90% of the time. If I do venture out and listen to other artists, it's literally 3-4 songs max and then I'm back to P. I'm always drawn back to him, it doesn't feel right if I don't. Not now at least.

From now on, 4 U I shall be wild ๐Ÿ’œ

At first it was Prince 24/7 but I really enjoy live music so after a few weeks I knew I had to get back out there and see some live music. I started with blues and jazz at some local clubs and I have worked my way up to more. I still listen to Prince more than before April but I am learning to enjoy other music again. music

I can relate to that. I do listen to other music but it's mostly Prince always anyway and it'll continue like that.

I have started listening to a lot of the former band members of P lately. I like The Family, Morris Day and The Time, Flyte Time, and so forth. I find that I"m interested in listening to those he performed with and also those he mentored. My goal is to nail down exactly what the difference is in the "Minneapolis Sound" from say those from Detroit, Memphis, and such. What I am finding is that the Minneapolis Sound is essentially elements of NYC, Detroit, Memphis, and so forth all wrapped up into one which is like a music lovers buffett! It is so diverse! I also find myself listening closely to other artists and going hmm bet P could make it super funky if he got his hands on that song. I feel so shameful that I listen to other artists and think hmm wonder how P would change that up? I also find that I am able to hear P influence in many of the artists as well as pick out songs that I know he either wrote or produced for another person.

It's really easy. For a week or so after Prince passed away I really enjoyed re-discovering his catalogue and remembering the good times I associated with each record. But eventually, you will come to realize and remember that there's so much other great music out there that will enrich your life just as much as Prince did. Don't take the gift of music (or life, for that matter) for granted by focusing on only one artist.

I can listen to other music because I have to. I have a writing job and listening to music a) helps me to think and b) drowns out my co-workers.

I mostly listen to instrumental music when I'm working because when I'm trying to put words together, hearing other words (in the form of lyrics) is distracting. Prince only did so much instrumental music and I can't listen to that over and over, day after day, week after week, so I need something else. I have a pretty big library of classical and other instrumental music, so that's where I turn. shrug

We donโ€™t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yeah, I've listened to nothing but P since April as well. I tried to move on and play another artist in my car, but the musicianship paled in comparison to P's music. I just couldn't do it. So for now, I'm content listening to Prince. He satisfies my music palette. wink

The musician's experience as an artist--this is a short video done by a cellist playing Andante from the mountain tops. https://aeon.co/videos/a-...u-d-expect

It is beautiful and moving. Her story about sacrifices for art--sacrifices people hearing the music do not know Maybe should not know since it might conflict with the intention of the art. But listening even to her play rolled right back to Prince.

I think part of the phenomenon is because he was so private and when he died his entire life was rolled out in so many stories. More than 40 years of personal, funny, fussy, demanding and exotic. An introverted genius living to make music as he heard it in his head. Music like no other. In the weeks since he left the planet the crush of personal, artisitic, cultural and funny stories about him is like reading a book. A book you don't want to finish because you know the ending...but you cannot stop reading.

From teasing Travis Smiley in a surpise Today visit to watching him perform a long time ago in this video https://youtu.be/F8BMm6Jn6oU --we're waiting for the next chapter. The next story in the series. Surely there is more stories, more music. Open the Vault. Let the Doves fly.

Took a break and listened to Sly and watched their Youtube videos. They are really upbeat and it was interesting to see young Larry and the cool clothes they wore!!! That band rocked and was some kind of funky.

It's embarassing but, when I decided I needed to take a break from all P music all the time - I started listening to some of his inspirations. But I've always loved so many of the artists he admired. Chaka and Rusfus is another I'm listening to this week. And one more, the ever amazing Marvin Gaye. So I've worked those in but just finished over 4 hours of burning Prince onto CD's for myself and a set for my sister!!! I'll never stop listening. xoxoxox
