Justin Timberlake's tweet about Prince on SNL

This tweet made me laugh. That performance blew me (and the audience) away too. I always loved it when Prince reminded people he could rock as hard as anyone. And with an all female band. cool

Very cool .I knew Justin loves prince but that thing he did at the golden globes in 2008 to mock prince wasn't very cool .

Yea, but JT dissed Prince not too long ago. If you recall that time when JT came out with "Sexy back", and Prince made the comment "Sexy never left." Then, JT came out with a song and the lyrics referenced Prince (where are you on the charts? Oh right, you weren't there".......that was low-down dirty. I'm not a huge JT fan, but after he said that, I kinda lost interest in him.

Damn, you're too emotional if you'll let that line provoke you. That must be the least mean diss I've ever heard. It's allowed to have some fun with legends also, even though you're not a toenail compared to the one you're dissing. It's just good old entertainment. Ever heard rap music? Prince didn't have any hits for years, but still managed to go to the top of the album charts a few times in his later years. JT was also alot younger. Prince in his haydays, could be a bit cocky himself. None of us hates him for that.

I guess Prince was "too emotional" also, and what JT said didn't provoke "me". I just didn't like what he said about Prince, that's all. Prince always retaliated when things were said about him that were "untrue". It seems like you are provoking me with comments like "ever heard of rap music"? I just think someone who disses another artist, then shows respect after they died is considered a "hypocite", don't you?

Didn't Prince start it with the sexy never left comment? And is it fair to call JT a hypocrite in this case? Let's assume that what JT said was out of a dislike for Prince as a person. After all, it was only in response to Prince saying sexy never left and downplaying JT'S contribution. So maybe JT didn't like Prince's personality. But it's obvious from JT'S music that he was a fan of Prince’s music. So is it hypocritical to show respect to an artist whose art you enjoyed after they die?

For the record, I don't think either of them took the "beef" too seriously.

I agree; I don't think either one of them took the comments to heart. When Prince said "Sexy never left." I don't think he meant that as a put-down to JT. The comments JT made in his lyrics were quite obvious that it was meant for Prince.

Don't quote me Lady Gaga dissed Prince too and all her fans were saying sick things too and when he passed she was all lovey dovey. Best thing it to ignore these sort of people. Never been a fan of JT either.

getting this back on topic, that SNL performance was great. Probably one of the last times I tuned into that show. I think it was the first (or maybe second) they allowed a musical guest to have one ~8 minute segment. cool

Don't even get me started on Gaga! Not a fan of hers at all, and I will be kind here and leave it at that, LOL. I agree -- just ignore the haters. Prince did the same. biggrin

Yes, it was indeed in reference to Prince. It was all over social media when it happened.

Didn't he insinuate that she paid for some award she got? lol Wouldn't be surprised if that stuff happens though. Always thought JT was an overly sensitive prick, but anyway...

My cousin is a fan of lady gaga so when he showed me the CD booklet for one of her albums I looked at it out of curiosity and in the liner notes she said a special thanks to Prince

Maybe what endiadj said (Didn't he insinuate that she paid for some award she got?) Got her mad , but some of her fans on facebook went to far with the hate.

Yes, it was indeed in reference to Prince. It was all over social media when it happened.

And others wondered whether it was about Janet Jackson and her appearance on Oprah where she talked about the Super Bowl incident and wasn't entirely kind to Timberlake and said she hadn't spoken to him since. JT references TV in the lyrics; Prince never made the "sexy never left" comments on TV.

“Could you speak up and stop mumbling?/I don’t think you came in clear/When you’re sitting on the top/it’s hard to hear you from way up there/I saw you tryin’ to act cute on TV/Just let me clear the air/We missed you on the charts last week/[Bleep] that’s right, you wasn’t there.”

No, Gaga never said anything bad about Prince, it was her fans as a result of Prince posting a letter where an employee claimed that she is leaving because of people buying Billboard awards and Gaga had won that year.

There is an interview where he did not mention Prince as an influence. He only mentioned stevie wonder, mj. This was a little after the incident. I cant believe P's little, sexy never left comment drove him to act out like that. It wasn't even a diss on P's part. Im glad P paid him dust.

Whatever. He probably should have respected him more etc, blah blah. I do think alot of artists are afraid of mentioning Prince as one of their influences, as people always will say that the new artist is nothing compared to what he or she is influenced by. D'angelo will always get those comments by Prince fans. I'm not saying fams, cause alot of the so called fams are clearly fanatics. It's like a sport saying how bad other artists are, when compared to Prince, it's really getting dated. Although I agree that Prince is IT, I don't feel the need to always compare artists, as if it was a freakin competition.

Just because he might not have always mentioned Prince doesn't mean he wasn't an influence. Prince didn't always mention Hendrix but we know he was clearly an influence.
