A Younger (Under 30 Prince fan) complaint

I've noticed that being a younger fan I've always felt like there was a lot of snobbery in the Prince community, especially from completists. I was born like 6 months before Diamonds and Pearls was released. Of course I haven't heard every single solitary thing the man put out and I can't own every piece of material because some things are out of print (and therefore out of my price bracket lol ) I feel like there is a lack of respect where there could be education and embrace. Also annoyed at the people that act like being poor and a Prince fan makes you less of a fan because you can't own all this rare, expensive shit.

sorry for the rant, I've just come across some nasty attitudes and comments on here and on Prince fan pages and I'm thinking like, I'm 25. I couldn't get into Glam Slam at 1 years old and I think the first Prince CD I remember clear as Day is Emancipation. It's nearly impossible to know every piece of knowledge about the man as somebody twice my age, but that doesn't mean I love him any less.

I feel you. I'm 22 and never experienced this (yet lol) but i see what you're coming from with this.

Let's be real here and this is for the snobby ppl out there, just because you own a bunch a rares and out-of-print cd's and all of that doesn't make you 100% superior to others like "oo aren't u s0 spechul" just straight up brushing it on young fans faces.

yes we may be bunch a "whiny millenials" but atleast we ain't braggers. cool

Instead of complaining, go listen.

It's not your fault your younger, but the music isn't going anywhere. There is plenty to consume.

Curious what is out of print that you can't listen too.

So orgnote them some places they can go instead of proving their point about the snobbery. Go ahead, I dare you.

I have no problem with going to listen, and I do, often. It's just the fact that when I say I haven't heard something or I mispeak or have a question, it's this big thing like I'm less of a fan because I'm not up on every little thing.

And physical copies of a lot of the 90s stuff is out of print. Shit can you even get the Gold Experience right now?

Keep your head up high. I honestly believe that Prince appreciated younger fans like you. One of the threads ive enjoyed the most on the Org was hearing from younger fans and how they came to know an artist who is barely heard on the
Radio these days. Alot enjoyed many of his 90s work. Dont pay those folks any mind.

Thanks for sharing this thoughtful post. I'm in my 40s, so I'm old enough to remember life at the beginning of Prince's career and to have bought the majority of his music the year that it came out. Your point about out of print music being potentially expensive/difficult to track down is a good one.

I have noticed that as well, the wedge between the oldies & newbies - so to speak.

I don't understand it myself. MY first reaction you younger fans is, you've got AMAZING taste in music, what's your favourite song? thumbs up! wink

Should be no reason for people to belittle you just because you were born in a different year. OR for those who just adamently think their way is the right way/only only (sounds like a song coming on). The whole: you like THAT song/album - that's garbage. Really guys? It's ALL PRINCE MUSIC we're talking about here. I don't consider any of it garbage. Do I like some less than I love others, yes, but am I going to rag on someone else because their opinion is different? Absolutely not. I don't think anyone else should either.

.

.

Please don't let them get to you. There ARE a lot of amazing people in this online community - just brush the negativity off. Sadly in a forum of people who claim they love and support Prince... I for one don't think Prince would condone such judgements when he always boasted that we are all the same. Treat each other that way. Love4OneAnother guys. grouphug

That's true with any other fanbase really. There's always certain amount of sobbery from those who have access to the rarer items or information than the general fans. Don't let it detour you. Keep learning, keep reading, you'll discover a lot of things. Its weeding thru the bs that takes time.

Apologies if my being direct came off as snobbery, but I'm not upset at other people that got to listen to Hendrix when he was originally released, or see Elvis in concert.

Prince left us with so much music, and so much more to come, I don't see the purpose in complaining from anyone. Rookie or completist.

What the OP doesn't realize is that even though I got to live during Prince's career, seeing him many times live etc...,I would give anything to be able to hear
1999, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT for the first time again.

So in a way having so much to discover still is a blessing. But like all us OL' schoolers. You gotta be willing to do the work.

I am in my thirties, and I was born in 85' about six months after Purple Rain was in theatres, and I myself haven't heard everything Prince created musically either, so I still have a long way to go myself. But don't let the people who are older get to you, just continue to explore his music and enjoy what he left all of us, because I definitely think Prince loved younger fans like us, as well as older fans.

Now don't get me wrong y'all. Ive been a Prince fan since I have been in diapers (Raspberry Beret was my favorite song in kindergarten) and was borderline obsessed in high school lol (I've said on here several times I used to tell folks he was my dream man and dumped a guy for calling him gay) but at the same time I don't know every little thing. And definitely haven't heard a lot of the 93-01'ish material.

My point is cut us young folks some slack, it's nearly impossible for our collections and things to be as big and our knowledge to be as vast. Most of it is second hand to begin with.

Point is, you ain't gotta be an asshole lol share and educate instead of being mean, that's definitely not how you keep the legacy going.

I have Tidal even though the hifi is expensive. I just think it's crazy how, people on this very site will say "real fans already have that/heard that..." Or "real fans already have physical copies..." As if all the years I've spent loving, listening to, and praying I would have the money when he came close enough to me to see him live (when he finally did my gas bill was due so I did the adult thing and chalked it up as a "maybe next time"...)

I have experience the snobbery too, and the people who snubbed me were saying things like,

"I am a long time fan, and I know that that is not how Prince would have wanted you to get to know his music" and getting all "Princelier Than Thou" on me.

I would just like to say that even though I am not telepathically communicating with Prince from beyond the grave,

I think that Prince would have wanted his older fans to make his younger and newer fans feel welcome here instead of trolling them.

I was about 12-13 when I joined Housequake. I felt so out of place and had bad experiences there because of the fact that I was young. So Yea, I get what you mean. That's actually the reason I only lurked here from 2011-4/2016. But honestly age ain't shit lol No I may not know about every bootleg, or every leaked unreleased track. But I've learned and discovered a lot here. I actually was going to start a thread thanking everyone on the org for making this such an awesome experience for me. I'm a die hard P fan and nobody can take that away from me. I'm 26 and quite frankly, I know more about his music than some fans older than my parents.

However I am jealous I missed out on so many good years. But, I wasn't born yet. What can ya do lol If you've had a bad experience I'm sorry because I totally know how it feels. Just keep discovering, there's still SO much I've yet to hear and see. Block out whatever negativity comes your way and just stick to the music heart

Is it all about age & snobbery tho? Lots of different age groups on here pre april. Maybe, just maybe, we were a little dysfunctional family 4 yrs, brought together by a man who the masses had ignored or wateva 4 yrs. Then we got hit with a tsunami...then it was chaos & confusion...reeling from one humongous shock 2 another. Many disappeared, many hid under new names, many, many strangers appeared...
