Now wouldn't that be wonderful!

That concert was not shot on film or shot in HD, so a DVD is the highest quality possible. The master is SD.

I saw an Ali documentary a few years ago, i've been watching fight footage of his since i was a kid, but it was obvious someone did a lot of tinkering to the old footage, it looked like it was shot with modern equipement, b/w not withstanding. It did make a difference, you could see the muscle definition better and everything, it was just cleaner, they can do some amazing stuff with technology, and i'm sure they can't do anything with some footage too,.

75 bucks? i don't remember that at all, you shoulda taped it offa hbo. also, i wonder if they'll package the same 20 year stuff with this bunch, they put together a decent package 11-12 years ago of purple rain with interviews of everyone but Prince, it was pretty good, i still have it but i scratched the fuck out of it. i bought another PR dvd that didn't have shit other than the movie on it recently for 5 bucks.

If it was film than it was high quaity. Even a movie shot in the 30's like Gone With the wind was shot on 35mm film which is higher quality than SD video.

But if you have any link to old footage that looks like modern quality, I'd like to check it out just to figure out what they did.

The Lovesexy concert quite like the Alphabet St video was shot in SD to begin with. sad

So was the Purple Rain concert.

The parade birthday show was shot on film from what I recall. That could be put to blu-ray if they have the master film copy.

I merely stated that this re release is merely a rehash of the 2007 compilation that was ignored.

I personally don't count concert films so maybe "theatrical" was the wrong word to use 🤔

Yes, a color shot from UTCM, wish this release had the color version though, it would be a sight to be seen.

i have a link to the ali movie, "facing Ali" which came out several years ago, they really went over and above on the old footage, just superior to anything I've ever seen. in the extras on the dvd, they go into what they did, i doubt it's on youtube though: https://www.youtube.com/w...iaixSJ7D0I

All 3 movies were released on WB Home Video in 2007. I paid $18 for this set then.

The pic shows DVD's.

So this is higher resolution content on blu-rays we're expecting now.

Soooooo, I recently grabbed the blu ray of PR, can't even remember if director commentary was on there. Is that a new feature here, or do I already have it? falloff

Shit, now own 4 copies of PR. VHS is probably in a box somewhere, initial DVD release, 25th anniversary DVD release, & Blu Ray. I'll only get this set if any of those features are actually new (though UTCM on BluRay might make the panny-drawz explode) hmmm

i don't think it's new unless magnoli redid it, i have the 20th anniversary version with commentary on it. Magnoli didn't really do much with the clout he gained from PR, he did a fine job on SOTT though.

Not really .I own both the bluray and dvd for purple rain.there's not much of a difference at all. Most old films dont differ from quality when transfered from DVD to bluray even though they claim its "remastered ". I'll have to pass on this one. [Edited 8/4/16 19:49pm]

The Bluray of Purple Rain SOUNDS so much better than the lossy DVD.That's enough reason to upgrade.

It is clear that the blu-ray can show some more detail.

Can anyone explain the theoretical resolution of such an old analog film as 'purple rain'?

I.o.w.: would we need a 4K reissue or even 'better' or is this blu-ray plenty? (it's only 'HD')

4k or even 8k would of course have more detail, but for most home screens, 1080p is all you need.

I project blu-ray films on my apartment wall, so I've got the equivalent of an 84" screen (could be even bigger, if my apartment was bigger), and I can't make out individual pixels in the HD image unless it was, say, a still-frame of a white diagonal line on a plain black background.

I think, theroretically, film's resolution is defined by the size of it's grain, the organic particles that vary from frame to frame. A movie like Purple Rain was shot on extremely grainy film for many scenes, and 1080p is probably large enough to successfully duplicate the image quality of the original film. A movie like Gone With the Wind or Vertigo or any big Hollywood production normally used powerful lighting and low grain film (prticles are finer) resulting in very smooth images that arguably could be beyond the resolution of 1080p. This all matters when you watch something on a big screen or projection.

The idea of a 4K master is the same as remastering an audio album in 24 bit 196Hz but then releasing it as MP3 downloads... even if the music was made of of low bit samples and electronic noises. They want the canvas to be of much higher fidelity in order to not lose any quality, even if the canvas is overkill. But I just found this article which really explains it:

cool site, but I'm suspicious of their comparisons because...

I made my shots myself from the discs. I was curious as to what the difference was for such a grainy movie. What's funny is I thought the difference would be even more dramatic, but it's still significant if you watch movies on a large screen or up close at full resolution. It really becomes more apparent when it's in motion.

Ironically the DVD being scaled down to 720 x 480 (vs HD 1920 x 1080) might actually artificially clean up the image in terms of grain because the grain might be smaller than the pixels at that point. But along with grain goes little details. Grain was part of the original movie.

At the moment I'm working on the image quality of an indie film shot in 4K which is an entire other world of detail.

Looking at more of that site, I can see that in the shot of the sheet music, if you look at what's in the box, it is defintely a bit sharper on the music notes, but over all it is grainy as hell, and the sharpness difference isn't as dramatic as the color shift is.
