Oh for crying out loud, pure on a technical level Blu-ray is waaaay better than DVD: a larger color spectrum, proper speed, etc.

.

Also, these appear to be new masters, so unless you're a time traveler, you haven't even seen the new encode of Purple Rain -- so how would you know this one isn't better?

.

.

Utter nonsense. First of all they aren't "transfered from DVD to Blu-ray", the BD encode is made on the basis of a high-def master that in most cases didn't exist for the DVD. There are plenty of cases where there are stunning BD editions. Ever heard of Criterion?

[Edited 8/5/16 2:32am]

Indeed. Most of my DVDs became obsolete the moment I watched a Blu Ray. There is a whole world of difference between 480p and 1080p on a decent TV. A whole world. Getting Under The Cherry Moon on Blu Ray for the first time is a big deal.

[Edited 8/5/16 5:03am]

Absolutely, both Bart and leecaldon.

Bluray is probably as significant a difference from DVD as DVD was from VHS - unless you have an average or below average HDTV (relating to either or both visuals and sound). An average or below average HDTV won't provide much of a reason to upgrade from DVD. Good news, though, you can get a great HDTV now for south of $300. And you can get a proper Bluray player for south of $70.

I will admit, these are very pleasing to the eye. However, if there's no new special features, I'm keeping my money.

The Facebook ad says "newly remastered", but that doesn't really mean anything.

.

Going back to the original negative and doing a 4K scan... now THAT'S remastering. But doing a quick digital upconvert on the existing master so it fits the HD video and audio spec... that's not good.

.

Until WB doles out more info on the "remastering", there's no reason to get excited.

Unless "Under The Cherry Moon" is in color and/or there are deleted scenes in the other movies that I've NEVER seen, I'll pass. I had no problems with spending my hard earned money on just about any ol' damn thing, back when it came to supporting Prince, himself. But to get me to reach in my purse now, knowing full well, Prince won't be enjoying himself off of any of that money. Bullshit! It will ONLY be for something that I better really want, will enjoy and makes me ridiculously fucking happy! hammer

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

It's the visual difference of HD to SD.

But they are really putting out the other two movies on blu-ray?! That's great!

For some reason, when they made the movie of SOTT and projected it on theaters, they didn't go back to a film negative of the music video for that section, and actually seemed to use a transfer of the broadcast video... put back to film. I remember this in the theater.

So they shot the video on film, scaled it down to broadcast video for You Got the Look on MTV, then shot that on film, scaling it back up to show in theaters for the conert film.

Somebody must have detroyed the film negatives or film master of the video!

I have a 55" Panasonic VIERA VT60 Series Full HD Plasma TV, with videophile settings for best movie watching. It's a 1080p TV, not 4K. But these images are not off a TV, they are details of the same frame off the discs themselves.

That concert was not shot on film or shot in HD, so a DVD is the highest quality possible. The master is SD.

i dunno, i never cared for quality, whether in music or movies, i was just watching a docu on the wizard of oz and they were showing how they cleaned up both the sound and the film of the movie, sounds like they put in a lot of time but personally, i never liked perfection unless it was my own music. the flaws are great whether it's the pops in old film or the mistakes in Elvis' sun sessions, it's part of what makes them spontaneious and great
