Prince has 960 songs registered

These songs r registered with the copyright office. Does anyone know if all these songs have been released or could some of these song titles be some of the songs in his vault ?

Here's the list.

I don't know that all of these have been officially (or unofficially) released, but this isn't his entire catalog. At first glance, there are songs missing. "Cause and Effect", "Free Urself", "Indifference" are just three I noticed aren't on there.

This would take you doing some simple math on your own, ya know. If he averaged 12 songs per album, that 80 albums to equal 960 songs. He was only at half that when he died. Of course, you can calculate on the internet only stuff, and songs he gave to other artists, but you're still not near that 960 mark. I don't even know if there are 960 songs in bootlegs that are circulating.

It's not hard to figure out how many songs he's released, really. A bit of effort, and you could have a pretty good rough number. As someone else noted, there are songs not listed, so it's not even a complete list of his recordings. It's simply what he decided to register a copyright on. I would imagine the estate is going to have a heck of a time registering new stuff as new albums come out with songs that have no been registered yet.

Very little of this list is unreleased. There are a few things in it, such as "lust u always" that he offered to other artists, which haven't been released, but I assume it's standard practice for him to copyright a song before he sends a copy to another artist, as means of protecting it. A number of things in this list appear to be titles for incidental music from the Purple Rain and Cherry Moon films, such as "I Like Your Song Too" and "A Check For Mrs Wellington". Interestingly, "Big Tall Wall" appears here, so it must have been a serious contender for release at some point. "Heartz Of Men" by 2pac appears here, showing Prince gets a good piece of that for the sample from the coda of Darling Nikki. "Pray" by MC Hammer is in this list as well, for obvious reasons. But very little of this list is vault material.

Trust me, I'm not knowledgeable about everything he's done. As I said, just at first glance, I noticed those three songs weren't listed. Mainly because I've been listening to those songs a lot recently.

Looking forward to the Post Pix of What Prince Was Wearing While Copyrighting 960 Songs thread. And, of course, the 960 Songs?! Someone Make Me a Mix thread.

Moreso the former.

several of these are duplicates. She's Soft and Wet is the same song as Soft And Wet. She's a Peach is the same as Peach.

The list I was keeping of titles is over 1250 songs. This is just what was registered, but even these are questionable. I doubt there was a song called 'sheet music'. lol

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Here's a list of 393 unreleased songs written by Prince:

http://princevault.com/in...ased_Songs

At 12 songs per album, that's almost 33 albums' worth of material. FYI, princevault.com is probably the definitive source for all information of this kind.

Interesting, obviously we know there are MANY more, a lot of these are released one way or another, not all, especially other artists such as the time, the family, jill jones, vanity 6 appolonia 6, sheila E, carmen electra, chaka khan, etc etc, but a lot of npgmc releaes are not on this list, any particular reason?

Based on the fact that "Pray" appears in this list, "She's Soft and Wet" is also by MC Hammer - it's on the same album as "Pray", and is built on samples from "Soft and Wet".

Pray uses 'when doves cry' sample

Exactly, and Prince got a big piece of it, which is probably why it and "She's Soft and Wet" appear in this list.

True. But not every song that sampled P's music actually had permission to. I always got a kick out of hearing a bit of one of his songs pop up in something. It's interesting that "Heartz of Men" appears in this list, but not "Whatz Your Phone Number?".

Believe it or not, MC Hammer's album was recorded at Paisley Park! so although not directly involved, Prince gave his blessing to the project and fully endorsed the samples used.

2pac was another one who liked to sample Prince a lot. He even did a song where he rapped over a loop from the live version of If I Was Your Girlfriend.

Great point. I didn't even notice that. So this is far from comprehensive.
