Father's Song - New Post up on YouTube

Always loved Father's Song, and when Prince died, decided to sit down, transcribe it as close as I could to the movie, and learn it.

Today I put up a performance of it based on my transcription.

I haven't written out the music in a pretty format just yet (it was first for me to understand, so ties/rests are not standard), but let me know if you'd like it and I'll do so!

There's sheet music for it, you know.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes, there is and I have it. Have not played it in a long time though.

Nice one!

I enjoyed that - oneof my favourite pieces of Prince music (CB)

Out of interest...as someone who has never played piano...if I began to learn with a lesson a week - how long before I could make this my bar trick?

Yeah, that was the main issue if you've ever seen what was published. Thanks for the backup!

Even a good published version probably still wouldn't have his ornaments. I didn't play exactly all of them both due to my ability and because my hands were freezing, but did my best.

Since you've never played, it's tough to give you an estimate, but you can definitely get the base chords and melody in the right hand after a few months of dedicated practice (as a total beginner). It wouldn't sound exactly like this (sounding exactly like this would take quite a while for a true beginner), but it would be cool!

Hard to hear all the nuanced stuff in a bar anyways ; )

I'll post the transcription soon, and if you'd like, I can make a simpler version after.

Yes please!

It is the piece that has always inspired me to learn...so it would be great to have something to take to my lesson.

Thanks!

Really beautiful. Thank you for that. I always loved this tune, and it's amazing how this one expresses a beautiful sadness, while computer blue, with almost the same melody, represents anger and desperation. CB was the track that made me fall in love with his music, and Father Song is its soft counterpart, so I cannot but love it! You played it beautifully.
Edit: I noticed now your name on the org...wink fits perfectly of course.

Sounds great . Of all the fan versıons I've seen on Youtube over the years your version is by far the best and very close to the original. Sounds a lot like the version he played in Atlanta in 1985.

Very touching! This is rsally good, you know.

I always loved this one. The way it's used in Computer Blue is great. From piano to guitar: wow!

Anyway, your version is amazing!

Hey, not long at all actually. I used to take piano lessons and I learned to play it pretty quickly after I started my lessons. It was by far the most complex piece i could play.

You don't even need more than one or two lessons perhaps. You just need to learn to read the music and then it is practice, practice, practice until your fingers remember where to go. And I"m talking about the sheet music version, not anything fancier. But the sheet music version is good.

I actually want to learn to play it again. It's probably been 20 years but I love that song and I loved playing it. There's a site where you can download the sheet music for it for a few bucks.

You have an incredible talent to be able to transcribe and play the music.

.

I think you captured well the beautiful sadness of that piece of music.
