Maybe I'm just like my mother
She's never satisfied...

“Once my mother remarried,” he explained to Rock, “it was during the time period in my life where she had to teach me about the birds and the bees. And I’ve never asked her about this, but I think there was some sort of plan to initiate me heavy and quick. I was given Playboy magazine, and there was erotic literature laying around. It was very easily picked up. It was pretty heavy at the time. I think it really affected my sexualty a great deal.”

It was gone for a long time. Then it mysteriously reappeared. Poof, like magic. lurking

I love these pics and am having a lot of fun with them. Instead of being so sad, this makes me smile. wink

I think a disagreement is in "post ur pics 4" and it has more to do with the "snug fit" pics AKA "Dick Thread" than this thread. At least I think that might be it, could be both.

Yes, I do think THAT is the one the disagreement or issues are with. I can't see why it was this one. Despite the photo-tangent...it is a valid topic for conversation in here (and in the post ur pics 4 - that is a great thread - highfive grouphug to my purple fam in there) but that thread nor this one are not strictly 'look at his 'sugarcane'' cool lol

I came to an early conclusion: he used everything. He seemed so GIGANTIC.

It wasn't until later that I began reading words like "diminutive" -- and I realized that he did have to work harder so people would focus on the totality of him. I didn't know, for years, that he was actually a very small person.

His physicality was interesting. He looked TALL when standing alone or in front of others.
He was gangly. His arms, legs and fingers were long for his totality.

I think he finally came to understand that no one cared about his height. He dated taller women, he appeared onstage with Cee-Lo Green (and looked like a tiny toy guitar player in the "Crazy" video -- so cute!).

Wasn't it Alan Leeds who challenged him to just come out in jeans and a shirt, at a piano? He said Prince seemed frightened by that.

Talent, talent, talent.

Beauty.

It's rare and we were lucky to experience him.

I have to say I really agree with a lot of what you mentioned. I never really thought of him as small (unless he was standing new to someone and it was a jarring difference). His larger than life personality/music - everything, out shone his actual physical height in my eyes. But you are right, he had to do something for people to focus on something other than that, maybe this was one of the ways he did that. I was just reading a 2013 concert review - so 35 years after he's been performing, and the dumb vocabulary-challenged 'journalist' STILL made a point to call him diminuitive, and still somewhere in there had to reference the heels. No wonder these things got to him. 35 years later and they can't let that go? They can't focus on the music, the performance, him as a person? NOPE. Have to throw that back in his face and anyone reading in case they chose to forget that insignificant detail such as a persons height. disbelief

Your rant is completely legitimate! It bothered my too that people would often try to reduce him to short jokes & being some kinda nympho. Dude was lots of things, but brilliant & talented are definitely at the forefront of that list, & it's a shame the focus couldn't stay on the most important things about him.

OK...I have one more thing. Odd lyrics:

From Peach:

"She's so cool and I'm so ugly"

From Lady Cab Driver:

"This is 4 why I wasn't born like my brother, handsome and tall"

WTH, Prince?

Did you really believe you were ugly and/or unhandsome?

Is this why you hid behind the makeup and dandy clothes?

I've never been able to figure it out.

Well, we all know he didn't love his height lol as for the "ugly" comment, he knew he was fine, nobody could preen like him & NOT know it razz but all lyrics aren't necessarily autobiographical, they can just as easily be about general feelings/situations as they can be personal to him. That said, I think even the finest mofos have moments when they wonder how they measure up to other people, especially potential lovers/mates. twocents

hug Thank U - felt a bit rampant there for a moment. And just like you mentioned, there are so many more important things to focus on. it always bugs me how under recognized he seemed to be (in the grand scheme of things, aside from those true Prince friends). This I think is just one of those naggling areas. He gave us everything. Around the clock recording when his muse was at it, not letting his gift go unwasted, playing after shows after already playing full sets, releasing more albums/music than anyone releases in the same amount of time...he deserved so much more in return. disbelief broken

nod I actually have that same mini-moment every time I hear such lyrics from him, and then have the same after thought as Calhoun. Some days one looks in the same damn mirror and has a different thought/reaction. Or could have been hypothetical. shrug That's the mystery I guess.

Prince was not afraid to express his sexuality. He had a mesmerizing stage presence and charisma like no other. I think he expressed his sexuality, the way he expressed himself in his music; he was evolving and using that god-given creative force that he was put on this earth to do. He was very seductive, charming and thought-provoking. Just like the song "Controversy"....am I black or white, straight or gay....Prince said himself early in his career that he was always criticized for the way he dressed and people would immediately think he was "gay". Prince was just being "himself". Later on, he matured and wasn't being so "sexual" anymore, but he never lost his charm! I can't imagine all the personal pain that he went though, with two failed marriages and losing his newborn son, and then another miscarriage. Not to mention, he lost his brother, then both his parents within a 10-year span. That's a lot to go through. I think his strained relationship with his parents was very hard on him. He had family issues, just like anyone else. He was human, just like us. I think he longed for "true love", and came close a couple of times, but he got his heart broken, and he broke some hearts, himself. He toned-down his sexuality as he got older and started dressing more "conservatively". His first love was always music. He poured out his heart and soul into his music and I think he loved women just the same. There is a saying...."To live fully, one must take risks", and we know the one about "its best to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Anywho....I loved Prince then, and now and always will. I think he felt remorse for a lot of things he did. He said himself that he was not proud of things he did in his early years. He said "Don't make the same mistakes I did." He said when he lost his Son, he felt he was being "punished" for choices he made in his youth. That breaks my heart. No, God does not punish us. When we suddenly lose the one's we love, we always blame ourselves, unfortunately. God loves us; he does not make us sick or punish us. I could write a book, but I better stop here! Love you, PRN <3

Well if I remember correctly he was called or nicknamed german shepard, and he was really short, I'm sure a lot of girls scrunched their nose at him and never would ever consider giving it up. But then I'm sure there was a good balance of girls who pampered him just the same.

THIS is where he screwed up in life.

He should NEVER have regretted his past.

His past was farking amazing, and it's what made him the star that he was.

If he had started off with boring R&B releases like he did later in his career, he wouldn't have lasted more than 2 albums.

THIS is why I hate our old buddy Larry and his JW's.
His influence made P regret the person who we grew up to love.

Prince seemed like the kind of guy who was teased a lot in school so no wonder he would have developped some sort of self-esteem issues. At least he didn't get plastic surgery. He was very handsome.

[Edited 7/15/16 20:14pm]

In the sixties and seventies, things were pretty wild. When disco became main stream, gays and straights were partying together in most major cities. Costumes were wild - there were naked go go dancers of both sexes and there were lots of wild orgies in back rooms, hotels and private homes. Of course, guys/gals in the music business were right in the thick of it with alcohol, drugs, groupies etc. It really was an "anything goes" atmosphere ......and this was before Prince. Male performers started baring their skin in the late sixties. I remember male performers in small clubs wearing nothing but bikini underwear. Again, this was before Prince. A lot of that - plus the funk/r&b - Prince used in his performances when he started. Of course, things came to a screeching halt when HIV/AIDS started spreading.

His sex/sacred thing was taken from eastern Tantric New Age philosophies that were popular back in the day.

He found a way to mix it all up and I think he was purposely looking for new marketing angles to give him an edge. Along the way, he grew as a musician, songwriter and performer and he relied less on the shock value. He matured in many ways and he became more elegant and sophisticated with his message and performance. He still loved using shock value when he wanted to. Just MHO smile
