When do I start emptying Prince stuff from DVR?

Okay, so I have one of the those cheap DVRs that can only hold so many hours and I have of course have it filled with Prince stuff. On the day Prince died, I was taping CNN and BET coverage and then when MTV opened the video vaults I started taping those. It was such a horrible night, I just wanted to grab everything I could and then since then there have been so many Video Block episodes on VH1-Classic and of course Under the Cherry Moon, Graffit Bridge, etc. Okay, I got rid of GB but when do you start letting things like this go? I couldn't bear to watch the news coverage from the night of, just like I still cannot read any of the Prince tribute magazines I have sitting by my chair. But all those video blocks, do I keep them, will I watch these videos I have seen hundreds of times in my life? When the new TV season comes on, how will I tape things? This content cannot be transferred in any way that I can think of so when do I start deleting? Any one else have this problem?

Trust me....keep every ounce of it. Box it up and put it in ur attic, your basement, your closet, whatever. I sold some of my CDs and video tapes back in the 90's, and I dread everytime I realize it's out of my hands. Don't let ANYTHING go. Don't wear my regret.

I'm now printing up all the tribute articles and news articles and keeping them in a binder. I may not be able to read them all due to my emotions today, but maybe 5-10 years later, wounds will have healed and I'll be able to read, see, listen objectively and with a fond heart for the one who I consider a 'love of my life', a 'big brother,' and the 'best musician of my lifetime'. KEEP IT ALL!!!

Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

Some of these things are on You Tube (TV specials etc) so might be worth saving it from there and then that may relief some space on the DVDr? It is a pain how now you cannot transfer to other mediums from DVDr.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

We're in an age where anything can be preserved. Think of old home movies to disc, for instance. I don't want to break rules, but you can google anything you want these days.

Same here. I thought they'd be easy to find again if I really wanted them again someday. Nope...

Yes, I dvred a bunch of stuff too and have been wondering the same. I did get rid of anything related to his death, realized I will probably never want to watch that so I deleted coverage from that night and the following days and that opened up some room on my dvr. I even deleted the Purple Rain I taped that weekend because it had his dates on it throughout, but luckily it was reaired not long after without those horrible numbers. Although for some reason I do still have the 20/20 special. And the SNL tribute. Holding on to the video blocks and movies for now. Like you, I still can't bear to look at the tribute magazines, I have two and the last time I tried to read them I broke down in tears so I'm going to leave those tucked away for some time.

Anyway, yeah I think I will hold on to what I currently have on dvr for awhile.

You know, I still have a VHS tape of the Prince Interview from 1985; borrowed it from a classmate in my freshman year of college and never returned it for some reason lost in time. In the old days I could have been taping all of this stuff and hoarding it and saving it. But I go back to the question I keep asking myself. For what purpose? I will always be a Prince fan just like there are still Beatles fans and Elvis fans. But how much of this can I bear to watch right now versus 6 months from now? I have been a Prince fan for over 30 years but I have been more interested in recent years in what he was creating and not what he had already created. I saw all of those videos , hundreds of times. It's like watching my wedding video where my Dad gives this heartfelt speech and I can still hear his voice as if I had only heard it yesterday but it will be five years December since he passed. Death is the ultimate mind @$#&.

Keep the majority of it. The things that you feel you may not be able to find later. Stash it away until you are able to view it in a different light. I did the same when MJ passed. I couldnt watch or read anything. I have only lately been able to do so with a modicum of distance. It was too heartbreaking to do it then. Right now you may be feeling the pain and wanting to toss things to get rid of that pain. Hold on to what you can because you may really want it a year or two from now.

I taped a lot of stuff after Prince passed. You can delete the movies because you should be able to check them out at the library or order them on Amazon. The thing about the video blocks is that they repeat themselves. I watched some of the blocks that I taped with the plan to delete the repeats I just never got around to them. I am keeping my late night tribute with D'Angelo and I will delete the repeats. I'm sure the videos will be replayed on his birthday next year.

I am looking for a way to keep my dvr items.

But don't delete anything with out watching it. Sometimes you find out things you didn't know from watching those show.

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

Thank You Prince

Off load that stuff to your VCR or your current media platform (DVD/Blueray, whatever). I know with my DVR there's an option to tape it to VHS.

I don't think you should leave this up to anyone else. If you want to keep it, keep it. If you want to get rid of it, do that. If you can afford to get a second dvr, do that.

Basically, this one's all you, sweetie. biggrin
