Like Prince who achieved this through his masterful storytelling with music and before the advent of many of today’s modern studio techniques, Andrei Tarkovsky achieved the same through haunting, ethereal, groundbreaking films that were created prior to the advent of computers and modern film techniques.

Both were visionaries who created their own language, textures and atmosphere - touching on the themes of the metaphysical, spiritual, space and time and rain/water.

Both were committed to faith and really believed in love and romantic love between people and the transcendent potential of it.

Both died tragically early in their mid-50’s.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s films have been recently remastered - you may have heard of Solaris.

I have no idea whether Andrei Tarkovsky influenced any of Prince’s work but the parallels between the two are striking.

If you’re interested in Soviet Sci-fi - Solaris (1972) is probably his most famous movie. It was remade in 2002 with George Clooney but the original’s better - in my opinion. It’s based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem and won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix Special du Jury in 1972. It also has levitation scenes (like the trailer).

But many of his movies have won a lot of foreign film awards - Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Stalker, Nostalgia, The Sacrifice, Ivan’s Childhood.

As the films have just been remastered, they’re now being shown in cinemas (eg. in the UK) so you may be able to catch one at local cinema to you.

Ingmar Bergman famously said of Tarkovsky:

"Tarkovsky for me is the greatest (director), the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.”

Hey no worries! I just stumbled on it when I saw they were showing his films at the cinema. When I looked into more I was surprised at the extent of the overlap between them - although the final output is obviously very different.

I remember being blown away by Andrei Rublev. For those who don't know, it's one of those supremely evocative movies with incredible photography and music, you know watching it that a peculiar individual was at the helm. There's been many a wonderfully shot and scored movie, but here you truly have an individual vision.

Beyond the fact they were both so dedicated to their art and hell bent on realizing their vision, I don't think there's that much similarity between the two. I certainly can't see them hitting it off if they met.

Ah, Perfume...what a sweet sentiment. This is true, hence the lyrical line that comes after the one in my signature. Prince had a message. He loved romantic love and sex and wasn't afraid to talk about it without getting embarrassed. But mostly his message was about love. An overall love for people. And for God, or Jehovah, who was his Higher Power. And I. That same sentiment, service. He done good.

Spot on truth about Prince, which is why I think the world misses him so. I know that's why I do. You're right, he was the only artist who spoke in unfettered erospiritual language without shame. God is the source of all forms of love. Prince knew this, and was gifted with the ability to convey this Truth so beautifully through music. I suppose that's why although I'm more than sad that he's gone, I know who he's with. He's with LOVE, and I'm happy about that. He done REAL good.

We could almost stretch it, and say this was a metaphor for Prince and Warner Bros (the metronome boxing one in, restricting time, etc.), but I'm not that smart or that deep... yet...

Wow! I was just reading a bit more about this and The Vatican includes Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" as one of the 45 ‘great religious films’.

I think what is really beautiful is that alot of us are old enough to have lived during the time that both Prince and MJ were at their peaks and that is a great thing no matter what others say.

I don't know about beautiful, but I do know what's best in life. To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. At least according to Conan the Barbarian.
