The 30th anniversary of UNDER THE CHERRY MOON Today July 2nd 2016

4 the 30th anniversary of UNDER THE CHERRY MOON today, July 2nd, here are 6 things 2 do:

1 WATCH the film 4 a very fun & wild ride (It's my favorite Prince film by far!)

2 LISTEN 2 @MDean Prince Podcast Commentary #UnderTheCherryMoon http://podcastjuice.net/t...ommentary/

3 RECORD your own Commentary and share it (If anybody knows Phonte please beg him 2 record one. I miss his movie reviews on youtube.) It would be awesome to hear other commentaries by Prince fans.

4 LISTEN to Parade the soundtrack

5 LISTEN to the Grown Folks Music Inside the Album & Film Podcast https://soundcloud.com/gr...herry-moon

6 things 2 do-LISTEN to my special tribute mix https://www.play.fm/djpol...stoned-273

Any other recommendations?

Under The Cherry Moon is GREAT! I like it waaaaay more than Purple Rain.

This is from the rambling Howard Bloom blog referenced in another post:

When "Under the Cherry Moon" was finished, I got a call from Bob Cavallo and he said "We're showing the movie tomorrow at our 600 seat theater on Sunset Boulevard." It was a test theater, all the people in the audience had little buttons that they could rotate to show how they're responding to a scene. I watched the movie and it was terrific! I came out and I told them so. I thought it was really good.

Later--it could have been anywhere from two weeks to two months--I got another call from California saying "You've got to be out here tomorrow. Prince has made changes in the film. You're not supposed to see it, but if we hide you in our office at night, could you look at it and tell us what you think?" Well, in the first version that I saw, Prince had a happy ending. It was a ending that Warner Brothers insisted he use. Normally, I'm against outsiders dictating to an artist what he can and cannot do, it’s almost always a disaster. But, in this case, the ending worked. When I saw the second version of "Under the Cherry Moon," Prince had gone in the opposite direction. He killed off his character. Why? Because Prince was identifying with God more strongly than he was identifying with himself. He felt that he had to do what God would have demanded: if he (was) a character who was a scamp, who represented his era of sexual freedom, he had to kill himself off. And he did. The movie was pathetic. It was terrible. There was no point in watching it really, except for Kristin Scott Thomas, who was an amazing discovery. So, that's when it all changed, when the voice of Prince's dad took over who Prince was.

interesting reading but I don't know. If his dad/god did take over, it took a long time to take root. Prince wrote scampy songs for another good 12 years and even up to his death he was still writing lyrics on explicit fucking. What song was that "bring it on over here, oh this is different, this is exciting".

the movie is great from a romantic comedy, etc standpoint. i personally prefer it to the other 2 films. i think between most people wanting purple rain 2 and seeing prince as a funny person was too much to handle or whatever. idk but i just know i love the film. prince was cool as shit and hilarious in it. his death was a little dramatic but besides that, it was great.

Love "UTCM"...Saw it in a packed theater the weekend it opened. I wonder what the original happy ending would have been?

a packed theater? I never heard of UTCM packing any theater but glad to hear it. the death scene, was reminiscent of elvis dying in his first movie, the acting was about as bad.

I love UTCM! Yeah its pretty cheesy at times but at least its not as bad as Graffiti Bridge. As for the happy ending, my guess it would of been Mary and Christopher getting married and Christopher giving up his con artist ways. Overall the music was fantastic, the locations were stunning and had so many hilarious lines that it replaced Purple Rain as my number 1 favorite Prince movie

I personally think that is what is so great about this film... At the time... We FINALLY got to see Prince's true self in my opinion... His humor. He was a very very funny guy! Thanks for your comments. I feel the same way you do... Prince was cool... hilarious... Jerome was also hilarious... What more can you ask for?

DarlingKris, YES! The locations were phenomenal! It is definitely my number 1 favorite Prince movie for that reason (the humor and the style)

Watched UTCM at a theatre a couple of nights ago. It was a riot. A lot of the people were friends of fans who had been brought along. I brought a couple of friends and they were wide-eyed, mouths gaping open for much of it. A lot of astounded people yelling "What!?!" at various scenes (Prince crawling around growling at Mary Sharon, Prince drowning a rubber duck and calling it a fascist... etc etc). But even if the enjoyment was mostly from how weird it was, everyone had a good time, and I love it.

How time flies! Never saw it at a movie theater as I was still living overseas and it was never shown at the theaters there. Saw it eventually on home video. I loved it then and love it now-- definitely a guilty pleasure to watch; I still watch it regularly. I own the film on VHS, DVD, and downloaded the film from iTunes. Hope it will get a Blu-Ray release someday.

I love Under The Cherry Moon. I got the chance to see it on the big screen on Thursday and it was a blast. The person that went with me - who is not a Prince fan - said she loved everything about it! I completely agree. It's also way better on the big screen - it just works better - the campy flare smile Most people find it funnier than they expected. That is if they aren't expecting PR#2. Their loss.

I always thought the 30th Anniversary was on the 4th? No difference. Still unreal it's been 30 years already!!

ForeverPaisley,

Where did you get to see it? What state? I got to see in NYC recently on the big screen. I also thought it was the 4th but I'm seeing a lot of posts for today so I thought I had gotten my dates wrong. I actually changed the date from the 4th today to the 2nd. I'm confused myself.

It played at The Rio theatre in Vancouver, BC. The Rio has some serious Prince fans on staff, and they've shown Purple Rain 4x since Prince's passing, SOTT once, and on Thursday (day before Canada Day so everyone had it off), it was a PR & UTCM double feature.

Just a blast.

ForeverPaisley - I was with 3 friends, I think we were probably the giggliest in the threatre (sitting near the back). We should have tried to meet up. Next time. smile

the movie wasn't that bad. in fact, I like most of the movie.

I don't like how Christopher Tracy got killed at the end.

I know that Prince "insisted" on this end for the character

but that really put a downer on the movie for me.

So cool. Would love to see it on the big screen again. Release date was July 2nd and so was the premiere party with the amazing performance. Will never forget it. Such a cool movie in so many ways. Love the music, the orchestrations, the style, the visuals, the comedy, the fun. Thank you Prince.

I posted it in the events here - too bad we didn't link up before hand - but as you say, the Rio is definitely big Prince fans so there will be another opportunity I'm sure.

Absolutely! I love UTCM! I enjoyed the scenery, wardrobe, campiness, the (sometimes corny) comedy and of course, the music. Yeah, and he was cool as shit. It expanded my view of him as an artist.

Oh awesome! Were you the one wearing the Prince jacket? I was in a pink starfish and coffee t-shirt. You guys seemed cool, and the purple glowsticks were BRILLIANT for purple rain. Was so happy to see everyone with their arms up.
