Ugh, I know...if I come across new ones I'll replace them, but I fear we're nearing the end of the post-passing/pre-estate decision "Wild West" period for unreleased Prince stuff. Shame, too...I understand the need to monetize his art (and I always use TIDAL/Amazon links for officially released material), but being able to hear this stuff is really a public good. It belongs in a museum!

New Post: My Love is Forever

One of my running themes with this blog is that Prince wasn't *just* a solitary genius; in some ways, you can look at his early work in particular as a collaborative effort by several key people who worked together to create a "brand" known as "Prince." That will especially come into play with Andre Cymone, but this is an early look at it through his collaborations with Chris Moon.

Unfortunately this will be my only full post this week...I'm super busy and just want to give myself some space to breathe. Hopefully it's substantive enough, though!

Today it's Just as Long as We're Together. Honestly, not my favorite; like I said in the post, it feels more like a proof of concept for Prince as the wunderkind who does it all, rather than a song that works on its own merits. But still a definite "A" for effort. Next I'll be talking about "We Can Work It Out," a sillier and more relaxed song in a similar vein. We'll see if I can get it out before the end of the week.

I know I've seen on the org that this song has its fans. I like it fine, but find it kinda...deliberately lightweight? I can definitely see why it didn't make it on either For You or the 1977 press kit/demo...I dunno, what do you all think? Am I being too dismissive?

I don't know if it is just the fact that they are outtakes, or that the reason I like ´them is that they don't fit well on an album, but I have always (haha) loved Make It Through the Storm, We Can Work It Out and Leaving for NY more than a lot of the whole For You record.

Just wanted to say I am continuing to love these articles. Thank you so much for taking the time to write them. They make for bittersweet reading...I wish he was still around, in the flesh.

I definitely agree with you in the case of We Can Work It Out, which I wrote about today: https://princesongs.org/2...rk-it-out/

I suspect he got in his head on For You, because WCWIO is so natural and relaxed while Just as Long as We're Together (for example) is trying so hard. Still, I'm developing more of an appreciation for the first album now that I'm making myself listen to it in such depth.

Another favorite of mine from For You--though the arrangement, as I note, is a little dated: "In Love"

I think it's an interesting lens through which to view Prince's developing sexual persona, as well as the evolution of the Minneapolis Sound...what do you think?
