People want to talk about "appropriation"

Can we spare a moment for J-Hud stealing Prince's white hoodie?

That woman is dead to me. talk to the hand

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Okay I'm taking this with a grain of sea salt. lol

Janelle & Anthony jacked ass-less pants, and Janelle looked like she was fresh off the Purple Rain Tour. Bilal even whipped out a nipple at one point.

I'm sorry, but that hoodie is a religious artifact. hmph!

And frankly, I didn't see the other stuff (and have no intention of watching it), so whatevs. I just happened to see the picture of J-Hud this morning and was horrified.

The thing that irritates me the most is when people don't even try to put their own spin on something. J-Hud copying the hoodie and Bilal copying Prince measure for measure on The Beautiful Ones is pure asshattery.

I was being serious. The BET tribute thread/sticky went missing. That's why I assumed you posted this thread.

I thought her making it into a dress was her way of putting her spin on it. I had no idea the original was a religious artifact.

I might just be missing something. In all honesty - how is that white hoodie a religious artifact? An artifact is usually defined as something with a historical relevance when it comes to culture. I only remember him wearing it once. He's worn a hoodie type thing before (Purple Rain days comes to mind).

I loved it, and I loved all the other referential things that were done during the various tributes throughout the evening. I thought it was tasteful, and very appropriate. And not for nothing, but Jennifer Hudson killed it with purple rain.

Exactly. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would ever want to hear her sing anything. She is always at one volume. 17. When the max is 10. Twice now she has butchered Purple Rain. Hopefully last night will be her last attempt.

Something tells me she's trying to establish Purple Rain as "hers" for purposes of all Prince tributes. barf

Bruce Springsteen did it better than JH - just my opinion, but peer to peer, he knocked it out of the park.
