At last, someone who likes Shakira's music, what's you favorite album?

Shakira was great before she made the cross over. Her best album is Pies Descalzos (translates to barefeet). Great music and great songwriting.

2. Elton John (A long time favourite of mine)

3. Madonna (As above, although she gets on my nerves at time)

4. David Bowie (Another genius we have lost, I need to get deeper into his volume of work)

5. George Michael/Wham (Again a beautiful voice and a tortured soul)

.

All are behind PRINCE of course

i know you mean jason isbell...i haven't really. i like his stuff with the truckers pretty well, but i find most of his solo stuff a little contrived; and i don't really like HIM very much. he seems a bit of a pretentious prick. not really my taste.

In no order:

Janet

Michael Jackson

Maxwell (if Prince ever had a successor, it'd be him, despite his lack of frequent output)

Culture Club (often dismissed, but took reggae and made it pop)

George Michael (one of the best male voices still alive today)

I have to put in Queen, Annie Lennox, INXS, Christopher Cross (that high tenor voice & beautiful melodies still gets me). I love 70s Yacht Rock. I have a whole Pandora station based on Ambrosia's "Biggest Part Of Me". Barry Manilow gets a huge nod too. Joke all you want, but he can truly write the songs that we all remember, whether you like it or not. James Taylor. Carole King.

I'm not a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac (and I really can't stand Stevie Nick's voice - I know I'm in the minority with that), but I do recognize their incredibly ability to truly craft a song, blend harmonies, and build layers of guitars and keys. I highly respect that with them.

Barry's on my list, too. Second only to Prince. He puts on a great show, too. I actually got to meet him earlier this year and he was incrediby personable.

I had to laugh when you put "I don't want to hear it" lol I totally get it though. R Kelly is very talented and puts out some jams. I will not deny that.

yep..."Stone Jam"(1980), and "Show Time" (1981), are 2 of the greatest albums ever made IMO....Mark Adams monster basslines...the incomparable Steve Arrington on the mic...thats my shit right there...and the Ohio Players during the Junie Morrison years on the "Pain", "Pleasure" and "Ecstasy" albums...Dayton Ohio was once a funk mecca...

P.M. Dawn
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Beegees ( I cheat by having Robins material in there)
Harold Budd
George Michael

Its a crap year, at least Sakamoto survived cancer - Prince and now A.C. (Prince Be) from P.M. Dawn (who essentially is that name but always took a family member along for the ride and had two different duo arrangements) - Prince was young - thats hard enough with him being established as the best all round musician to have graced the planet certainly in my lifetime BUT regarding P.M. Dawn, Be had set backs like feeling a whole music community rejected him after KRS One and then was promptly seriously ill in the early 2000s when he was in his 30s. speaking to him, seeing him rehearse etc post stroke and hearing the material he was managing with seriously impaired vision and partial paralysis put into perspective what *could* have been and then he managed to tour till 09 but didn't release new material (his cousin who was tagging along did, but its nothing like P.M. Dawn) and then got to the stage where he just watched his poor body break. listen to a track like 'As dissappointing as your mercy is" for a window into his soul.

I'm glad to see a few other mentions of him here in this thread on a Prince forum, he would love that.

This is too damn tough to think of a solid top 5. I do have a top 3 that is very much solidified and a ton of other musicians/groups I'm a huge fan of too.

Prince and Stevie were 1A/1B for the longest, but Prince wins out for me. He's just more versatile and has a deeper catalogue to me.

For me it's ....

Prince

Stevie Wonder

Outkast & the whole Dungeon Crew (love early Goodie Mob and Organized Noize Production team)

after that I'm not sure, but I am a big fan of...

the Cure, David Bowie, Beck, My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo, Radiohead, Weezer, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Eddie Vedder & Pearl Jam, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Donnie Hathaway, Bilal, D'Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, Scarface, Common, older Kanye West, the Roots, Bob Marley, Sly Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic, Sade, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, and many, many more.

Some newish artists I've really been digging are Toro y Moi, Mac Demarco, and Kendrick Lamar.
