What are your top 5 favourite artists beside Prince?

We've had a thread like this before, but with so many new members coming in, I would really like to know everybody's favourites. (So mods, please don't relocate this to the non-Prince forum.)

Anyway, here's mine:

James Brown
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
Sly & the Family Stone
Kate Bush

Wat's yours?

In no order:

Janet

Michael Jackson

Maxwell (if Prince ever had a successor, it'd be him, despite his lack of frequent output)

Culture Club (often dismissed, but took reggae and made it pop)

George Michael (one of the best male voices still alive today)

I have to put in Queen, Annie Lennox, INXS, Christopher Cross (that high tenor voice & beautiful melodies still gets me). I love 70s Yacht Rock. I have a whole Pandora station based on Ambrosia's "Biggest Part Of Me". Barry Manilow gets a huge nod too. Joke all you want, but he can truly write the songs that we all remember, whether you like it or not. James Taylor. Carole King.

I'm not a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac (and I really can't stand Stevie Nick's voice - I know I'm in the minority with that), but I do recognize their incredibly ability to truly craft a song, blend harmonies, and build layers of guitars and keys. I highly respect that with them.

For me it's always been Prince followed (quite far behind) by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. The final two places vary. Let's just fill them with two new acts this week: Lianne LaHavas and The Weeknd. I'll probably replace them with John Coltrane and Miles Davis next week, though.

Jimi Hendrix
Bob Dylan
David Bowie
Arcade Fire
Michael Jackson

Honorable mention goes to Amy Winehouse (always adored her), Frank Ocean (still waiting on that album tho), Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper (I heard he got great reviews for his new album Coloring Book), The Clash, and so many more.

Jill Scott - dynamic range; incredible storyteller

The Isley Brothers - absolutely silky ballads; a very funky rock/r&b hybrid

Michael Jackson - Jackson 5 classics, Thriller, Bad, hypnotic live dancer

Sade - "an aural massage"; quite simply relaxation for the ears

Maze - straight forward, feel good, sing-along music

Yeah, I know some people dismiss atonality outright, but I don't think anyone can argue its merits to the progression of art and sound. Art should push the envelope and uproot the foundations, and those three definitely did that... Plus I like a nice active listen and that style of music gives a lot to pay attention to.

I don't have many other favorites besides Prince, but I would say Janet Jackson is kind of a favorite (old stuff) and I've gone through phases of being really into Bruno Mars, John Mayer, Garth Brooks, Amy Winehouse, maybe some others. Prince has always been and will always be my #1!
