I Love You More Than I Did When You Were Mine

How many of you bailed out when the albums weren't hits? How many times did you say it don't sound like Sign O the Times? How many times did you say he needs Wendy and Lisa? How many of you stopped buying the music?

Who moaned when the NPGMC was around? Who fussed about LotusFlow3r.com? Who got upset when Prince shut down sites using his likeness in vein?

I had a conversation with a person who was a bigger fan than I am and I told them that people won't understand him until he is gone.

How many now understand what that lyric means now?

I love you more than I did
When you were mine.....

I get what you're saying. Yes, Prince had to tolerate a lot of criticism and being misunderstood while here on earth. And like the clueless people we are, most of us didn't appreciate him enough until he was gone. Maybe that's part of our depression - guilt. We didn't love him enough while he was here. And he ha fled it incredibly maturely. I respect him so much for it.

But he had people who DID know, and that might've and probably was enough for him.

As for the song, it was on a very early album of his do unless he was prophesizing, it might've been about a girl. It was also written by SONGWRITERS
GENE NELSON, ROBERT BYRNE (sorry for the caps I copied and pasted). Is gene Nelson related to Prince?

Lol maybe Gene is Prince.

Is his birth "certificate" REALLY legit? Perhaps the whole damn thing has been a play. wink
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

i never bailed, some albums I liked better than others but i always followed him. If I'd had more money, i'd have been to paisley park and met him.

I found emancipation and NPS a bit meh. Some really good songs on both but overall they bored me. Then when the Internet thing started I was at uni, didn't have a decent computer or the income to subscribe - which maybe if I hadn't already taken a step away I woulda tried to do. I didn't even have a credit or debit card so I was kinda on the out.
.
For me at least falling out of love and then back in love with him has been part of my journey and growth and discovering lots of other music.

I wasn't exclusive to just Prince's music over this 34 year journey.

I was a Prince fan at the birth of hip hop and during the Big 80's. I started to understand the difference between what was trendy and glam to what was universal as far as music was concerned. Prince's music may have not returned to a pre Lovesexy level but it never "fell off".

Some people are just now buying Prince's music after a 10/15/20 year lay off because he wasn't marketed to them.

hip hop and grunge pretty much wiped out the superstars of the 80's. Springsteen, MJ, Prince and Terence Trent D'arby had a change of fortunes around that time. For TTD his brilliant symphony or damn was tragically ignored. George Michael didn't make it either. One reason being is that guys like them were stuck in their ways and would have looked foolish trying to rap anyway. George Michael and MJ were so inflexible in what they did that they didn't even try to give different types of names to their albums, thriller-bad-dangerous-history-, faith-older-patience. As for Prince, he did try hip hop and his fans hated him for it.

Truth is though, that Prince, from early in his career didn't want pop fans. He said in interview that he wanted fans who would be with him inspite of whether he was on the radio or not. He did have an ambiguous relationship with sales and radio play. But he was a man of his word, he intentionally cut out the phony purple rain fans with his next several albums until lovesexy didn't even go gold, hence the worst seller of his since Dirty Mind. Then, when he felt a little to irrelevant he would complain and/or mount a comeback which he always was capable of. The thing of the last 20 years or so is, I don't think he could make a hit if he wanted to and it had nothing to do with the quality, he'd just lost touch. Someone on here said the the most beautiful girl in the world was his last hit, i was stunned and thought "you know, it's true". he never really had a big single after that even through the musicology/3121 triumphs.

I really hope that the people who dogged him out repeatedly over the years on insignificant bullshit are taking a long hard look at themselves right now.

I know in my heart that I always loved and supported him, I think he knew too and that gives me a certain level of peace. I personally have nothing to feel guilty about.

People had actual consumer grievances about a lot of these things you list. Taking money off people up front for a product that is not delivered is not "getting upset" or "moaning". His death doesn't erase poor decisions and questionable business activities. Also, long time orgers clearly never "bailed" when the albums weren't hits - you know who bailed? The people who blew up social media with #princerip messages, bought a couple of tracks off itunes and then forgot all about it. No one here bailed when the sales flagged, the fans are the people who didn't bail - the fans like on here bought the all the albums even if they didn't like them because they support the artist.

If I had my way, we'd have remastered and expanded albums, vault releases, a platform where ALL of his music would be available instead of being out of print for years, we wouldn't have had DRM'ed WMAs, you wouldn't have had to solve a riddle to access a website, etc.

.

I've asked this question countless times: do you really think this was as good as it ever was going to get? You really think there isn't any room for improvement?

.

LOL @ "insignificant bullshit". Yes, let's just pretend there isn't a looooong list of questionable business practices.

Prince didn't always do or say or make things that I liked, his death doesn't change that. And that doesn't mean that he's not my favourite musician of all time and it doesn't mean that I'm not sad that he's gone. But Prince certainly shouldn't be exempt from criticism.

I wasn't around for LotusFlow3r.com but I think it's perfectly understandable that people were pissed off at stuff like that, they kinda got fucked over by it.

I've been on board the entire time...since 78-79
It was always kinda exciting to see what he was going to do next, cuz ya never knew!
Was a fun journey...everything Prince seemed to do was not expected.
Think that is why his passing has been so difficult sad

I'm talking about the people here who criticised every thing he did.

People who had real grievances don't apply but there were people wanted above and beyond what was actually promised. I got EVERYTHING that I ordered and was promised by the websites.

Whatever poor decisions that were supposedly made were his and he owned them.

Now in death there will be no poor decisions because lots of money will be made. You are going to get exactly what you wanted but HE will not be here. That album HE should have released will be for sale. That Concert will be on DVD. That song will be on ITunes.

But you will never hear that guitar live.

You will never hear those keys on the piano.

OK, time to tread carefully on this thread...it is very sensitive

-

Prince is my Don...my go to guy...my connection to most of how/what I feel & think

-

I love his artistry, poetry that resonates...ne...encapsultes my life

-

BUT...I do love BVH

-

I am not going to take back some of the complexities of my - frankly - one-sided relationship with a millionaire superstar who strangely shaped our lives....yet never had any personal meaningful relationship with.

-

Prince wished to create an illusion

-

And he did very successfully

-

So...personally...I will love him...but not for him per se...but for the idea of him

-

And because there is empathy in his early years...and inspiration thereafter

-

BUT even more than that .... Songs...music ... dancing ... playing ... business ... collaboration ... work ethic ... imagination ... fashion ... belief

-

All that I take as inspiration

-

So thank you Prince...never knew you...you were human...and ruddy talented!

-

Miss you...yes...love you...yes

-

Is Prince above criticism? - Or to expel anger towards those that have criticised?

-

Probably too early to get into that shit

-

Put some music on and enjoy it cool

~Shakalaka!~..... ~Mayday!~

Good god, dude. Prince was a brilliant artist and we are all poorer for his loss. Please don't act like his death somehow evens the score. He was an awful businessman. His arrogance was palpable when it came to his fans. But nobody up in this thread, or ever in these Prince.org and beyond threads, is the enemy.

Counter viewpoints are what make places like the Org, Amp, PML, Housequake, etc have a purpose. If it were a vacuum where everyone was remora'd up to Prince's butthole, it would be the most boring shit ever. Thank the stars for people who have always called Prince on his shit or we never would've had songs like "PFUNK" or "Laydown" or "No More Candy 4 U" or a countless string of other times Prince responded to negative criticism for shitty actions.

glue here lol I was a little slow to pick up some of the later albums (like, not day of release, there used to be a time when that was UNTHINKABLE!), but with life that rabid energy can ebb & flow. I've been more rabid for him than not, but I never strayed. He's my dude heart

heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Who said they were making it up?

I sided with the people who didn't get there stuff because I've ordered things from Amazon and they didn't arrive.

There were some who went on a personal vendetta against him like Prince decided to pick them out and not send it to them. His shipping departemnt had a problem with the shipping vendor not him personally.

I don't agree that one has to say YES and agree with or like everything (anyone) does to say they appreciate them.
.

I LOVE and appreciate my brothers, but we but heads on things in life, and there are things they do I do not like and will never like. And if they die before me I still won't like those things. That doesn't mean I don't love or appreciate them.

.

Same with Prince. I've always appreciated him, there were times when I just wasn't feeling certain periods, certain albums, certain looks etc There were things he's done that I absolutely did not like. But I still appreciated Prince.

.

I think people have the misconception that one must say YES to all a person does/doesn't do in order to say they appreciate or love them.

.

I've known people who were on their sick bed or death bed who hated that the people that visited stopped being who they were because of the current situation. They wanted their friends/family to be the people they always were and give them full and honest interaction.

I lurked around here off and on for years before joining. I had such mixed feelings about this place because of the mean shit people were saying about the person the site is dedicated to. I was afraid to officially be a part of that. Personally, I was a huge from the early 80's into the 90's but at some point I just wasn't digging much what he was doing. I only marginally followed him for several years. I started paying attention again 2 or 3 years ago when I heard about the upcoming AOA and PE and the rest is history. I was on board again, even more than before. Going back and giving the stuff another chance that I had passed on earlier has been an amazing journey. While I regret it didn't happen sooner, I also believe that the time just wasn't right for me for a few reasons until then to truly understand and appreciate Prince's vast prolific output. And I'm glad I didn't feel compelled to come on here and dog him during the "off" years especially knowing he had access to this site as well.

It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN
