Book Recommendation Please!

I am currently reading Prince: The Man and His Music by Matt Thorne. I have also bought Let's Go Crazy by Alan Light (but haven't started it yet).

I like Thorne's book, though I do find it jumping around a bit confusingly. Are there other books that take a look at Prince, his music, its impact, and all that that is non-conspiracy-theory-ish, based on actual facts with fact-based conjecture, etc., that I can add to my list?

Thanks!

As others have mentioned recently, Dave Hill's "Prince - A Pop Life" is a good read. It has interviews with former band members and talks about his impact on the local and national music scene. "Inside The PurpleReign" by Jon Bream is cool too. Tons of great photos.

I'll second Dave Hill's book. It only covers the first ten years. Obviously Per Nielsons book 'Dancemusicsexromance The First Ten Decade' too. Really good writers. More heatfelt and focused on a period of time.

.

I would NOT recommend Liz Jones book or Matt Thornes though. Or anything released after 21.04.16. All bollocks.

I've not read Toure's book yet, but I want to.

DanceMusicSexRomance Prince: The First Decade by Per Nilsen

Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince by Alex Hahn

Prince: A Pop Life by Dave Hill (and 80s book that was quite popular and still a good read)

Skip Liz Jones' Purple Reign book. All that heifer did was copy quotes & stories from other sources. (Half the book is based on the Oprah interview, without one credit to it.)

There's one book about the music behind the mask or something. It was one of the worst thing I'd ever read. I took it back after a chapter and a half.

Thank you everyone! I am actually watching Slave Trade right now. I find it fascinating, and there are a ton of contributions from band members and other insiders during the time period that the battle was ongoing. I am pleasantly surprised as well that they go well beyond the settlement with Warner Brothers into Prince's prescience about the coming digital music era and what that would do to smash the old record label model. They spend a brief period of time as well talking about how he destroyed the tour and concert promotion model during this period as well.

Possessed was a really good read. I always wanted J. R. Taborelli to write a book on Prince though....his Michael Jackson biography was great. But Alex Hahn's book was very interesting. I can't stand biographies when they are all fluff.

I think Andrew Morton would be a good choice. Taraborelli is good, and he really had an inside track on all things Jackson. I enjoyed The Music & The Madness, as well as Morton's book on Madonna.

Taraborelli is a fanciful writer, he likes to embelish certain things. I've got his Diana Ross book too. He write like he was a fly on the wall sometimes. Conversations between two individuals he wouldn't have had access to, actions taken. He couldn't possibly know about some things he writes about.

.

I hope he's not got a Prince book on the horizon. lol

I like Toure generally as a commentator. Seems, to me, to be a pretty grounded guy whom I wouldn't think would just make stuff up. But the reviews of his book - yikes. Scathing. The jury's out for me on that one.

I was never interested in Ross enough to read that book about her. The thing is, MJ hated that book about Ross, yet the Jacksons and Taraborelli were friends for upwards of 4 decades. He did have great inside acces to conversations, etc. It's why I sort of dug his book on MJ. He was close to MJ. I do consider him a higher level of expertise on the Jackson clan. As far as other people, I'm not sure who he's close with, but he was definitely a friend of the Jacksons. Here's an old pic of the two:

As far as Prince goes, I don't think he really has enough beyond what many of us already know to write something new and intereesting. It's why I've strayed away from books after DMSR or Possessed. I'd be more interested to have a book full of all recordings, dates, tour dates, after shows - that sort of thing that we had in The Vault (which I've never read) and DMSR. I do like Alan Light's writing (I remember his Vibe interview with Prince being a punk, "Nell's son. Who is that?" NELSON YOU FUCKER.) So I need to read his book on Purple Rain.
