FALLINLOVE2Nite - the hit that never was

I will still never understand the whole mess up with Fallinlove2nite. It's easily Prince's most commercial "hit" sounding song in years, was featured in that New Girl episode but...was it available to purchase upon the show airing? No. Just bizarre...but just another example of Prince doing things his way, even if they make no business sense whatsoever. Shame - could have been a pretty big hit for him. I would have liked to have seen him have another recent big chart success singles wise sad

I dont mind this song but to be honest I think it may have been a little "cheesy" to be a big hit - JMHO

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Come on. Boring lyrics, boring chord progression, pedestrian production. This is something he probably wrote in 5 mins. The only thing thing that almost kinda made it interesting was Zoey and he edited her out anyway. A true duet on a real song would have been nice since she does have a nice voice.

And that's why it would have been a hit wink

I think it's a very strong song that would have crossed over if it had been released when the show aired.

And her voice is not for me.

I actually heard it a lot on some of the youth-driven pop radio stations and in stores like Old Navy at the time...

The response here and on Twitter was incredibly strong after the episode aired, and I think seeing such a strong response was the impetus for Prince doing a one-off single release deal with LA Reid at Epic Records.

Unfortunately it was another 6 weeks before the song was available to purchase, which is a lifetime in the pop world these days.

It certainly would have done a lot better if it was available at the same time the show was broadcast.

It was the most relevant thing he'd done stylistically in years. I've played it to non-Prince fans who tend to like "cheesy" music - and they loved it. It was a great opportunity totally missed by its non-availability following the show airing.

If only I could get a legit promo CD of it - it's being sold on eBay and Discogs by the same person but it's a fake sad

I feel the same as you do about TMBGITW. Still, it made #1!
