There was a long courtship, started dating in '78, got exclusive in '80, got engaged in '81, made a life commitment by '82, had a couple of breakups, went our separate ways, but they never lasted long, I always came back, gave up trying to leave by '98, he could do whatever he wanted after that I didn't care I knew I was here to stay.

"Soft & Wet" was on the radio when I was HELLA YOUNG, I always liked the singles & he was like no one I'd ever seen before - I dug him as a kid! 1999 was my first secret purchase but I'd say his hooks were firmly in me in with Controversy in 1981. I had to sneak listens of my sisters copy, Do Me Baby could only be played at a whisper falloff So I was already nuts by the time PR hit (I was 13), & I started collecting as much as my allowance would let me, & was very proud of my tiny back-catalogue lol

Lol at do me baby being only played at a whisper lol

I would have been in soooo much trouble!! lol My parents wouldn't let my sis put the poster up from that album falloff & they straight laughed at me when I BEGGED to go to the PR concert hammer

Lol I always knew do me baby was powerful I saw a clip of prince performing it at the capital theater I believe and as purple rain put it the kid was in rare form that night , he was feeling it I thought for a second someone would have to throw cold water on him! To cool him down! Lol

1983. Just prior to my 14th birthday.

I heard Little Red Corvette on the radio here in the U.K and I was hooked. Got the 1999 album for my 14th birthday that year and there began 33 years of buying every new Prince album that became available. I'd love to say that back in '83 I knew that Prince was about to explode and become a worldwide sensation and pretty much be the star of the 80's, but the truth is I had no idea. I just knew I loved his music.

Had to be 2008. I just remember my cassette of Purple Rain helping me through my severe social anxiety period. I had heard some hits and Around the World in a Day prior, but, that was when I became a fan for life.

I find it heartening that new generations of fans come along and discover this amazing catalogue of music. Excellent choice of first album to go for btw

I'd been aware of him - and a fan - since circa 1981, but I can remember turning on the radio one day in (it must have been) 1985 and hearing a song and thinking "what and who is that". I'm pretty sure it was Paisley Park (the song); and when I found out it was Prince ... if I hadn't been a fan already, that would have made me one. As it was, it cemented it.

1986 first album Parade. In the same year I got Around The World In A Day audio cassette.

Maybe I can set the "prince year" in 1987 when I got the Sign "O" the Times live VHS and the Black Album Bootleg LP.

1985... Turned 11 that year. Already had jumped on board late in '84 with 'Purple Rain,' but 'Around the World' was the first album I got when it was brand new. Plus over the course of '85, started catching up on the pre-'Purple' albums - some on vinyl, some on cassette. I still remember sitting in the backseat on a roadtrip, watching my parents react to "Let's Pretend We're Married" which I had slipped onto mix tape. "Do you hear what this person is singing, Charles?" - I can still hear my mom asking my dad that.

1990 - I was 15 and heard Lovesexy - I know it's a cliche but It really was a moment like love. I listened to it 5 or 6 over a few months and I was hooked.

1990 to 2016 - constant in my life cry

Thanks, I am probably one of the younger ones on here and with his music so hard to get unless you pay for it, I kinda put it off a bit.

I knew SOTT was one of his most critically acclaimed based off reviews I read so I went for that.

I know I signed up after he died but I truly loved his music before that, honest! razz

That would be 1990. I had purchased Batman when released and I tripped on it the whole year, but it's only in Summer 1990 that I decided to purchase more Prince and see. I got Purple Rain and GB in August 90 and from the moment I heard PR I know I wanted to hear all the other albums. By June 1991 I had them all.

Sad to admit this, but as a young kid, I was really into Madonna. In 1984, I got a cassette copy of Purple Rain, and that sucked me in. But, saving my lunch money for a week to get Dirty Mind and listening to that for the first time solidified his music as a staple in my life. I still remember very vividly listening to that album for the first time, with headphones on, how much it just affected me.

2004 and 2nd row seats to the Musicology tour in Omaha, NE was reaffirmation as well!!!

1984, I was 11 and saw Purple Rain and then I think it was my aunt that bought me the professionally recorded 1985 Syracuse show on VHS. I probably watched it over 100 times literally, some parts I just watched over and over again. Then I got Sign O the Times the movie/concert and I watched that all the time. Still love it. In 1988 my aunt took me to see the Lovesexy concert in Chicago and we had awful seats, like last row practically and I could hardly even see him. She had binoculars and I was able to use them for a few minutes at a time. She made us leave before it was over saying he was the most vile man she'd ever seen or something like that. Of course, that made me like him that much more!!

I liked his music in the early 90's and asked for the Purple Rain CD on Christmas 1995 but I truly became a fan when I saw him and Mayte on Oprah in 1996. I went out and bought Emancipation the same day and still listen to it today. I loved that era. He was happy, creative, funny and open.
