Lighter Note: Prince's music as romantic deal breaker?

Many cherry moons ago, I was on a first date with an extremely attractive woman. Over dinner, the subject of music arose. To make a long story short, she professed hatred for Prince. Once these words struck my ears, I knew the evening was over, not to mention the possibility of a second date. I remember thinking, "What kind of person are you?" The evening went downhill from there. As Prince sings on "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker," "right then I knew I was through." I soon discovered that we had very little in common and I never touched base with her again. On the flipside, the woman to whom I am related by marriage, enjoys Prince (doesn't quite love him) and respects his music. To be honest, when I first saw her, Prince's "Hot Thing" started playing in my head. I took that as a good (hot) thing. Has anyone else ever used Prince as a romantic litmus test?

Not entirely in the prerequisite phase but I can say there is a definite difference in relationships where my partner was a fan vs. being in different or down right didn't like him.

In fact I don't think anyone I've been with has really been a fan. They either said oh yeah he's good, I have his greatest hits- or they didn't know anything about him.

Could be why I am still single.

I think I am pretty close to taking my my love for him back underground as some of the sh!t that's being said now is just atrocious. The shade from all these people who act like they loved him all this time is guilt for not taking him seriously. Esp in the 90s.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Since I was a kid I mainly played/watched him when alone. Occasionally i would with friends who liked him to one degree or another. I like lots of artists so it wasn't a prob. But mostly i just kinda kept him 2 myself. Everyone who knows me well, knows I'm a 'fan'. Boyfriend's have been pretty cool. I've been teased in a lighthearted way but nothing serious. Maybe because I haven't rammed it down anyone's throat & laugh when they tease me.
"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Not quite a romantic story: But I posted a big note about Prince yesterday on my Instagram, and Facebook. Every time I've written about Prince since April 21, I've purposely written in Princebonics. Some dude, 22 years old, came along, and said "Dude - to be are for? Hard to read."

.

"You obviously don't know Prince."

"No, I don't."

"<o> no."

"I never got into him much."

.

I didn't defriend him, but I might have to unfollow his posts from now on. hahaha

No amore of mine is required to love or like Prince.

However, it's so much easier to dig him too. If I met someone that outright hated him, it would not go much further.

I remember michael spinks, the great boxer say that he loved Pizza and wouldn't even date a woman who didn't love pizza. It does say something about compatibility. There are a few things that I would consider deal breakers, one, if a woman doesn't like cats, then I wouldn't have nothing to do with her, two if she doesn't like Elvis she's not worth my time. Prince? I never knew too many women with strong feelings one way or the other for him so i don't know. but the point is, a persons likes do tell you a lot about them. People that don't like cats are usually manipulative and controlling and hate cats because they are independent, for example.

Yes, to a degree. I always make it a point to ask guys to name 2-3 Prince songs that remind them of me. The response is key: "Purple Rain" because I have on purple nail polish?- no. "Little Red Corvette" because my favorite color is red?- no." This shows a complete lack of understanding of basic song lyrics and limited muscial awareness-to put it mildly.

Also my age- 40+ he should have grown up on Prince and have a better concept of women at this point. "Forever in My Life"- yes. even if it's not really true- he's trying to get somewhere with those lyrics smile "Eye Hate U" -lololol

Being with a man who could not find any song .. not even one thing by Prince they enjoy was always a dealbreaker for me. Now oddly, I never wanted someone who was a big fan of Prince, he just needs to appreciate him and like some of his songs lol I don't know, something about a man that really really loves Prince that sort of turned me off. Odd but true!

Have U had your + today?

If the girl said "I appreciate his talent, but that's not usually my kind of music", that would be OK.

If the girl said "Prince?! Ugh, he sucks!!" then that's obviously completely different.

Luckily, my wife liked him then and likes him now. I just have to be conscious that not every person I know wants to hear his music or hear about him 24/7.

I don't think there are really Prince haters, sure there are people that aren't fans but if they're like "he SUCKS" they're probably just hiding their lack of knowledge of his work tbh

No but when I took my then girlfiend to see Graffiti Bridge- me being a mega Prince fan at the time- I was extremely embarassed by it's sheer awfulness. It was the only time in our relationship where I felt insecure!!! LOL

13 years ago, my husband (then boyfriend) asked me if I like Prince on our very first date. My reply: "Who's that?".

He almost died.

Thankfully I have rectified my terrible indiscretion since then. I'm just glad he gave me a chance lol

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart?
How will U know if I'm even in the right key
If U make me stop before I start?

One day I'll share my full story. In short, the shallow dislike towards every single Prince song by my partner turned out to be an indicator of deeper shallow values that proved to be irreconsilable lol
