Honor Prince...Buy A Guitar. DO IT NOW!

.

Another thread here got me thinking.

.

How can you repay that skinny mother fucker with the high voice who gave us so much musical joy? Easy. Buy yourself a guitar and give musical joy to others and to yourself.

.

Yes, to master a guitar takes a loooong time.

.

But to just kick around with punk abandon, guitar can be learned in a matter of days. If you want to be Jimi Hendrix on guitar, good luck. If you simply want the joy of playing music on guitar, that can be achieved in a week. No fooling.

.

Yes, much of Prince music on guitar is tough as hell. I've been playing for 25 years and I still am befuddled by the majority of his stuff. But there are some Prince tunes that you can easily jam along with after only a week or two of guitar practice. A song like "17 Days" is really just one chord. "The Cross" is two. You could be playing that song in just two days. And "7"? Man, you could play that after just two hours with your guitar.

.

And don't complain about price. Real good guitars are cheap nowadays. Today's $150-$200 budget guitars (Epiphones, Squiers) are way, way better than expensive guitars of yesteryear.

.

Folks, GET YOURSELF A GUITAR!

That's a wonderful way to remember Prince. To honor Prince. To enjoy Prince music.

best advice.. when buying a guitar .. if your intention is to learn.. just make sure your guitar is properly set up by a guitar tech at a music store.. that means. you want the strings to be set on low action.. and light strings .. it will save your fingers of being punished at you learn chords LOL trust me

I just bought the new DSI OB-6 synth mainly because of Prince and his 80's sound. Would have never sunk that much cash on a synth but know it will be worth it.

I just bought a new pedal for my strat and decided to learn Bambi! There's a really good lesson on YouTube, however, he's moving too fast for me. Care to help? Lol I'd pay to learn it.

After waking up and feeling so so sad again...I read this thread. AMAZING!! I've always wanted to play guitar. I drunkenly bought one when I was 19 but didn't stick with it because i didn't like the callouses it was making on my fingers (silly girl). I still have it. Your thread is positive and inspiring. I am going to learn to play some stuff. I'm going to try to do something positive and creative to honour Prince and the rest of the purple family. Thank you for this thread 💜💜💜

This thread has really caught my attention.

Has just about brought tears to my eyes.

You know I've been thinking the past few weeks about covers and you know well that Prince would not want you to do his songs he really honestly would be telling you to do your own music find your own sound because that's what Prince himself was all about.

OK so my compromise for that idea is to fully embrace sharing Prince's music with others with yes a few of his songs that meant the most 2 U and what best way to play it is with your own hands and not playing it off a CD for somebody. True funk soldier are what we should be. It's up to us. It's all about us at this point.

It truly is.

I am a songwriter and have melodies and songs going through my head all the time and all of my life as Prince has been in it, I've wondered I wonder what Prince has got going on in his mind right now. I always knew he must be moving on to some new idea. But that has ended. He will never have another new idea.

So it is up 2 u. So much negativity in music on the radio these days. It's so important to let people find joy in life, and music is a wonderful gateway to find that happiness. When you make that music yourself, and when you play that music yourself with your own hands. So thank you very much for this post. It is an extension of what I have been thinking these past few weeks. If I can help any let me know.

Everything.
Is U

Already ahead of ya!

I got another guitar before Prince left us. I wanted this sweet black and gold one that I saw on the wall at Guitar Center; they sold that one, though. So I got another black one.

I got my eye on a Marshall amplifier. Can't wait to start playing!!!!!!!!!

Those salesman will do their best to get you to spend moolah. And they won't understand why Prince led you to guitar. The gear heads in music stores still think Prince is a gay disco performer.

.

Just get yourself a Squier Affinity Series Telecaster Special Electric Guitar in Butterscotch Blonde. That guitar would be a great first guitar for a Prince fan.

A) you can get one for under $200, and

B) yes, it is the same guitar (more or less) that Prince used -- a Tele copy.

Buy online and get yourself those 10% off deals.

.

You can get this guitar and an amp for about $230!

Any suggestions for guitar with skinny neck for small hands? I tried playing a guitar once but the neck was too wide for my hands to reach certain chords. I need some music therapy to get me over my depression of Prince's and my mother's deaths. Thanks.

Those Telecaster copies like the one above have slim necks. Fender/Squier guitars have thin necks.

If you want an acoustic guitar with a slim neck get an Ovation.

.

And, yes, time spent working with an instrument is good therapy for hard times.

Just wanted to say that I spent a lot of time today with my guitar and singing. I'm trying to play The Cross. Loving it! Thank you for suggesting this. Even my husband (who isn't a Prince fan) is learning it with me. (I also heard my little boy playing it by ear - copying what he'd been hearing us doing). It made me so happy. Thank you again for suggesting this, you've really inspired me x

Buy a used squire, and sell it for the same price eventually when you want an upgrade. After a while you'll notice that it's not worth paying 200 usd for a guitar if your going to have to triple the amount of money spent on adjusting and fixing it over a couple of years. If you are perfectly satisfied with playing as is, then it'll probably be good enough for you.

My new years resolution was to teach myself how to play guitar, so I bought a basic fender accoustic. A couple of weeks later i went and found a very nice white Fender Telecaster that I picked up. I bought most of the apps that help you along. Of course im trying to learn every Prince song I can. I recommend you pick up the TABS app. It has a ton of songs that are pretty easy to learn.

For those of you learning I highly recommend justinguitar.com

Excellent video tutorials and books. Big website and YouTube presence. No Prince though due to copyright bollocks. He's just started a funk tutorial if that interests you. Bit advanced for complete newbies mind you as timing and technique is paramount.

This is a really great idea. Some orger who is advanced-level on guitar should start their own youtube channel teaching guitar with Prince songs. I'm sure most here would learn some cool riffs in no time. wink

Great thread. In honor of P I'm going to gather up all of my old and dusty BOSS pedals (that he used) and make a "P pedalboard". He was the reason why I used them..just hope my Marshall likes them. I'm also going to re-mod my purple Charvel Superstrat with his "Cloud" setup (EMG pickups). I liked his 2004-2009 era Strats so that's the vibe I'm going for.

Prince inspired me to pick up the guitar years ago and I continue to play now. His songs aren't easy to play so it could put off a beginner, but what a wonderful way to pay tribute to the man.

On a seperate note, I've always fancied buying myself a Cloud Guitar. Any Cloud owners in here?...and any advice on getting one?

Count me out on that. I've been playing guitar for 25 years. I'd need another 250 before I (or most others) can play Prince like Prince.

.

I did point out that there are some Prince songs that are easy to play on guitar. But that number is pretty small. Most of his stuff is pretty darn advanced. And his rhythm playing is about the best there is. Only a top level guitarist can do what he does.

.

Take "Purple Rain" for example. Just four chords. But those four - particularly the last one - I've even seen Wendy herself strugle on that one in live performance video.

.

Folks, yes, get yourself an electric guitar. Take some time and learn how to play.

But do not expect to be Hendrix or Prince. Those kind of cars don't pass you every day.

Prince guitars were always real tough to acquire. Unlike, say The Beatles, he didn't play stock guitars from the big guitar makers. That Hohner...when one would magically pop up on ebay, the price would shoot to the moon. Now after death, those prices are going to be more outrageous.

.

The original maker of The Cloud and Symbol guitar made them especially for Prince. You would have to pay him a fortune for a custom made one. A fortune.

.

Perhaps now that Prince has passed some company might put into production the Tele-copy, or The Cloud or Symbol guitars. Most artists have signature models. I can see those Prince guitars eventually getting a release. Will be expensive, though.

.

There are Cloud, Symbol copies out there. Copies. Not the real deal. Cheap knock offs made in Korea. Be like buying a Ferrari made by KIA. Do you really have a Ferrari?
