Did Prince ever have a bad show?

I'm not trying to bring any negativity here by asking this but does anyone know of any show that it Prince was off form in general? I have never heard of such a thing but thought I'd just ask fellow Org members.

By his standards I am sure he was super hard on himself (and his band) and would consider many of his shows to be substandard. By anyone else's standards...no, he never had a bad show...

Well, he was booed long time ago when he opened for the Stones, but I would say that he was able to overcome those Spooky Electric people and have a very decent career.

I never attended a bad regular show, but I did go to one aftershow performance that was terrible. It was 1997 at the 9:30 Club in DC... he basically mailed it in for 25 minutes and bailed. Only highlight was that he sang the lyrics to 18 & Over over Johnny... the rest was a total waste of time. It didn't help that his 1997 era NPG was sorely lacking in skill compared to the prior version.

At a show in Atlantic City at Trump Marina he hurt his leg and had to cancel shows after that--- also Chaka Khan took a huge spill falling on her backside....found out later the stage was slippery from sweating....refrigeration units were right below the stage -next floor down underneath......I was in the 5th row center at that show....I never noticed when he got hurt and didn't even know.....until after the show that he got hurt......the 1st four rows were comped casino folks just sitting there- my row and back everyone standing....also he started in on " The One" with Mayte all dressed in white then cut it saying " I'm not feeling that one tonight".....Mayte was not happy so I guess overall that's a bad show?

It was filmed also....don't know if it is out there.

That whole 1990 tour was shitty. Any bar band could have played better than they did. Probably why they dropped Dr. Fink.

There have been shows where he has had a cold/flu/whatever and probably not been up to par vocally. The '93 DNA lounge gig is a prime example of this. Edinburgh '93 was plagued with tech problems, and the number 34 bus could be seen driving past in the background every ten minutes.... I'm sure there are others.

Cologne, Germany 2011. I don't know what happened, but from the footage I've seen he wasn't feeling it at all.

That depends. Was Kirky J his drummer? Did he allow Tony M to use the mic?

If he didn't have bad shows, he sure tried ^ to have bad shows.

I remember attending a Nude Tour concert here in Rome: first AND last time Prince has ever played here. The venue was a small stadium with a capacity of 30,000 people, and it wasn't even half full.

Prince was sooo angry about it, you could see it in his eyes...people did not know the lyrics of half of the songs he played, many were boringly seated, and he struggled from beginning to end, trying to captivate at least the small crowd gathered in front of the stage.

I felt like he wanted to leave the stage at some point. He was sooo pissed off!

I wanted to leave, for sure. It did not feel right, everything felt strained, no fluidity at all. It was awful. He cancelled the other Italian dates after that one, and he was also sued for doing that, if I remember well.

*Gasp* You can't be serious! Nothing about that tour was boring. I wasn't around then to attend but from the footage I've seen, it was an amazing, electrifying tour

That's uninformed and misguided. Prince was still in control. He didn't drop Fink. Fink left. It had been a long stretch, and he was off to do other things with his life, career, and family. He had also suffered the loss of a child, like Prince & Mayte had.

.

The biggest issue with that time, for me, was the inclusion of rap. I don't hate rap, but Prince seemed pointed on trying to make it a thing in his music. He could have had anyone in there, but we all know the sad state that Tony M. brought to the thing. I hated the 3 guy dancers in general. (I didn't even like Wally, Greg, & Jerome.)

.

I also think Sonny was better on bass, and Miko leaving as quite welcomed by me. Levi's great on bass & guitar, but he fit better on the latter, and Sonny on bass. This earlier version of NPG was almost a perfunctory band, compared to the tigther and better version with Morris, Sonny, Tommy, & Michael.

I recently saw footage from Rotterdam or one of the Montreaux shows, where he comes out, playing "Controversy" forevah. He is constantly telling the sound guys to turn up the voice on stage, needs more guitar, etc. etc. They kind of just grooved on "Controversy" for a long while, until it was fixed.

That was not a bad show given by Prince - it was a bad show by those racist hate filled fans

I don't understand. You mean it was both a bad show given by Prince and the audience or it was a good show given by Prince, but the racist audience made it into a bad show?

Man I loved listening to the concerts where he's irritated with the sound people because it seems like it happened far too often. The best part is that he'll just keep singing but adding in what's wrong the whole time like: "Little Red Corvette...baby you're much too...I need more guitar...yes you are..." lol

Some shows were definitely better than others.

I wasn't too fond of the Nude Tour or the 3121 show I saw.

One of the nights of LA 21 wasn't as good as others.

But, it's all subjective.

I think that Live stream of the AOA/PLECTRUM release show was pretty bad. Lovesex is my jamm!
I also recall the start of one of his hit n run shows at the Palladium in LA in 2000 or 2001. The band sounded pretty weak until I saw the pleasure on his face at the fans reaction and he and the band stepped it up and played great the rest of the show. It was cool to see how the crowd supported him and he took it in and smiled and gave that energy right back. Something I had never seen before. It really made him human to me and seemed to bond the crowd and him together.

That was the first night of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in 2011. I remember that very well, it's true, the sound was bad and he kept shouting at the sound and light people to get it right. The first half of the show was one big soundcheck. Things got better later on, but yeah, this was a concert where things didn't go down well. Thankfully, he made up for it the next two nights.

I've never personally experienced any of Prince's shows that were just bad. Some were better than others. The one that I liked the least was what I called the medley tour (I forgot the official tour name). It was in 1998. The only reason that I didn't like it that much was that he never completed a song. It was pretty annoying.

'93 DNA Lounge show is a prime example off one of his best shows ever....at least among those circulating out there among fans, which includes hundreds.

I've seen Prince about 100 times. First time was in 1982 and last was January 2016. The ONLY time i was disappointed was this show in 2001 for the 2nd celebration. Something was just off that night. Course it could have been me who knows?

Yes it was the worst show ever. The Sound in the Lanxess arena was a desaster. Prince fucked it up completely, because he came in LATE for soundcheck and wanted to change everything the last minute, but that took too long. He got angry about the sound and left the show earlier. The press tore him into pieces the next day and he never played Germany afterwards again. Only Berlin but that was cancelled because of small ticket sales.
