319: why this number?

Since this song was released, I wondered what 319 means, or rather, if it means anything at all. Is it an American number, like the stoner 420, that we in Europe just don't know about? Or is it a number made famous by Prince, because of reasons? Does anyone know?

In the movie Showgirls one of the characters is in Room 319.

So it would seem he named the song after that.

However...it's possible the song came first then they added the reference into the movie.

Chicken or the egg?

It could be the hotel room number where he stayed or where someone he knew stayed while on tour or vacation, and then he just got the idea... or it really went down like that.

Could very well be. Inspiration hides in the smallest things.

It's this kinda crap that really annoys me. He didn't do that. He took the three from the nine, then added the one. 9-3+1 = 7. Anyone who knows Prince knows he was too spiritual and humble to ever let the number get to 10 before he started bringing it down.

Theory one - The song is a work of non-fiction. It literally happened and her hotel room was 319.

Theory two - He has written songs with numbers as titles... as of the mid 90's he'd reached 319.

Why would a room number in some movie mean that the song is about that?

The song was in the movie.... so was Ripopgodazippa...both played a critical part in the advancement of the plot!!! smile was great to see that movie in college for 2 reasons: 1) for, um, the art, and 2) for 0(+> songs that at the time were not released!

I don't know why he named it that, but I think of the song every time I check into a hotel room and get room 319, which seems to happen more oftent than it should by chance.

Maybe it just sounds better in the song than say, 357 or 888?

In an interview from 1986 he was asked about the number of unreleased songs. He answered: 320. I always linked 319 with that. smile

Backwards as hell, and you know it. LOL

.

Numberology always adds the numbers to get one digit. 3+1+9=13. 1+3=4.

.

But I do wonder about the movie vs. the song - which came first.

March 19 was when tGE was supposed to be released. It was delayed repeatedly by WB and finally released on 9/26/95.

Given that the song is from October 1993, 2 years before the movie release, I would assume the room in the movie was named after the song: even if the script had been completed at this stage it certainly wouldn't have named a room number, and I doubt Prince would have been contacted for the music at such an early stage either.

Strangely enough my mother died in hospital room 319 in 2001. I was pretty stunned by the coincidence eek

I've always wondered how he arrived at his age when asked on the LoveSymbol album:

I'm into my fifth soul now so that makes me.. 320 I think? I don't have access to that album at the moment.

So maybe this was an experience he had on his 319th birthday. Yes I know the TGE was after but perhaps he was just reminiscing.

Also Wasn't Gina Gershon possibly going to be in one of his movies. I can't remember if it was PR or UTCM. Gershon was in Showgirls. Maybe when they did her screen test they had a fling in room 319. Perhaps that was the room number of the screen test.

I don't know - I realize I'm reaching but I would rather speculate and make up scenarios about songs / lyrics than the mysteries around his passing.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.
