Nice call - Janet really owes her start to Prince and the Mpls Sound (Jam/Lewis)

I don't know about the album, but Lipps Inc.'s "Funkytown" is an undeniably huge MPLS funk track too early to be Prinfluencend.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Think again. Control doesn't sound like Prince at all. Hell, it was Prince who later covered "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" Control and Rhythm Nation was as new with sounds and production as anything Prince did up to 1984.

Rhythm Nation! I was living for that album back then. We even learned the choreography to the title song. I was wearing a key in my ear and everything. Anyways back to Prince: as far as funk I'd say anything with the Time is always amazing. I'm late but I never knew until recently how much of that band was Prince and his vision. Also the family just found out about them...wow. I'm gonna have to check out Madhouse I never heard of that. Is that another Prince side project? It's crazy that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis came out of that to become these amazing producers I wonder what they could do with some of Prince tracks from the vault?

And The Time was Vanity 6's backing band when they toured with Prince in 1983. Jam and Lewis production is amazing especially in the 80s. Check out their work https://en.wikipedia.org/...iscography

Disagree. Watch the music video for Control - might as well be Janet fronting the Time in First Avenune, singing Jungle Love or The Bird. Nothing wrong with that... the guys hooked her up and she made it her own.

It's so funny that I see this thread right now, I was online looking for Prince rareities and I saw this LP set - http://www.ebay.com/itm/P...Sw~oFXN5v2

It's a 4 LP set with a bunch of tracks that either pre-date the official MPLS Sound or that were part of that early time period.

^^ THAT's interesting, and kind of makes me want to hear what the Time would sound like doing some of those songs. Can't quite hear Morris doing Let's Wait A While though, LOL

Basically the signature of the MPLSound was the use of synthesisers instead of horns and electronic drums. So anything produced by:

Jamie Starr (ergo Prince)
Jam & Lewis
Andre Cymone
Jesse Johnson
Brownmark

between 1981 and 1990 (I would say that after that the "sound" started to change).

and what an amazing line up of albums that includes!
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

In terms of classic albums (ie. Encapsulating that sound) I would say...

1999 - Prince
Glamorous Life - Sheila E
Appolonia 6
Ice Cream Castles - The Time
Jesse Johnson Review - Jesse Johnson
Daydreaming - Morris Day
Hearsay - Alexander O'Neal
Control - Janet Jackson
AC - Andre Cymone

there are plenty others but I think if someone asked for a sample of albums that fully illustrates MPLSound in its heyday those are the ones.
